Book excerpt: Communication is frequently identified in the literature as a major factor impacting Information Technology (IT) project failure. The importance of communication is amplified in buyer - seller relationships through the long-term impact of project failures on the future business of IT vendors with their customers. The formal communication between IT project sponsors from buyer firms and project managers from IT vendor firms within business to business markets is investigated through this study. Typical communication patterns between project sponsor and manager in high and low performing projects are identified. The antecedents of these patterns are assessed and the effectiveness of project sponsor - manager communication investigated. A multi-method approach is used with a quantitative analysis of a worldwide survey with 200 responses, followed by a qualitative analysis of three interviews with pairs of project sponsor and manager, each pair from the same project. Results show that project sponsors expect more analytic and verbal communication from project managers. A model shows the development from frequent informal communication to formal communication between project managers and sponsors. A second model shows how communication in high performing projects is determined by the level of collaboration between project managers and sponsors, as well as the degree of structure in project execution. Effectiveness of project sponsor and manager communication is found to be decreased through written statements about recent achievements, and increased through face-to-face meetings of the parties. A series of recommendations is provided to improve project sponsor - manager communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the fundamentals of project management in simple language and an easy-to-understand format. It is targeted principally at those who are learning or desiring to learn project management as well as those who are already taking project management as a course of study or as a profession. It covers all the basic aspects of project management including the core areas prescribed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) sixth edition. Although the PMBOK Guide seventh edition has significantly shifted focus from a process based standard to a principle based standard, it does not invalidate nor replace the detailed knowledge base contained in the sixth edition, which substantially emphasizes project management processes and knowledge areas. This is particularly apt for the traditional approach to project delivery, which is predictive in nature and has the bulk of the planning done upfront. The sections of the book are arranged in order of Project Management Processes as they fall within the respective Project Management Knowledge Areas. Experienced project manager, Davies Igberaese, presents all the basic content of traditional project management in a straightforward practical sequence as a typical project manager would go about the processes of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and closing a project without losing sight of the iterative nature of project management. The inclusion of Project Management Templates gives students and other users of the book the confidence required to effectively understand the basics of managing a wide variety of projects across disciplines including construction, building, industrial engineering, petroleum engineering, software engineering, information technology, business administration, and event management. Introduction to Project Management: A Source Book for Traditional PM Basics can serve as a core textbook for academic courses in project management, for preparing for PMP and CAPM Certification exams, as an excellent resource for new project managers, as well as a handy reference book for project sponsors.

Sadly, many of the purchases fail to live up to expectations. This book provides a blueprint of what to cover in the early stages of the procurement process so as to prevent the recurring problem of information systems projects that run over budget, over time and yet under perform. The questions the book answers are simple but fundamental: where to find advice; who should be involved; how to manage the purchase; how to decide what you need; which package or supplier to choose; how to manage the implementation, and how to know if the system is successful. Real examples of information system purchases are used to help provide practical guidance on the methods, the pitfalls and the keys to success. In addition the book contains several adaptable tables and checklists to provide a flexible and effective step-by-step framework for the entire process.
