Book excerpt: Primate Conservation provides a comprehensive discussion of the conservation of many species of nonhuman primates. The problems of conservation are discussed by distinguished scientists who are experts in their knowledge of the animals they write about and who have firsthand knowledge of the problems of conserving them. Animals ranging from Galago to the Gorilla have been selected to serve as examples of the types of problems that conservationists face. The book begins by discussing the ecology of two species of galagine in South Africa. It covers factors such as their distribution, habitat, population densities, activity patterns, feeding, group structure, and reproduction. This is followed by separate chapters on the conservation of the following: aye-aye; the lion tamarins of Brazil; the Peruvian yellow-tailed woolly monkey; the toque macaque of Sri Lanka; rare lion-tailed monkey of South India; rhesus monkeys in Northern India; the gelada baboons; the hanuman langur and douc langur; red ouakaris; black colobus monkeys; lesser apes; and eastern gorillas.

Book excerpt: In 1993, Tilo Nadler, an ageing German welder turned air-conditioning engineer, photographer, filmmaker and self-made biologist arrived in Vietnam for training foresters in Cuc Phuong National Park to secure the Park from poachers, hunters and vandals. Within two months, he is tasked with the care of two confiscated sub adult male Delacour’s langurs, a rare, endemic and critically endangered primate species. This book narrates Tilo’s story to start-up a world class rehabilitation centre for endangered primates against all odds in Vietnam. This book celebrates two possibilities. First, endangered primates are given a new lease of life at Endangered Primates Rescue Centre (EPRC) after their rescue from sordid conditions and joined-up with other survivors in captivity before their final release into appropriate habitat to establish troops. Second, the raising of troops or foot soldiers groomed by Tilo in the art and science of primate rehabilitation. Tilo’s abiding passion is to make both his troops gain a foothold in Vietnam.

Book excerpt: This conference represents the first time in my life when I felt it was a misfor tune, rather than a major cause of my happiness, that I do conservation work in New Guinea. Yes, it is true that New Guinea is a fascinating microcosm, it has fascinating birds and people, and it has large expanses of undisturbed rainforest. In the course of my work there, helping the Indonesian government and World Wildlife Fund set up a comprehensive national park system, I have been able to study animals in areas without any human population. But New Guinea has one serious drawback: it has no primates, except for humans. Thus, I come to this conference on primate conservation as an underprivileged and emotionally deprived observer, rather than as an involved participant. Nevertheless, it is easy for anyone to become interested in primate conserva tion. The public cares about primates. More specifically, to state things more realistically, many people care some of the time about some primates. Primates are rivaled only by birds, pandas, and the big cats in their public appeal. For some other groups of animals, the best we can say is that few people care about them, infrequently. For most groups of animals, no one cares about them, ever.

Book excerpt: "Wonders of the Annamites" takes readers on a journey through one of the wildest and most biodiverse parts of the world¿a range of rugged mountains bordering Laos and Vietnam known as the Annamites. Relatively unexplored until recent decades, the Annamites are now a hotspot for wildlife discoveries new to science. This is the first children's book to focus exclusively on the animal wonders of this little known region. The story follows a local father, daughter and son on a trek to visit their grandmother in this ancient, almost mystical, mountain landscape. Join them as they journey along rivers and through bamboo, up rocky cliffs and down into steamy tropical forests¿and discover a wondrous world of wildlife along the way. Learn about the rare and recently discovered animal species restricted to the Annamites such as the Saola, White-Cheeked Gibbon, Crested Argus, Red-Shanked Douc and other incredible iconic species of Southeast Asia.
