Book excerpt: This book sheds light on 'contact moments' between Japanese male-queer culture and that of the West in the postwar period, and critiques various contemporary examples of persistent Orientalism and nativism. Focusing on a range of Japanese as well as English male-queer materials including magazines, memoirs and cybertexts, Suganuma shows how the interactions of the two cultures affected the subject formation process of queer selves. The instances examined range from the hentai magazines of the 1950s and their depiction of men who had sex with foreign men (mostly American servicemen); the depiction of race in the magazine Barazoku; John Whittier Treat's memoir of his sabbatical in Japan and his depiction of his own Orientalism; the writings and strategies of OCCUR and Fushimi in the 1990s; and the GJN news site. The author sees the depiction of and reaction to Japanese men who had sex with foreigners in the hentai magazines as part of a larger pattern of representation manifesting gender anxieties among Japanese men (both heterosexual and homosexual) who found themselves feminized by defeat in the war. He draws on Dyer's understanding of whiteness as a flexible default position in his discussion of Barazoku, but argues that in this case Japaneseness is the default position and whiteness is othered. In his final chapter, he argues for an understanding of the activities of GJN also as a space of mediation rather than simply as a wholesale importation of American or 'global gay' culture. Suganuma argues that the binaries of cross-cultural comparison (local/global, Japan/West, acts/identities, and us/them) can be generative and productive as well as repressive and reductive.

During the course of treatment, a patient's projections and the analyst's struggle to divert them can stress, distort, or contaminate the therapeutic relationship. It may lead to various forms of enactment, in which the therapist unconsciously colludes with the client in interpretation and treatment, or it can lead to projective identification, in which the client imposes negative feelings and behaviors onto the therapist, further interfering with analysis and intervention. Drawing on decades of clinical case experience, Robert Waska leads practitioners through the steps of phantasy and transference mechanisms and their ability to increase, oppose, embrace, or neutralize analytic contact. Operating from a psychoanalytic perspective, he explains how to cope professionally with moments of transference and maintain an objective interpretive stance within the ongoing matrix of projective identification, countertransference, and enactment. To survey some of these ramifications and the research which derives from them, the AMS sponsored the Short Course Moments in Mathematics at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, held in San Antonio, Texas, in January 1987. This volume contains the six lectures presented during that course. The papers are likely to find a wide audience, for they are expository, but nevertheless lead the reader to topics of current research. In his paper, Henry J. Landau sketches the main ideas of past work related to the moment problem by such mathematicians as Caratheodory, Herglotz, Schur, Riesz, and Krein and describes the way the moment problem has interconnected so many diverse areas of research. J. H. B. Kemperman examines the moment problem from a geometric viewpoint which involves a certain natural duality method and leads to interesting applications in linear programming, measure theory, and dilations. Donald Sarason first provides a brief review of the theory of unbounded self-adjoint operators then goes on to sketch the operator-theoretic treatment of the Hamburger problem and to discuss Hankel operators, the Adamjan-Arov-Krein approach, and the theory of unitary dilations. Exploring the interplay of trigonometric moment problems and signal processing, Thomas Kailath describes the role of Szego polynomials in linear predictive coding methods, parallel implementation, one-dimensional inverse scattering problems, and the Toeplitz moment matrices. Christian Berg contrasts the multi-dimensional moment problem with the one-dimensional theory and shows how the theory of the moment problem may be viewed as part of harmonic analysis on semigroups. Starting from a historical survey of the use of moments in probability and statistics, Persi Diaconis illustrates the continuing vitality of these methods in a variety of recent novel problems drawn from such areas as Wiener-Ito integrals, random graphs and matrices, Gibbs ensembles, cumulants and self-similar processes, projections of high-dimensional data, and empirical estimation.
