Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the impact of intercultural learning, intercultural social interaction and critical reflection on the experience of overseas Chinese postgraduate students in a British university. It illustrates that students' individual intercultural learning experiences may vary according to prevailing cultural tendencies, their preparedness for and openness towards different education norms, level of intercultural awareness and understanding, plus motivation for personal change through sociocultural encounter and interaction. This is an in-depth one-year ethnographic study of 10 overseas Chinese students' life stories and perceptions of lived experiences studying for master's courses in a British university. It takes intercultural leaming to be a reflexive process of intercultural adaptation, which leads to qualitative changes in students' learning approaches, perspectives and worldviews. The findings of the research also suggest that intercultural leaming is an engine of change, personal growth and identity development. The methodology of the study is broadly constructivist and interpretive. It elicited and analysed the participants' experiences from their own perspectives. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, life stories, conversations between the researcher and participants and amongst the participants, and reflective research journals formed the primary data sources. Accounts of students' experiences were jointly constructed by the participants and the researcher and throughout the study these social relations are problematised and observed reflexively. What emerges is a series of narratives where opportunities for participants' meaning making and individual theorisation create a context for interpretation and analysis. Critical self reflection encouragedb y the researchp rocesse mergesa s a tool for learning where participants go through an intersubjective self analysis and achieve a self awareness which is significant for their transformed learning experience and continued engagementin the learning and social practices.C entral to all the voices and narratives are participants' perceptions of the development of their self identities. Self identity in this thesis is seen as a social phenomenon where the researcher engages her own self identity in the research process, consequently becoming a changing and changed agent. This study is particularly relevant to Chinese students and other overseas students, academic tutors, student advisers higher education policy makers and academic researchersI.t provides with practical information to understandt he nature and process of intercultural learning and may shed light on the development or modiflcation of strategies for intemationalisation of British higher education, restructuring counselling and support scheme as well as redesigning academic curricula offered to postgraduate overseas Chinese students and other students.

It emphasises the importance of the space itself as an arena of interaction, belonging and power, where conduct and modes of communication are often regulated by political authorities and societal expectations. Specifically, the book focuses on the following: • the extent to which the ICS facilitated interaction in different settings • the way in which interaction during ICS contributed to language learning • the degree in which the interaction during ICS contributed to culture learning and • the role of identity in the learning process in the ICS. The main argument of the book is that while the ICS promoted multilingual learning space for in-class and out-of-class interactions, which further facilitated language and culture learning to a great extent, Australian students’ identities and self-concepts also played a core mediating role throughout individual learning trajectories.

Book excerpt: International Education and the Chinese Learner is one of the first full-length studies in the relatively new field of transnational pedagogy to explore the role of the Chinese learner in international schools and universities across the globe. It describes the unprecedented growth of international schools and university exchange programs during the past decade together with the way in which Chinese learners at all levels have taken advantage of these opportunities and have been scrutinized in the process. The results of this internationalization have in some cases solidified stereotypes about Chinese learners and in other instances have helped to overcome those prejudices. Teachers within the international schools comment about the challenges of integrating students from different ethnic and national backgrounds in their schools and about the rewards of developing intercultural programs that will give the students the most substantial, diverse, and ethical education and encourage cross-cultural understanding, build academic skills, and develop character. University teachers ù both Chinese and Western ù describe the opportunities and challenges for cross-cultural teaching and learning within the classrooms of their own countries and in global classrooms where local and international teachers together advance new perspectives based on team teaching, interdisciplinarity, and intercultural enquiry. Janette Ryan is a lecturer in education at Monash University. She specializes in cross-cultural teaching and teaching for international students. Gordon Slethaug is a visiting professor in English studies and communications at the University of Southern Denmark and has previously been professor of English at the University of Waterloo, Canada and director of American Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He has recently been visiting Lingnan professor at the University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-sen University in China and senior Fulbright professor at the University of Southern Denmark.
