Download or read book A Mathematical Introduction to Conformal Field Theory written by Martin Schottenloher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part I gives a detailed, self-contained and mathematically rigorous exposition of classical conformal symmetry in n dimensions and its quantization in two dimensions. The conformal groups are determined and the appearence of the Virasoro algebra in the context of the quantization of two-dimensional conformal symmetry is explained via the classification of central extensions of Lie algebras and groups. Part II surveys more advanced topics of conformal field theory such as the representation theory of the Virasoro algebra, conformal symmetry within string theory, an axiomatic approach to Euclidean conformally covariant quantum field theory and a mathematical interpretation of the Verlinde formula in the context of moduli spaces of holomorphic vector bundles on a Riemann surface.

Book Synopsis Conformal Field Theory and Topology by : Toshitake Kohno
Download or read book Conformal Field Theory and Topology written by Toshitake Kohno and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry and physics have been developed with a strong influence on each other. One of the most remarkable interactions between geometry and physics since 1980 has been an application of quantum field theory to topology and differential geometry. This book focuses on a relationship between two-dimensional quantum field theory and three-dimensional topology which has been studied intensively since the discovery of the Jones polynomial in the middle of the 1980s and Witten's invariantfor 3-manifolds derived from Chern-Simons gauge theory. An essential difficulty in quantum field theory comes from infinite-dimensional freedom of a system. Techniques dealing with such infinite-dimensional objects developed in the framework of quantum field theory have been influential in geometryas well. This book gives an accessible treatment for a rigorous construction of topological invariants originally defined as partition functions of fields on manifolds. The book is organized as follows: The Introduction starts from classical mechanics and explains basic background materials in quantum field theory and geometry. Chapter 1 presents conformal field theory based on the geometry of loop groups. Chapter 2 deals with the holonomy of conformal field theory. Chapter 3 treatsChern-Simons perturbation theory. The final chapter discusses topological invariants for 3-manifolds derived from Chern-Simons perturbation theory.
Book Synopsis EPFL Lectures on Conformal Field Theory in D ≥ 3 Dimensions by : Slava Rychkov
Download or read book EPFL Lectures on Conformal Field Theory in D ≥ 3 Dimensions written by Slava Rychkov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primer develops Conformal Field Theory (CFT) from scratch, whereby CFT is viewed as any conformally-invariant theory that describes a fixed point of a renormalization group flow in quantum field theory. The book is divided into four lectures: Lecture 1 addresses the physical foundations of conformal invariance, while Lecture 2 examines the constraints imposed by conformal symmetry on the correlation functions of local operators, presented using the so-called projective null cone – a procedure also known as the embedding formalism. In turn, Lecture 3 focuses on the radial quantization and the operator product expansion, while Lecture 4 offers a very brief introduction to the conformal bootstrap. Derived from course-based notes, these lectures are intended as a first point of entry to this topic for Master and PhD students alike.

The final section discusses the more specialised applications, including QCD, quark-gluon plasma and condensed matter. This book is self-contained and learner-focused, featuring numerous exercises and examples. It is essential reading for both students and researchers across the fields of particle, nuclear and condensed matter physics.
Book Synopsis Conformal Field Theory with Gauge Symmetry by : Kenji Ueno
Download or read book Conformal Field Theory with Gauge Symmetry written by Kenji Ueno and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic approach to conformal field theory with gauge symmetry from the point of view of complex algebraic geometry. After presenting the basic facts of the theory of compact Riemann surfaces and the representation theory of affine Lie algebras in Chapters 1 and 2, conformal blocks for pointed Riemann surfaces with coordinates are constructed in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 the sheaf of conformal blocks associated to a family of pointed Riemann surfaces withcoordinates is constructed, and in Chapter 5 it is shown that this sheaf supports a projective flat connection-one of the most important facts of conformal field theory. Chapter 6 is devoted to the study of the detailed structure of the conformal field theory over $\mathbb{P}1$.Recently it was shown that modular functors can be constructed from conformal field theory, giving an interesting relationship between algebraic geometry and topological quantum field theory. This book provides a timely introduction to an intensively studied topic of conformal field theory with gauge symmetry by a leading algebraic geometer, and includes all the necessary techniques and results that are used to construct the modular functor.

Topics covered include basic concepts in conformal field theory with and without boundaries, the mathematical description of strings and D-branes, and the geometry of strongly curved spacetime. The book offers insights into string geometry that go beyond classical notions. Describing the theory from basic concepts, and providing numerous worked examples from conformal field theory and string theory, this reference is of interest to graduate students and researchers in physics and mathematics.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Conformal Invariance and Its Applications to Critical Phenomena by : Philippe Christe
Download or read book Introduction to Conformal Invariance and Its Applications to Critical Phenomena written by Philippe Christe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-04-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of critical phenomena goes back to the year 1869 when Andrews discovered the critical point of carbon dioxide, located at about 31°C and 73 atmospheres pressure. In the neighborhood ofthis point the carbon dioxide was observed to become opalescent, that is, light is strongly scattered. This is nowadays interpreted as comingfrom the strong fluctuations of the system close to the critical point. Subsequently, a wide varietyofphysicalsystems were realized to display critical points as well. Ofparticular importance was the observation of a critical point in ferromagnetic iron by Curie. Further examples include multicomponent fluids and alloys, superfluids, superconductors, polymers and may even extend to the quark-gluon plasmaand the early universe as a whole. Early theoretical investigationstried to reduce the problem to a very small number of degrees of freedom, such as the van der Waals equation and mean field approximations and culminating in Landau's general theory of critical phenomena. In a dramatic development, Onsager's exact solutionofthe two-dimensional Ising model made clear the important role of the critical fluctuations. Their role was taken into account in the subsequent developments leading to the scaling theories of critical phenomena and the renormalization group. These developements have achieved a precise description of the close neighborhood of the critical point and results are often in good agreement with experiments. In contrast to the general understanding a century ago, the presence of fluctuations on all length scales at a critical point is today emphasized.
Book Synopsis Conformal Field Theory by : Sergei V Ketov
Download or read book Conformal Field Theory written by Sergei V Ketov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-02-28 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conformal field theory is an elegant and powerful theory in the field of high energy physics and statistics. In fact, it can be said to be one of the greatest achievements in the development of this field. Presented in two dimensions, this book is designed for students who already have a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, field theory and general relativity. The main idea used throughout the book is that conformal symmetry causes both classical and quantum integrability. Instead of concentrating on the numerous applications of the theory, the author puts forward a discussion of the general methods of conformal field theory as a physical theory. Hence the book provides in a self-contained way the necessary knowledge and “conformal” intuition which underline the various applications of conformal field theory. It is aimed to assist students and professionals in the study of the theory from its first principles and in applying the methods in their own research. The first of its kind, this book promises to give a detailed and comprehensive insight into the workings of conformal field theory.
Book Synopsis Statistical Approach to Quantum Field Theory by : Andreas Wipf
Download or read book Statistical Approach to Quantum Field Theory written by Andreas Wipf and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new expanded second edition has been totally revised and corrected. The reader finds two complete new chapters. One covers the exact solution of the finite temperature Schwinger model with periodic boundary conditions. This simple model supports instanton solutions – similarly as QCD – and allows for a detailed discussion of topological sectors in gauge theories, the anomaly-induced breaking of chiral symmetry and the intriguing role of fermionic zero modes. The other new chapter is devoted to interacting fermions at finite fermion density and finite temperature. Such low-dimensional models are used to describe long-energy properties of Dirac-type materials in condensed matter physics. The large-N solutions of the Gross-Neveu, Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and Thirring models are presented in great detail, where N denotes the number of fermion flavors. Towards the end of the book corrections to the large-N solution and simulation results of a finite number of fermion flavors are presented. Further problems are added at the end of each chapter in order to guide the reader to a deeper understanding of the presented topics. This book is meant for advanced students and young researchers who want to acquire the necessary tools and experience to produce research results in the statistical approach to Quantum Field Theory.

Book Synopsis Renormalization and Effective Field Theory by : Kevin Costello
Download or read book Renormalization and Effective Field Theory written by Kevin Costello and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum field theory has had a profound influence on mathematics, and on geometry in particular. However, the notorious difficulties of renormalization have made quantum field theory very inaccessible for mathematicians. This provides complete mathematical foundations for the theory of perturbative quantum field theory, based on Wilson's ideas of low-energy effective field theory and on the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism.
Book Synopsis String Field Theory by : Harold Erbin
Download or read book String Field Theory written by Harold Erbin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to string field theory (SFT). String theory is usually formulated in the worldsheet formalism, which describes a single string (first-quantization). While this approach is intuitive and could be pushed far due to the exceptional properties of two-dimensional theories, it becomes cumbersome for some questions or even fails at a more fundamental level. These motivations have led to the development of SFT, a description of string theory using the field theory formalism (second-quantization). As a field theory, SFT provides a rigorous and constructive formulation of string theory. The main focus of the book is the construction of the closed bosonic SFT. The accent is put on providing the reader with the foundations, conceptual understanding and intuition of what SFT is. After reading this book, the reader is able to study the applications from the literature. The book is organized in two parts. The first part reviews the notions of the worldsheet theory that are necessary to build SFT (worldsheet path integral, CFT and BRST quantization). The second part starts by introducing general concepts of SFT from the BRST quantization. Then, it introduces off-shell string amplitudes before providing a Feynman diagrams interpretation from which the building blocks of SFT are extracted. After constructing the closed SFT, the author outlines the proofs of several important properties such as background independence, unitarity and crossing symmetry. Finally, the generalization to the superstring is also discussed.
Book Synopsis Topology, Geometry and Quantum Field Theory by : Ulrike Luise Tillmann
Download or read book Topology, Geometry and Quantum Field Theory written by Ulrike Luise Tillmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-28 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium held in honour of the 60th birthday of Graeme Segal brought together leading physicists and mathematicians. Its topics were centred around string theory, M-theory, and quantum gravity on the one hand, and K-theory, elliptic cohomology, quantum cohomology and string topology on the other. Geometry and quantum physics developed in parallel since the recognition of the central role of non-abelian gauge theory in elementary particle physics in the late seventies and the emerging study of super-symmetry and string theory. With its selection of survey and research articles these proceedings fulfil the dual role of reporting on developments in the field and defining directions for future research. For the first time Graeme Segal's manuscript 'The definition of Conformal Field Theory' is published, which has been greatly influential over more than ten years. An introduction by the author puts it into the present context.
