Book excerpt: Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm hosts the largest and most well documented collection of Cypriot antiquities in the world outside Cyprus. The museum's goal is to continuously stay in-tune with the latest research centered on its collection. The suggested conference, mostly focused on the Cypriote Bronze and Iron-Age, is part of this long-term strategy to systemize an exchange of knowledge between the museum and external Swedish and international partners. Another important component in the long term strategy is to particularly focus on young and promising Swedish and international scholars so that the research on the Cypriote collections at Medelhavsmuseet remains vital and dynamic also in the future.
Book Synopsis A Study of the Circulation of Ceramics in Cyprus from the 3rd Century BC to the 3rd Century AD by : John Lund
Download or read book A Study of the Circulation of Ceramics in Cyprus from the 3rd Century BC to the 3rd Century AD written by John Lund and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph devoted solely to the ceramics of Cyprus in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. The island was by then no longer divided into kingdoms but unified politically, first under Ptolemaic Egypt and later as a province in the Roman Empire. Submission to foreign rule was previously thought to have diluted - if not obliterated - the time-honoured distinctive Cypriot character. The ceramic evidence suggests otherwise. The distribution of local and imported pottery in Cyprus points to the existence of several regional exchange networks, a division that also seems reflected by other evidence. The similarities in material culture, exchange patterns and preferential practices are suggestive of a certain level of regional collective self-awareness. From the 1st century BC onwards, Cyprus became increasingly engulfed by mass produced and standardized ceramic fine wares, which seem ultimately to have put many of the indigenous makers of similar products out of business - or forced them to modify their output. Also, the ceramic record gradually became less diverse during the Roman Period than before - developments which we today might be inclined to view as symptoms of an early form of globalisation.
Book Synopsis The Development of Pre-State Communities in the Ancient Near East by : Diane Bolger
Download or read book The Development of Pre-State Communities in the Ancient Near East written by Diane Bolger and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics of small-scale societies in the ancient Near East by examining the ways in which particular communities functioned and interacted and by moving beyond the broad neo-evolutionary models of social change which have characterised many earlier approaches. By focusing on issues of diversity, scale, and context, it considers the ways in which economy, crafts, technology, and ritual were organised; the roles played by mortuary practices and households in the structure and development of ancient societies; and the importance of agency, identity, ethnicity, gender, community and cultural interaction for the rise of socio-economic complexity. The contributors to this volume are well-known archaeologists in the field of Near Eastern studies; all are currently engaged in fieldwork or research in Cyprus, the Levant, or Turkey. The variety and depth of the research they present here reflect the richness of the archaeological record in the 'cradle of civilisation' and convey the vibrancy of current interpretive approaches within the field of Near Eastern prehistory today.

The rich iconography on many of these common, everyday objects provides a rare look into daily life on Cyprus in antiquity and highlights the island’s participation in Roman artistic and cultural production. Each lamp is illustrated, and the accompanying text addresses typology, decoration, and makers’ marks on each of these objects that provide new insights into art, craft, and trade in the ancient Mediterranean.

Book Synopsis Contested Antiquity by : Esther Solomon
Download or read book Contested Antiquity written by Esther Solomon and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the archaeological legacies of Greece and Cyprus are often considered to represent some of the highest values of Western civilization—democracy, progress, aesthetic harmony, and rationalism—this much adored and heavily touristed heritage can quickly become the stage for clashes over identity and memory. In Contested Antiquity, Esther Solomon curates explorations of how those who safeguard cultural heritage are confronted with the best ways to represent this heritage responsibly. How should visitors be introduced to an ancient Byzantine fortification that still holds the grim reminders of the cruel prison it was used as until the 1980s? How can foreign archaeological institutes engage with another nation's heritage in a meaningful way? What role do locals have in determining what is sacred, and can this sense of the sacred extend beyond buildings to the surrounding land? Together, the essays featured in Contested Antiquity offer fresh insights into the ways ancient heritage is negotiated for modern times.
