Book excerpt: "The Cloud! It sounds so fluffy and soft. Amorphous, remote, floating above the world. Run it in the Cloud, we cay. A modern metaphor, but once we had another name, a more descriptive name for using someone else's computer. We called it time-sharing. Today we mix the idea of using distant computers and the idea of communicating via a network and call the combination The Cloud, imagining we have invented something new. But it isn't so new after all. Beginning in the 1960s, a company created a successful business making remote computer services available inexpensively to anyone via a network built for that purpose. Companies offered online resources from banking to research, email to instant messaging, and the ability to run applications on powerful, remote computers and access them from anywhere. In doing so, they created the first cloud. They called it Tymnet, and the company was Tymshare. I worked for Tymnet for more that 12 years, from the beginning of 1980 until 1992. The people I worked with were some of the finest anywhere, and the memories of my years with Tymnet are among my fondest. It gives me great pleasure to present the story of the first cloud, as told by those who created it."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: The Giants of Russian Literature: The Greatest Russian Novels, Stories, Plays, Folk Tales & Legends' encapsulates an unprecedented span of Russian literary achievement, weaving through the transformative arcs of realism, romanticism, and the philosophical introspection characteristic of Russia's literary evolution. This anthology is meticulously curated, offering a spectrum from the dense, existential inquiries of Dostoevsky to the nuanced, social narratives of Chekhov, and the fantastical realms envisioned by Pushkin. The diversity in literary styles, from the poignant short stories of Saki (H.H. Munro) to the grand, epic novels and plays that have defined the ethos of an era, demonstrates the rich tapestry of Russian and related cultures contributions to global literature. The collective works included stand as a testament to the depth and variety of human experience as depicted in literary form, with each piece selected for its timeless relevance and profound impact. The contributing authors and editors of this anthology, leaders amongst the pantheon of Russian literary figures, bring a breadth of cultural, historical, and political context to the fore. Such variety encapsulates pivotal moments in literary and world history, from the intricacies of Tsarist Russia to the turbulent shifts of the Soviet era and beyond. The assembly of authors like Tolstoy, Gorky, and Andreyev, alongside less universally recognized yet equally pivotal figures such as Korolenko and Garshin, offers a panoramic view of the seismic shifts in literary expression and the socio-political undercurrents of their times. Their lives and works serve as prisms through which the broader narratives of Russian and global history can be explored, enriching the anthology with layers of complexity and insight. This anthology is not just a collection of significant works; it is a gateway to exploring the soulful depths, philosophical ponderings, and the reckonings with the human condition that Russian literature so adeptly explores. It invites readers into a rich dialogue across time and space, encouraging a deep and nuanced understanding of the themes that pervade Russian literary history. 'The Giants of Russian Literature' is an essential volume for anyone keen to immerse themselves in the profound narratives and diverse voices that have shaped not only Russian literature but also the world literary landscape. Its educational value and the breadth of insights it offers make it an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and enthusiasts eager to explore the complexities of life and humanity through the lens of one of the worlds most prolific literary traditions.

Book excerpt: The stories you are about to read are from traveling and a culmination from eight years of my wife and I living among the people in lands of rich stories, not excluding Ireland. It has given me great joy to write of our adventures in a format that takes the best of times, stirred with some pathos of fallen friends and then mixed into the tales within! These reminiscences will be treasured by my wife Pat and I - forever! No one character is represented in his or her entirety and no narrative can be said to be an actual event. These storied chapters herein, capture our lives as it might have happened. I have pasted the wonderful characters together from all the many vignettes we encompassed while dwelling amongst one of the most reflective societies today. Not reflective in some lofty sense, but as in a mirror of life that needs the rich loamy land and vibrant countryside to place one’s heart into. Ireland, with not much doubt, is the last and most beautiful, virginal country left today. Thanks to flying, there are many corners and stories on this earth that I have seen and wrote about of great exotic beauty and depth, but the endowments of pastoral Ireland leave one breathless. It’s soft and natural charm is the result of native Irishmen resisting the huge industrial revolution that has changed lives within the short span of our diminutive existences. The Emerald Isle is a refuge from the unbridled growth of material things. Time will undoubtedly take this last resort, but there are those of us who have advantaged ourselves with an affair of the heart - a sojourn with Ireland! The Author
