Book Synopsis Lectures On Phase Transitions And The Renormalization Group by : Nigel Goldenfeld
Download or read book Lectures On Phase Transitions And The Renormalization Group written by Nigel Goldenfeld and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the elementary aspects of the physics of phases transitions and the renormalization group, this popular book is widely used both for core graduate statistical mechanics courses as well as for more specialized courses. Emphasizing understanding and clarity rather than technical manipulation, these lectures de-mystify the subject and show precisely "how things work." Goldenfeld keeps in mind a reader who wants to understand why things are done, what the results are, and what in principle can go wrong. The book reaches both experimentalists and theorists, students and even active researchers, and assumes only a prior knowledge of statistical mechanics at the introductory graduate level.Advanced, never-before-printed topics on the applications of renormalization group far from equilibrium and to partial differential equations add to the uniqueness of this book.

Book Synopsis Statistical Physics by : Leo P. Kadanoff
Download or read book Statistical Physics written by Leo P. Kadanoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented in this invaluable textbook has been tested in two courses. One of these is a graduate-level survey of statistical physics; the other, a rather personal perspective on critical behavior. Thus, this book defines a progression starting at the book-learning part of graduate education and ending in the midst of topics at the research level. To supplement the research-level side the book includes some research papers. Several of these are classics in the field, including a suite of six works on self-organized criticality and complexity, a pair on diffusion-limited aggregation, some papers on correlations near critical points, a few of the basic sources on the development of the real-space renormalization group, and several papers on magnetic behavior in a plain geometry. In addition, the author has included a few of his own papers.

Book Synopsis Statistical Physics of Particles by : Mehran Kardar
Download or read book Statistical Physics of Particles written by Mehran Kardar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical physics has its origins in attempts to describe the thermal properties of matter in terms of its constituent particles, and has played a fundamental role in the development of quantum mechanics. Based on lectures taught by Professor Kardar at MIT, this textbook introduces the central concepts and tools of statistical physics. It contains a chapter on probability and related issues such as the central limit theorem and information theory, and covers interacting particles, with an extensive description of the van der Waals equation and its derivation by mean field approximation. It also contains an integrated set of problems, with solutions to selected problems at the end of the book and a complete set of solutions is available to lecturers on a password protected website at www.cambridge.org/9780521873420. A companion volume, Statistical Physics of Fields, discusses non-mean field aspects of scaling and critical phenomena, through the perspective of renormalization group.

Book Synopsis Renormalization Group by : Giuseppe Benfatto
Download or read book Renormalization Group written by Giuseppe Benfatto and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1995-07-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling and self-similarity ideas and methods in theoretical physics have, in the last twenty-five years, coalesced into renormalization-group methods. This book analyzes, from a single perspective, some of the most important applications: the critical-point theory in classical statistical mechanics, the scalar quantum field theories in two and three space-time dimensions, and Tomonaga's theory of the ground state of one-dimensional Fermi systems. The dimension dependence is discussed together with the related existence of anomalies (in Tomonaga's theory and in 4 -e dimensions for the critical point). The theory of Bose condensation at zero temperature in three space dimensions is also considered. Attention is focused on results that can in principle be formally established from a mathematical point of view. The 4 -e dimensions theory, Bose condensation, as well as a few other statements are exceptions to this rule, because no complete treatment is yet available. However, the truly mathematical details are intentionally omitted and only referred to. This is done with the purpose of stressing the unifying conceptual structure rather than the technical differences or subtleties.

Book Synopsis Statistical Mechanics of Lattice Systems by : David Lavis
Download or read book Statistical Mechanics of Lattice Systems written by David Lavis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-03-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the interesting and difficult problems in statistical mechanics arise when the constituent particles of the system interact with each other with pair or multipartiele energies. The types of behaviour which occur in systems because of these interactions are referred to as cooperative phenomena giving rise in many cases to phase transitions. This book and its companion volume (Lavis and Bell 1999, referred to in the text simply as Volume 1) are princi pally concerned with phase transitions in lattice systems. Due mainly to the insights gained from scaling theory and renormalization group methods, this subject has developed very rapidly over the last thirty years. ' In our choice of topics we have tried to present a good range of fundamental theory and of applications, some of which reflect our own interests. A broad division of material can be made between exact results and ap proximation methods. We have found it appropriate to inelude some of our discussion of exact results in this volume and some in Volume 1. Apart from this much of the discussion in Volume 1 is concerned with mean-field theory. Although this is known not to give reliable results elose to a critical region, it often provides a good qualitative picture for phase diagrams as a whole. For complicated systems some kind of mean-field method is often the only tractable method available. In this volume our main concern is with scaling theory, algebraic methods and the renormalization group.

Book Synopsis Statistical Field Theory: Volume 1, From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory by : Claude Itzykson
Download or read book Statistical Field Theory: Volume 1, From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory written by Claude Itzykson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-29 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1: From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory. Volume 2: Strong Coupling, Monte Carlo Methods, Conformal Field Theory, and Random Systems. This two-volume work provides a comprehensive and timely survey of the application of the methods of quantum field theory to statistical physics, a very active and fruitful area of modern research. The first volume provides a pedagogical introduction to the subject, discussing Brownian motion, its anticommutative counterpart in the guise of Onsager's solution to the two-dimensional Ising model, the mean field or Landau approximation, scaling ideas exemplified by the Kosterlitz-Thouless theory for the XY transition, the continuous renormalization group applied to the standard phi-to the fourth theory (the simplest typical case) and lattice gauge theory as a pathway to the understanding of quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics. The second volume covers more diverse topics, including strong coupling expansions and their analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, two-dimensional conformal field theory, and simple disordered systems. The book concludes with a chapter on random geometry and the Polyakov model of random surfaces which illustrates the relations between string theory and statistical physics. The two volumes that make up this work will be useful to theoretical physicists and applied mathematicians who are interested in the exciting developments which have resulted from the synthesis of field theory and statistical physics.
Book Synopsis The Theory of Critical Phenomena by : J. J. Binney
Download or read book The Theory of Critical Phenomena written by J. J. Binney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-06-11 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The successful calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions is one of the main achievements of theoretical physics over the last quarter-century. This was achieved through the use of scaling and field-theoretic techniques which have since become standard equipment in many areas of physics, especially quantum field theory. This book provides a thorough introduction to these techniques. Continuous phase transitions are introduced, then the necessary statistical mechanics is summarized, followed by standard models, some exact solutions and techniques for numerical simulations. The real-space renormalization group and mean-field theory are then explained and illustrated. The final chapters cover the Landau-Ginzburg model, from physical motivation, through diagrammatic perturbation theory and renormalization to the renormalization group and the calculation of critical exponents above and below the critical temperature.
