Book Synopsis Conformal Invariance and Critical Phenomena by : Malte Henkel
Download or read book Conformal Invariance and Critical Phenomena written by Malte Henkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical phenomena arise in a wide variety of physical systems. Classi cal examples are the liquid-vapour critical point or the paramagnetic ferromagnetic transition. Further examples include multicomponent fluids and alloys, superfluids, superconductors, polymers and fully developed tur bulence and may even extend to the quark-gluon plasma and the early uni verse as a whole. Early theoretical investigators tried to reduce the problem to a very small number of degrees of freedom, such as the van der Waals equation and mean field approximations, culminating in Landau's general theory of critical phenomena. Nowadays, it is understood that the common ground for all these phenomena lies in the presence of strong fluctuations of infinitely many coupled variables. This was made explicit first through the exact solution of the two-dimensional Ising model by Onsager. Systematic subsequent developments have been leading to the scaling theories of critical phenomena and the renormalization group which allow a precise description of the close neighborhood of the critical point, often in good agreement with experiments. In contrast to the general understanding a century ago, the presence of fluctuations on all length scales at a critical point is emphasized today. This can be briefly summarized by saying that at a critical point a system is scale invariant. In addition, conformal invaTiance permits also a non-uniform, local rescal ing, provided only that angles remain unchanged.
Book Synopsis Conformal Invariance: an Introduction to Loops, Interfaces and Stochastic Loewner Evolution by : Malte Henkel
Download or read book Conformal Invariance: an Introduction to Loops, Interfaces and Stochastic Loewner Evolution written by Malte Henkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conformal invariance has been a spectacularly successful tool in advancing our understanding of the two-dimensional phase transitions found in classical systems at equilibrium. This volume sharpens our picture of the applications of conformal invariance, introducing non-local observables such as loops and interfaces before explaining how they arise in specific physical contexts. It then shows how to use conformal invariance to determine their properties. Moving on to cover key conceptual developments in conformal invariance, the book devotes much of its space to stochastic Loewner evolution (SLE), detailing SLE’s conceptual foundations as well as extensive numerical tests. The chapters then elucidate SLE’s use in geometric phase transitions such as percolation or polymer systems, paying particular attention to surface effects. As clear and accessible as it is authoritative, this publication is as suitable for non-specialist readers and graduate students alike.

Book Synopsis Conformal Field Theory by : Sergei V Ketov
Download or read book Conformal Field Theory written by Sergei V Ketov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-02-28 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conformal field theory is an elegant and powerful theory in the field of high energy physics and statistics. In fact, it can be said to be one of the greatest achievements in the development of this field. Presented in two dimensions, this book is designed for students who already have a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, field theory and general relativity. The main idea used throughout the book is that conformal symmetry causes both classical and quantum integrability. Instead of concentrating on the numerous applications of the theory, the author puts forward a discussion of the general methods of conformal field theory as a physical theory. Hence the book provides in a self-contained way the necessary knowledge and “conformal” intuition which underline the various applications of conformal field theory. It is aimed to assist students and professionals in the study of the theory from its first principles and in applying the methods in their own research. The first of its kind, this book promises to give a detailed and comprehensive insight into the workings of conformal field theory.

Book Synopsis Probability and Statistical Physics in Two and More Dimensions by : Clay Mathematics Institute. Summer School
Download or read book Probability and Statistical Physics in Two and More Dimensions written by Clay Mathematics Institute. Summer School and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of lecture notes for six of the ten courses given in Buzios, Brazil by prominent probabilists at the 2010 Clay Mathematics Institute Summer School, ``Probability and Statistical Physics in Two and More Dimensions'' and at the XIV Brazilian School of Probability. In the past ten to fifteen years, various areas of probability theory related to statistical physics, disordered systems and combinatorics have undergone intensive development. A number of these developments deal with two-dimensional random structures at their critical points, and provide new tools and ways of coping with at least some of the limitations of Conformal Field Theory that had been so successfully developed in the theoretical physics community to understand phase transitions of two-dimensional systems. Included in this selection are detailed accounts of all three foundational courses presented at the Clay school--Schramm-Loewner Evolution and other Conformally Invariant Objects, Noise Sensitivity and Percolation, Scaling Limits of Random Trees and Planar Maps--together with contributions on Fractal and Multifractal properties of SLE and Conformal Invariance of Lattice Models. Finally, the volume concludes with extended articles based on the courses on Random Polymers and Self-Avoiding Walks given at the Brazilian School of Probability during the final week of the school. Together, these notes provide a panoramic, state-of-the-art view of probability theory areas related to statistical physics, disordered systems and combinatorics. Like the lectures themselves, they are oriented towards advanced students and postdocs, but experts should also find much of interest.
Download or read book W-symmetry written by P. Bouwknegt and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W-symmetry is an extension of conformal symmetry in two dimensions. Since its introduction in 1985, W-symmetry has become one of the central notions in the study of two-dimensional conformal field theory. The mathematical structures that underlie W-symmetry are so-called W-algebras, which are higher-spin extensions of the Virasoro algebra. This book contains a collection of papers on W-symmetry, covering the period from 1985 through 1993. Its main focus is the construction of W-algebras and their representation theory. A recurrent theme is the intimate connection between W-algebras and affine Lie algebras. Some of the applications, in particular W-gravity, are also covered. The significance of this reprint volume is that there are no textbooks entirely devoted to the subject.

Book Synopsis Statistical Mechanics Made Simple by : Daniel C Mattis
Download or read book Statistical Mechanics Made Simple written by Daniel C Mattis and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-04-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an elaboration of the author's lecture notes in a graduate course in statistical physics and thermodynamics, augmented by some material suitable for self-teaching as well as for undergraduate study. The first 4 or 5 chapters are suitable for an undergraduate course for engineers and physicists in Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics and include detailed study of the various ensembles and their connections to applied thermodynamics. The Debye law of specific heats and reasons for deviations from the Debye formulas are covered, as are the Einstein theories of Brownian motion, black-body radiation and specific heat of solids. Van der Waals gases and the reason for the apparent failure of his Law of Corresponding States are discussed. The last 5 chapters treat topics of recent interest to researchers, including: the Ising and Potts models, spin waves in ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic media, sound propagation in non-ideal gases and the decay of sound waves, introduction to the understanding of glasses and spin glasses, superfluidity and superconductivity. The selection of material is wide-ranging and the mathematics for handling it completely self-contained, ranging from counting (probability theory) to quantum field theory as used in the study of fermions, bosons and as an adjunct in the solutions of the equations of classical diffusion-reaction theory. In addition to the standard material found in most recent books on statistical physics the constellation of topics covered in this text includes numerous original items: • Generalization of “negative temperature” to interacting spins • Derivation of Gibbs' factor from first principles • Exact free energy of interacting particles in 1D (e.g., classical and quantum Tonk's gas) • Introduction to virial expansions, Equations of State, Correlation Functions and “critical exponents” • Superfluidity in ideal and non-ideal fluids (both Bogolubov and Feynman theories) • Superconductivity: thermodynamical approach and the BCS theory • Derivation of “Central Limit Theorem” and its applications • Boltzmann's “H-Theorem” and the nonlinear Boltzmann equation • Exact solution of nonlinear Boltzmann Equation for electrons in time-dependent electric field and the derivation of Joule heating, transport parameters in crossed electric and magnetic fields, etc. • Frequency spectrum and decay of sound waves in gases • Exact evaluation of free energy and thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional Ising model in regular and fully frustrated (spin-glass like) lattices • The “zipper” model of crystal fracture or polymer coagulation — calculation of Tc • Potts model in 2D: duality and Tc • “Doi's theory” of diffusion-limited chemical reactions with some exact results — including the evaluation of statistical fluctuations in radioactive decay • Thermodynamic Green Functions and their applications to fermions and bosons with an example drawn from random matrix theory and much more.
Download or read book Finite-Size Scaling written by J. Cardy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years, finite-size scaling has become an increasingly important tool in studies of critical systems. This is partly due to an increased understanding of finite-size effects by analytical means, and partly due to our ability to treat larger systems with large computers. The aim of this volume was to collect those papers which have been important for this progress and which illustrate novel applications of the method. The emphasis has been placed on relatively recent developments, including the use of the &egr;-expansion and of conformal methods.
