It illustrates that students' individual intercultural learning experiences may vary according to prevailing cultural tendencies, their preparedness for and openness towards different education norms, level of intercultural awareness and understanding, plus motivation for personal change through sociocultural encounter and interaction. This is an in-depth one-year ethnographic study of 10 overseas Chinese students' life stories and perceptions of lived experiences studying for master's courses in a British university. It takes intercultural leaming to be a reflexive process of intercultural adaptation, which leads to qualitative changes in students' learning approaches, perspectives and worldviews. The findings of the research also suggest that intercultural leaming is an engine of change, personal growth and identity development. The methodology of the study is broadly constructivist and interpretive. It elicited and analysed the participants' experiences from their own perspectives. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, life stories, conversations between the researcher and participants and amongst the participants, and reflective research journals formed the primary data sources. Accounts of students' experiences were jointly constructed by the participants and the researcher and throughout the study these social relations are problematised and observed reflexively. What emerges is a series of narratives where opportunities for participants' meaning making and individual theorisation create a context for interpretation and analysis. Critical self reflection encouragedb y the researchp rocesse mergesa s a tool for learning where participants go through an intersubjective self analysis and achieve a self awareness which is significant for their transformed learning experience and continued engagementin the learning and social practices.C entral to all the voices and narratives are participants' perceptions of the development of their self identities. Self identity in this thesis is seen as a social phenomenon where the researcher engages her own self identity in the research process, consequently becoming a changing and changed agent. Janette Ryan is a lecturer in education at Monash University. She specializes in cross-cultural teaching and teaching for international students.
