The lure of gold in the Lakota's Black Hills draws prospectors and many colorful characters, such as Al Swearengen, Calamity Jane, Colorado Charlie Utter, Seth Bullock, Madame Mustache, and Sol Star, and it also lures crime. After the shocking murder of an acquaintance, Jack Jones begins investigating an entire string of murders that begins with Wild Bill Hickok and leads Jack down a treacherous trail that has him wondering if he won't be next.

Book excerpt: Step Into the Shadows of Deadwood Deadwood—a town steeped in legend—holds its breath as Travis Pearson, reenactor of the infamous Wild Bill Hickok, finds himself ensnared in a historical riddle that blurs the lines between performance and reality, life and death. In the dim light of Saloon No. 10, amidst the applause for a well-recreated death, Travis feels a chilling resonance with his character that cannot be shaken. The echoes of the past, it seems, are not content to remain silent. As unexplained deaths begin to shadow Deadwood once more, whispers of a resurgent curse sweep through the haunted streets. Travis, caught in the heart of the mystery, is forced to confront the possibility that he might be playing a role far beyond the saloon's stage. The pressure mounts when the discovery of an ancient diary links modern tragedies to historical vendettas, suggesting that the violence of the past is leeching into the present. With each passing day, as the body count rises, Travis's dreams are invaded by the ghosts of Deadwood's storied inhabitants, blurring the lines between sleep and wakefulness, between history and horror. His friends, Ted and Charlie, stand by him, determined to help Travis unravel the mystery before the history he loves so dearly consumes him whole. But the closer they get to the truth, the more Travis begins to realize that the key to breaking the curse might require a sacrifice too personal to bear. In a town where every shadow whispers of betrayal and every gust of wind carries the scent of long-buried secrets, Travis must navigate the treacherous waters of legacy and legend. Will he emerge into the light, or will he become another echo in the haunting of Saloon No. 10? Step into the shadows of Deadwood, where the past is alive, and history's dead refuse to rest. The line between the past and present has never been so perilously thin. As Travis stands on the precipice of a discovery that could either liberate or destroy, Deadwood holds its breath, waiting to see whether salvation or damnation waits in the wings. Join Travis as he delves deep into the heart of a curse, where the stakes are life and death, and history itself hangs in the balance.

Book excerpt: Being known as the fastest gun in the west, and killing his fair share of men in the process, makes Wild Bill Hickok a constant target for his enemies seeking revenge. So, when he rides into the town of Deadwood Gulch in the Dakota Territory, he always has to keep an eye on his back. Like many people in the late 1800s, Bill has set out to make his fortune in the gold rush, and Deadwood is bustling with gold miners, saloons, and brothels. When Bill fails to stake a claim on the river for gold panning, he resorts to his first love in order to make some quick cash: poker. With his good friends Calamity Jane and Charlie Utter keeping him company, the former lawman finds himself winning at the tables, and keeping the saloons in business with his love of whiskey. Wild Bill is trying to save enough money to provide a good life for him and his wife for years to come, but his enemies have other ideas. The Dead Man’s Hand: A Moment in Time is the fascinating second book in Katheryn Shelly’s Past Life Journey series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive bibliographical reference will be the first stop for anyone looking for Calamity Jane in print, film, or photograph—and wanting to know how reliable those sources may be. Richard W. Etulain, renowned western-U.S. historian and the author of a recent biography of this charismatic figure, enumerates and assesses the most valuable sources on Calamity Jane’s life and legend in newspapers, magazines, journals, books, and movies, as well as historical and government archives. Etulain begins with a brief biography of Martha Canary, aka Calamity Jane (1856–1903), then analyzes the origins and growth of her legends. The sources, Etulain shows, reveal three versions of Calamity Jane. In the most popular one, she was a Wild Woman of the Old West who helped push a roaring frontier through its final stages. This is the Calamity Jane who fought Indians, marched with the military, and took on the bad guys. Early in her life she also hoped to embody the pioneer woman, seeking marriage and a stable family and home. A third, later version made of Calamity an angel of mercy who reached out to the poor and nursed smallpox victims no one else would help. The hyperbolic journalism of the Old West, as well as dime novels and the stretchers Calamity herself told in her interviews and autobiography, shaped her legends through much of the twentieth century. Many of the sensational early accounts of Calamity’s life, Etulain notes, were based on rumor and hearsay. In illuminating the role of the Deadwood Dick dime novel series and other pulp fiction in shaping what we know—or think we know—of the American West, Etulain underscores one of his fascinating themes: the power of popular culture. The product of twenty years’ labor sifting fact from falsehood or distortion, this bibliography and reader’s guide includes brief discussions of nearly every item’s contents, along with a terse, entertaining evaluation of its reliability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: $5,000 REWARD. Wanted Dead or Alive. Notorious Badman. SAM BASS, alias Sam Bushon, and Honest Eph. If sighted, immediately call the nearest U. S. Marshall's Office. After a month of moving BeeBop Publishing Group to Georgetown, Texas from Brenham, Texas, I took a ride south on IH-35 from Georgetown to Austin. I couldn't help but notice a large green and white highway sign that said Sam Bass Road. I became interested where this road went, exited, and followed it to a road sign for A. W. Grimes Boulevard. I'm not sure why, but I needed to find out who these people were just like I did when I wrote a story about the Runaway Scrape in Texas and discovered Three-Legged Willie's statue on the town square in Georgetown. As a legend, as is with all folklore, the account of Sam Bass' life is as varied as there are books written about him and his exploits in the late 1800s. Sam Bass and his gang held up two stagecoaches while in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1877. Sam had a fling with Calamity Jane and sat in the same chair Wild Bill Hickok sat before being shot in a poker game holding a Dead Man's Hand, Aces and Eights. Such a hand was said to have been held by Wild Bill Hickok, a lawman, and gunfighter and good friend of Sam Bass. In the fall of 1877, Sam Bass and his Horse Marines robbed the eastbound Union Pacific passenger train and came away with over $60,000 in twenty-dollar gold pieces. After a successful robbery, they split up into pairs and went in all directions. Some were caught. Bass was an excellent transformist and disguised himself as a poor farmer and made his way back to Denton County, Texas, with his share of the gold. In the springtime of 1878, Sam and his gang robbed four trains within twenty miles of Dallas. Word was sent to Governor Hubbard that something needed to be done. The bandits became the object of a spirited chase across North Texas by reward-seeking citizens and a specialized company of Texas Rangers headed by Junius Peak. Follow the life story of Sam Bass from his childhood days to his last days in Round Rock, Texas, on July 21, 1878. Even though this notorious outlaw spent less than a week in this small community, his short visit put the town on world atlases. He also had a major street named after him. It wasn't only a few years ago the community got together and named a boulevard after Deputy A. W. Grimes, the man Sam Bass was accused of killing in 1878. Unlike John Wesley Hardin, Bass had no notches on his gun handle and once joked about selling his revolver for money.

Book excerpt: A bushwhacker ranks just below a rattlesnake in the Gunsmith's eyes. And a bushwhacker who'd let a woman rot in jail for his crime doesn't deserve the ground it takes to bury him in. That's just the kind of low-down varmint Clint Adams finds when he rides into Deadwood. Now it's up to the Gunsmith to smoke him out, and to do it, he makes himself the prime target. It's a plan that has to work—or Clint won't live to tell the tale...

Book excerpt: Drawing on fact and folklore, dueling authors Bill Markley and Kellen Cutsforth present opposing viewpoints pertaining to controversies surrounding some of the most well-known characters and events in the history of the Old West. In an entertaining and conversational style, Markley and Cutsforth take conflicting sides to debunk and in some cases, proliferate the myths, legends, and realities of some of the West’s most famous figures, including: - Billy the Kid -Jesse James -Buffalo Bill Cody -Calamity Jane -the Earp brothers - and many more The real lives of the historic figures in Old West Showdown are shrouded in controversy and myth. Was Jesse James a Southern Son fighting for the cause of the fallen Confederacy, or a blood-thirsty cutthroat justly pursued by the authorities? Was Billy the Kid a misunderstood youth or a cold-blooded killer? Did Buffalo Bill Cody truly ride for the Pony Express as a young man? Or, was he just a blowhard who trumped up his own past in an attempt to seem more heroic in the eyes of audiences attending his Wild West shows? These questions and many more will be explored in this exciting book.

That was what a slick Denver lawyer-representing a mysterious client-offered to pay the legendary manhunter Luke Starbuck. The job: to find a way into Wyoming's infamous Hole-in-the-Wall outlaw stronghold and shoot a bad man dead. Starbuck knew there was something wrong with the deal. And by the time he reached the foothills of the Big Horns he had a good idea what it was: he'd been set up to be killed. ANY MOMENT COULD BE YOUR LAST... Now, making his way among lawmen, gunmen, and free spirits riding on both sides of the law, Starbuck is traveling to Salt Lake City and all the way back to Denver to find the mystery man who wants him dead. But with key players dying every step of the way, Starbuck must find his answers within his own violent past-and in a Badlands town called Deadwood, where secrets are sealed in blood.
