Specific work focused on semiconductor quantum dots. The major achievements include the first demonstration of an all optically driven quantum NOT-gate based on using the exciton-Bloch vector as the qubit (Science 2003). We also demonstrated optical density matrix tomography on this system. Since the fast recombination time of quantum dot excitons may limit these systems for quantum information applications, we initiated experiments on negatively charged quantum dots (similar to ions) where for quantum information processing, the qubit would be the electron spin. The energy level structure in this system is a 3-level A-system, which is also of importance to novel coherent optical applications such as slow light and electromagnetic induced transparency. Our experiments in this system are just beginning, but we have successfully demonstrated optically induced coherence in this system, the unexpected effect of spontaneously generated spin coherence, and coherent optical control. A summary of our work leading up to this was published by invitation in Physics Today while the achievement of the quantum NOT-gate was reviewed in Photonics News.

Book excerpt: Understanding the coherent dynamics of electron spins in quantum dots (QDs) is important for potential applications in solid-state, spin-based electronics and quantum information processing. Here, results are presented focusing on optical initialization, manipulation, and readout of spin coherence in various semiconductor nanostructures. Layered semiconductor nanocrystals are fabricated containing a spherical "quantum shell" in which electrons and holes are confined. As in a planar quantum well, the quantized energy levels and g-factors are found to depend on the shell thickness. Taking this idea a step further, nanocrystals with a concentric, tunnel-coupled core and shell are investigated. Based on the energy and g-factor dependences in these structures, spins can be selectively initialized into, and read out from, states in the core and shell. In contrast to these two ensemble measurements, we next turn to measurements of single electron spins in single QDs. First, we demonstrate the detection of a single electron spin in a QD using a nondestructive, continuously averaged magneto-optical Kerr rotation (KR) measurement. This continuous single QD KR technique is then extended into the time domain using pulsed pump and probe lasers, allowing the observation of the coherent evolution of an electron spin state with nanosecond temporal resolution. By sweeping the delay between the pump and probe, the dynamics of the spin in the QD are mapped out in time, providing a direct measurement of the electron g-factor and spin lifetime. Finally, this time-resolved single spin measurement is used to observe ultrafast coherent manipulation of the spin in the QD using an off-resonant optical pulse. Via the optical Stark effect, this optical pulse coherently rotates the spin state through angles up to pi radians, on picosecond timescales.

Electron spin is one such effect that offers the opportunity to continue the gains predicted by Moore's Law, by taking advantage of the confluence of magnetics and semiconductor electronics in the newly emerging discipline of spin electronics. From a fundamental viewpoine, spin-polarization transport in a material occurs when there is an imbalance of spin populations at the Fermi energy. In ferromagnetic metals this imbalance results from a shift in the energy states available to spin-up and spin-down electrons. In practical applications, a ferromagnetic metal may be used as a source of spin-polarized electronics to be injected into a semiconductor, a superconductor or a normal metal, or to tunnel through an insulating barrier.

The ultimate goal is to build large systems consisting of billions of qubits and implement fast qubit operations with adequate accuracy, for solving problems that are intractable on classical computers (like factoring large numbers and quantum simulations). We develop and analyze a hardware platform for a scalable quantum computer based on semiconductor quantum dot (QD) electron spin qubits and their interaction with microcavity quantum well (QW) exciton-polaritons. This approach is based on the framework of previously proposed QuDOS architecture for surface code quantum computation. Despite the developments in techniques for implementing quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement and nearest-neighbor gates in QD spin systems, achieving the resource requirements for fault-tolerance still remains a challenge. In order to overcome this, our scheme relies on the indirect optical control of QD spins, resulting from the long-ranged Coulomb exchange interaction between the spin qubits and optically excited, spin-polarized, QW exciton-polaritons. The strength of this scheme is twofold. Firstly, by a careful design of the QW and QD it is possible to separate the optical eld from the QD manifold, thus preventing any unwanted backaction during a measurement event. Secondly, the bosonic nature of polaritons and their weak interaction with the solid-state environment allows the injection of numerous polaritons coherently in a single mode, increasing the nonlinearity in the qubit-polariton coupling, crucial for two-qubit operation. We develop schemes for implementing fast, high- delity, single qubit gate, two-qubit geometric phase gate and single-shot QND measurement. Furthermore, we investigate several issues critical for the robustness of the gate operations such as decoherence mechanisms, polariton-polariton interaction, phonon scattering etc.
