The plasma fuel reformer is set up to produce syngas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide gas mixture) from partial oxidation of hydrocarbons. The behavior of methane as fuel has been investigated to characterize and simulate the plasmatron performance. The goal of this work has been improved understanding of the physical/chemical processes within the reactor. The simulation tool used was CHEMKIN 3.7, using the GRI methane combustion mechanism. The Partially Stirred Reactor application (PASR) simulates random mixing by a frequency mixing parameter, which is directly dependant of the system fluid dynamic properties. The fuel reformer was designed as a reactor where combustion is initiated by an electric discharge due to ohmic heating of the arc region. From discharge observations, energy estimations and model simulations, it was found that the electric arc initiates combustion by locally raising the temperature and then propagating the reaction by heat and mass transfer/mixing to the surroundings. Simulation results demonstrated that there is an optimum characteristic mixing time for each residence time, depending on the initial temperature reached at the arc. It was also found that for given power input into the system, the more spread the energy is, or the more mass is heated to a moderate temperature, the better the calculated performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a comprehensive practical review of the new technologies used to obtain hydrogen more efficiently via catalytic, electrochemical, bio- and photohydrogen production. Hydrogen has been gaining more attention in both transportation and stationary power applications. Fuel cell-powered cars are on the roads and the automotive industry is demanding feasible and efficient technologies to produce hydrogen. The principles and methods described herein lead to reasonable mitigation of the great majority of problems associated with hydrogen production technologies. The chapters in this book are written by distinguished authors who have extensive experience in their fields, and readers will have a chance to compare the fundamental production techniques and learn about the pros and cons of these technologies. The book is organized into three parts. Part I shows the catalytic and electrochemical principles involved in hydrogen production technologies. Part II addresses hydrogen production from electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) by decomposing organic compound into hydrogen in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). The final part of the book is concerned with photohydrogen generation. Recent developments in the area of semiconductor-based nanomaterials, specifically semiconductor oxides, nitrides and metal free semiconductor-based nanomaterials for photocatalytic hydrogen production are extensively discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed cold plasma reforming is a novel method to harvest hydrogen from hydrocarbons. The harvested hydrogen can feed a fuel cell for distributed generation of electricity in a stationary or mobile platform. The cold plasma arc is generated by a pulsating high voltage waveform. The arc rotates in the magnetic field caused by a ring permanent magnet, thus increasing the collision area between the arc and the fuel. Due to the difficulties of measurement of plasma properties such as ion and electron temperature without disturbing the plasma, multiphysics simulation is a key step in the design of the reformer, thereby increasing the hydrogen harvest rate in the syngas. In this work, a 3D multiphysics simulation including fluid dynamics, thermal response, electromagnetic fields, and chemical reactions has been carried out to assist in the design of the reformer and the selection of the permanent magnet. The reformer parameters include input flow rate, electrode size and shape, the length of the air gap, and the frequency and the duty cycle of pulses. Experiments were carried out to verify the simulation results. The 3D multiphysics simulation is demonstrated to be an effective tool to assist in the design of the reformer. The electromagnetic interference caused by the pulsed cold plasma on probes and printed circuit boards is investigated. The hydrogen harvest rate has been improved from 58.7% to 67.8% with the introduction of the magnet.

Book excerpt: Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest for various gas conversion applications, such as CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals and fuels, N2 fixation for the synthesis of NH3 or NOx, methane conversion into higher hydrocarbons or oxygenates. It is also widely used for air pollution control (e.g., VOC remediation). Plasma catalysis allows thermodynamically difficult reactions to proceed at ambient pressure and temperature, due to activation of the gas molecules by energetic electrons created in the plasma. However, plasma is very reactive but not selective, and thus a catalyst is needed to improve the selectivity. In spite of the growing interest in plasma catalysis, the underlying mechanisms of the (possible) synergy between plasma and catalyst are not yet fully understood. Indeed, plasma catalysis is quite complicated, as the plasma will affect the catalyst and vice versa. Moreover, due to the reactive plasma environment, the most suitable catalysts will probably be different from thermal catalysts. More research is needed to better understand the plasma–catalyst interactions, in order to further improve the applications.

Because of this versatility, the demand for hydrogen is sure to increase as we aim to explore more sustainable methods of energy. Furthermore, Sustainable Hydrogen Production provides methodologies, models, and analysis techniques to help achieve better use of resources, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. The book is intellectually rich and interesting as well as practical. The fundamental methods of hydrogen production are categorized based on type of energy source: electrical, thermal, photonic, and biochemical. Where appropriate, historical context is introduced. Thermodynamic concepts, illustrative examples, and case studies are used to solve concrete power engineering problems. Addresses the fundamentals of hydrogen production using electrical, thermal, photonic, and biochemical energies Presents new models, methods, and parameters for performance assessment Provides historical background where appropriate Outlines key connections between hydrogen production methods and environmental impact/sustainable development Provides illustrative examples, case studies, and study problems within each chapter

Both noncatalytic and catalytic (with a catalyst downstream from a homogeneous reforming zone) have been studied. Onboard conversion of biofuels into hydrogen rich gas opens up a range of opportunities for reducing petroleum consumption. The plasmatron response has been determined using real time gas analysis techniques. For cold start, the response of a plasmatron fuel reformer using homogeneous reforming was faster than that from a plasmatron fuel reformer that included a catalyst. In addition, hydrogen production during warm start has also been studied. This mode of operation could be particularly relevant to some aftertreatment applications, where the hydrogen rich gas needs to be produced in short, frequent pulses. Concepts have been developed for optimal regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filters, using hydrogen rich gas. The goal is the simplification of the aftertreatment system, increasing reliability, fuel penalty minimization, and minimization of fuel reformer system requirements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-temperature non-equilibrium gaseous discharges represent nearly ideal media for boosting plasma-based chemical reactions. In these discharges the energy of plasma electrons, after being received from the electromagnetic field, is transferred to the other degrees of freedom differently, ideally with only a small part going to the translational motion of heavy gas particles. This unique property enables the important application of non-equilibrium plasmas for greenhouse gas conversion. While the degree of discharge non-equilibrium often defines the energetic efficiency of conversion, other factors are also of a great importance, such as type of discharge, presence of plasma catalysis, etc. This book is focused on the recent achievements in optimization and understanding of non-equilibrium plasma for gas conversion via plasma modeling and experimental work.
