In the fall of 1877, Sam Bass and his friends robbed the eastbound Union Pacific passenger train and came away with over $60,000 in twenty-dollar gold pieces. After a successful robbery, they split up into pairs and went in all directions. Some were caught. Bass was an excellent transformist and disguised himself as a poor farmer and made his way back to Denton County, Texas with his share of the gold. In the springtime of 1878, Sam and his gang robbed four trains within twenty miles of Dallas. Word was sent to Governor Hubbard that something needed to be done. The bandits became the object of a spirited chase across North Texas by reward-seeking citizens and a special company of Texas Rangers headed by Junius Peak. Follow the life story of Sam Bass from his childhood days to his last days in Round Rock, Texas on July 21, 1878. Even though this notorious outlaw spent less than a week in this small community, his short visit put the town on world atlases and had a major street named after him. When I put down my baton, after thirty-nine years of conducting bands and orchestras, I needed a project. I decided to share my early years growing up in the town of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, by writing an autobiography. As I collected the material for this venture, I came to two conclusions: first, I didn’t have enough interesting material, and second, who would want to read it? Some of those memories combined with later writings were the basis for the first part of this book, “Essays and Reflections.” The “Music and Correspondence” sections speak for themselves. The greeting cards are but a few I have written to my wife, Jean, over our fifty-seven years of marriage. They were my reaction to the commercial bland verse and high-priced cards. Growing up in a funeral home, I had seen enough flowers to last several lifetimes. I very seldom gave my wife flowers. As for the poetry, it came about by accident. It started with writing song lyrics and just seemed to segue into the poems. I never really looked for a poem subject; every day events presented themselves with constant frequency. The individual limericks added a personal touch to my correspondence and were greatly appreciated by the receiver. Many of the later poems could not have been written at an earlier age. Again, experience is a writing necessity. I do hope you enjoy my writings, my humor, and my comments on life. I am surprised I have made this venture into writing a book at age eighty-six, but as I remarked at the end of my final concert, “Tonight, I end my conducting career.” I broke my baton here. “Old conductors never die, they’re always beating time. Good-bye.”

He believes his son, Rusty Thornton, is lost without God and takes him to a faraway place in the early 1950's near Spicewood, Texas where he would never come in contact with people. He has an ancient version of the King James Version of the Bible and begins to try and cure his son's affliction of skepticism. The mystery of why he has such cynicism is possible because he remembers nothing before his eighteenth birthday. The first book he read after learning to read and write was on Hinduism. What was this strange ability he had with being able to communicate with animals, one of God's creations? Why can't he remember anything in his life before his eighteenth birthday? Who is his cousin, Carolyn Thornton who comes strangely into his life on his twenty-first birthday? Who is the stranger, Billy Joe Briscoe who is hired to become Rusty's companion and teach him about Jesus Christ and the Bible? Let's try to answer the question "Is it wrong for Christians to Question God?" I won't give you the spoiler in the novel, but you will find a very unusual mystery of young Rusty Thornton, one that is not answered until the end of the story, as to why he questioned God's words in the Bible. The first half of the book refers to the Old Testament. The last half refers to the New Testament. My personal feeling as an author writing this book found three questions one should never ask. One should not ask a question of the Lord because they think they know better than Him. One should never question God's authority, a big No, No! We should never ask questions of God to try and stall our obedience to the Lord. But, if we are questioning the scriptures in the Bible because we desperately want to know the answer because we are searching out and really want to know our Lord because we want to see the light in so much confusion, then that should be okay. In the mind and thoughts of Rusty Thornton, it is perfectly fine to do so!
