Book excerpt: Dave Knight, a young Christian minister accepts the assignment to pastor his first church unaware of how deeply the former minister indoctrinated the church with false beliefs. Hired by Reverend Wiseman Dave's assignment is to discover what has caused the church to lose members and to return it to a viable church Upon arriving at Midpoint Dave is stranded at the airport due to a sudden illness hospitalizing Reverend Wiseman. As Dave decides to locate a taxi he blindly collides with a young woman: His college sweetheart Shirley Adam. Dave learns she is still unmarried, working as a private duty nurse and that she never received any of the letters he wrote her while he was in seminary. Shirley offers Dave a ride to the church. Touring the parsonage together Shirley's vivacious spirit becomes depressive, Dave discovers a terrible wrong was rendered by the former minister which hurt Shirley so deeply she is reluctant to return to church. As Dave begins his ministry he learns there have been many members of the church who were hurt by the former minister. Determined to right these wrongs, Dave begins to rebuild the church, with his efforts constantly challenged by three of the church's officers. In Dave's attempt to bring the church back to the Lord, he finds no time to court Shirley and risks losing the only woman he loves. As his work hours increases he ignores his body's signals of the on-start of a serious illness. Will Dave loose Shirley, his health and the church? The closing chapters hold the answers to this inspiring story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A scared playwright won't write a good play. We're going to have to try to find a bit more steel.' – Telegraph Ryan Craig is not afraid of controversial topics. Described as a 'playwright with the ability to become one of the best of his generation' (British Theatre Guide), his work to date is known to probe both social norms and ethical issues. Since being nominated for the Evening Standard's Most Promising Playwright Award in 2005 his plays have been produced at venues of all sizes from London's National Theatre and the Hampstead to Theatre Royal Bath and the Menier Chocolate Factory. In this first collection of his works, Craig brings together four plays that go 'against the tide', offering an insight into the power of contemporary drama that doesn't shy away from the most contentious and hot-button debates of the age. Complete with a new introduction by the author, it begins with his hit National Theatre play The Holy Rosenbergs and includes his piece, Charlotte and Theodore which premiered in 2023, published here for the first time. The Holy Rosenbergs (2011): 'buzzes with discussion and debate ... In the clarity of its construction, the tension of its climax and the slow unveiling of its emotional core, this is a very fine play indeed' (Aleks Sierz, Arts Desk) Filthy Business (2017): 'A superbly modern Mother Courage...If plays survive by creating meaty roles for actors, Ryan Craig's new work is destined for a long life' (Michael Billington, Guardian) What We Did to Weinstein (2005): 'There is no more compelling or politically significant drama in town than Ryan Craig's What We Did to Weinstein....fascinates because it reflects the complex passions of Jews in more than two minds about what Jewishness entails' (Nicholas de Jongh, Evening Standard) Charlotte and Theodore (2023): 'cancel-culture drama that bravely captures the acrimonious mood of today' (Dominic Cavendish, Telegraph)

Book excerpt: “Craig wields powerful and vivid prose to illuminate a country and a family trapped not only by war and revolution, but also by desire and loss.” —Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Miss Burma tells the story of modern-day Burma through the eyes of Benny and Khin, husband and wife, and their daughter Louisa. After attending school in Calcutta, Benny settles in Rangoon, then part of the British Empire, and falls in love with Khin, a woman who is part of a long-persecuted ethnic minority group, the Karen. World War II comes to Southeast Asia, and Benny and Khin must go into hiding in the eastern part of the country during the Japanese occupation, beginning a journey that will lead them to change the country’s history. Years later, Benny and Khin’s eldest child, Louisa, has a danger-filled, tempestuous childhood and reaches prominence as Burma’s first beauty queen soon before the country falls to dictatorship. As Louisa navigates her newfound fame, she is forced to reckon with her family’s past, the West’s ongoing covert dealings in her country, and her own loyalty to the cause of the Karen people. Based on the story of the author’s mother and grandparents, Miss Burma is a captivating portrait of how modern Burma came to be and of the ordinary people swept up in the struggle for self-determination and freedom. “At once beautiful and heartbreaking . . . An incredible family saga.” —Refinery29 “Miss Burma charts both a political history and a deeply personal one—and of those incendiary moments when private and public motivations overlap.” —Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: "Jake's Preacher Gig" is a two-part story that focuses on characters from three separate families, tracking the daily life of the principle character, Reverend Jake Millsaps. The story takes place at picturesque but fictitious Hyacinth College in Plant City, in East Tennessee. The time period is the 1989-1990 school year. One of Jake's primary duties is to develop a drug intervention program to combat the college's flagging enrollment. The point of view of this tale is unique: we see all action though the eyes of a group of stumbling demons. Our demons do not dispense curses, nor do they commit any physical mayhem. They exist only in the spiritual dimension and use their powers of suggestion to try to influence events in Jake's day-to-day life. Their purpose is to encourage chaos to undermine Jake's effectiveness as campus pastor.
