Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Greek Church: Translated, With Introduction and Notes II. The renderings contained in this volume are the product of many happy hours during the past five years. No method was adopted in the work. As the translator waded through the closely printed pages of the Greek offices, what appeared at first sight to be lines worthy of translation were taken up and examined, sometimes to be cast aside again because of some unremovable blemish, at other times to be moulded to the form which they now bear Of the forty-seven pieces, thirty - five appear for the first time in English verse. For the original, the translator has gone to the service - books, and for the most part has confined himself to the hymns which are to be found in the triodion, containing the Lenten services; and in the pentecostarion, in which are found the hymns for the services of Easter and Pentecost. A few specimens are also given from other offices, particularly that for Christmas. Renderings from the work of the earlier Greek hymn-writers are added at the end of this volume; but, unlike the hymns of the Church service-books, these hymns originally are in the classical measures, and illustrate the work of the best Christian poets, who in some cases wrote extensively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunny Side: A Book of Religious Songs for the Sunday School and the Home The feature of the book to which we desire to call especial attention, is a collection of nearly two-score German Child and Folk Songs which it contains, and which have been selected with great care from the rich mine of German song. Many of the accompany ing poems have been happily translated for us by Rev. Charles T. Brooks, who has kindly given his valuable services to our cause. We trust the sweet ness and sterling quality of these melodies will make them favorites in the Sunday-school. For the rest, we have tried to keep the tunes within the range of the children's voices, have printed the words under the music wherever possible, observed a natural order in the succession of the hymns, added two indexes for convenient reference, and thus aimed at producing a practical, helpful book in the religious nurture of the young. And so may this little work, the fruit of many hours of pleasant labor, go into many a Sunday-school and home, to inculcate a. Natural, joyous piety, and bring the cheer and blessing of song into the hearts of. Young and old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Pursuit of Belief - Christian Classics Collection encapsulates an extraordinary confluence of theological inquiry, philosophical meditation, and literary artistry. This anthology traverses a vast temporal landscape, from the patristic period to the threshold of the contemporary, gathering a multitude of voices that have shaped Christian thought and the broader cultural legacy of humanity. It juxtaposes the divine comedy of Dante Alighieri with the existential musings of Friedrich Nietzsche, the transcendental reflections of Ralph Waldo Emerson with the spiritual allegories of John Bunyan, and the mystic insights of St. Teresa of Ávila with the practical Christianity of Charles M. Sheldon, showcasing an unparalleled range of literary styles and theological perspectives. The collection stands as a testimony to the enduring dialogue between faith and reason, individual belief and societal norms. The contributing authors and editors, drawn from varied epochs and geographies, reflect a rich tapestry of historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts. Figures like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Leo Tolstoy stand alongside St. Augustine and Martin Luther, exemplifying the anthologys alignment with significant historical and literary movements. This diversity not only illuminates the multifaceted nature of Christian thought but also demonstrates how these varied voices contribute to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the anthologys central themes. Such an assemblage encourages readers to discern the intricate relationships between faith, culture, and personal conviction across different periods and places. The Pursuit of Belief - Christian Classics Collection is an indispensable volume for those interested in the intersection of faith, literature, and philosophy. It offers readers the unique opportunity to engage with a wide array of perspectives and themes, encouraging a comprehensive exploration of Christian belief as both a personal journey and a collective experience. This anthology is not merely a scholarly endeavor but a voyage through time and thought, inviting readers to ponder profound questions and explore the myriad ways in which the pursuit of belief shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves. As such, it is highly recommended for students, scholars, and anyone with a keen interest in the historical and philosophical dimensions of faith.

This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translation of Buchanan's Latin Psalms Into English Verse The Psalms are sacred poems, containing the doctrines, precepts, history, and prophecy communicated at greater length by the other parts of the inspired writings of the Old and New Testaments. The Psalms likewise express all the emotions of the pious soul, in great variety of language, suited to every circumstance of human life. They were composed, for the most part, one thousand, and one of them at least, fifteen hundred years, before the birth of Christ, that they might be sung in the worship of God, among the Jews, and they have been used by them, in succeeding generations, in their religious assemblies. They were originally composed in Hebrew verse, and translations of them have been made into many languages, both in prose and verse. They are still sung in Christian assemblies of various nations, in poetical versions, which they understand. A poetical version of them, in English, has for many years been sanctioned by the Church of Scotland, which is remarkable for its fidelity to the original Hebrew, and for the ancient simplicity of its style. Buchanan made a paraphrastic translation of them in Latin verse, in the reign of Queen Mary, in Scotland, to whom it was dedicated, and to whose son, James VI. of Scotland, and I. of England, he was afterwards tutor for many years. He has clothed his paraphrase with the most elegant Latin, and with the most accurate and melodious versification. Every good Latin scholar will, I think, in reading Buchanan's paraphrases of the Psalms, be filled with delight and admiration, while he deeply feels the interesting and important nature of the subjects, expressed by such beauty and sublimity of style, as may cause the heart to glow with devotion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns From the East: Being Centos and Suggestions From the Service Books This fourth series of Hymns from the Office Books of The Holy Eastern Church, differs from the preceding three in this, that the hymns are less translations or renderings, and more centos and suggestions. One cannot continue long to interest him self in any work, and receive from time to time the observations and criticisms of his fellows, without, if he have his eyes and mind open to receive impressions, feeling himself impelled to alter his methods in some particular or other. In previous volumes the author has been careful to give, for the most part, carefully executed - that is to say, truthfully rendered translations from the originals. Work of that kind is useful, and absolutely necessary for certain purposes; but, unless for the h'ymnologist, or for the liturgiologist, it is far from being attractive. To be true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ of Cynewulf, a Poem in Three Parts: The Advent, the Ascension, and the Last Judgment, Translated Into English Prose This translation was undertaken at the suggestion of Professor Albert S. Cook, and closely conforms in read ings and punctuation to his recent edition of the C/zrz'st. Through his kindness I have been furnished with the proof-sheets as needed, and have thereby found my labor materially lessened. Specific acknowledgments to this edition are usually made in the foot-notes, but many of the Biblical parallels come from the same source. Through out my work I have had the benefit of Professor Cook's ripe scholarship and sound judgment; for his unfailing kindness and helpfulness I wish to express my deep sense of gratitude. It also gives me pleasure to acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. Robert K. Root, who has care fully read the whole of my manuscript; and to Dr. Charles G. Osgood and Dr. Frank H.
