Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Jubilee, 1849-1949 Praise ye the Lord. 0 give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good; for His mercy endureth forever. Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord.j Who can show forth all His praise? These words of Psalm 106 fill our hearts during these wonderful days of our Centennial Anniversary. God has truly been good unto us, and as we recall to mind how He has built and blessed His Church in our midst, we are con strained to say: Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be His glorious name forever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Oration the Voices of the Past Tonight we come, at our mother's call, to celebrate her centennial jubilee. Not a single absent member! For, whether in the flesh or in the spirit, all have come, and to the roll-call of this gala hour answer here. Hoist to the top Old Glory's rippling colors! Bring forth the timbre] and the harp, and let the anthems swell to heaven from all the daughters of song. But, to warm our hearts, we need no other wine than Memory's. Horace may prefer the old Falernian from the Italian hills. But we'll drink to our mother's health in the rarer vintage of her own purple clusters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration at Braintree, Mass: July 4, 1876 An American in a foreign land, speaking of his own country, would naturally dwell upon its national aspects, its history as a whole, its marvellous resources, extended domain, considering those masculine traits that suggest and reveal force, renown, and results. Upon American soil the same individual will turn with warmer and tenderer emotions to the "spot of his origin," and will be drawn by ties of affection to his home, to the town of his nativity, regarding all that concerns it with minute and special interest. With such filial regard and affection let us recite, on this glorious anniversary, the story of the birth and growth of our venerable mother town. Tracing back this interesting narrative for two hundred and thirty-six years, we shall find, "A thousand fantasies Begin to throng into our memory, Of calling shapes, and beckoning shadows dire, And airy tongues, that syllable men's names On sands, and stones, and desert wilderness." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarter Centennial Historical Sketch By the "Great Fire" in Chicago, October, 1871, there were lost the Records of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Theological Seminary, also the Records of their Executive Committee, the official Reports of the Treasurer and Agent, as well as many other important documents. In consequence only a meager History of the Seminary did the Committee, appointed for that purpose, count themselves able to make. They have, however, been gratefully surprised to find how much reliable history they still could gather. This required minute search in private diaries and letters, in written memoranda, published periodicals and the fortunately preserved duplicates of Reports made by Mr. Kedzie during his Agency, and involved also extensive correspondence. Often long search and much correspondence has been necessary to settle a date or fact, which could be recorded in a single line. The Committee have spared no pains to make this History accurate. For all important dates and facts they found some printed document, written memorandum, or personal testimony, on which they could rely. Thus they have been able to gather the important facts concerning the organization and work of the Seminary thus far, which, else, were likely to perish with this generation. A review of those early times awakens conflicting emotions in the minds of those participating therein. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book excerpt: From its foundation in 1826, UCL embraced a progressive and pioneering spirit. It was the first university in England to admit students regardless of religion and made higher education affordable and accessible to a much broader section of society. It was also effectively the first university to welcome women on equal terms with men. From the outset UCL showed a commitment to innovative ideas and new methods of teaching and research. This book charts the history of UCL from 1826 through to the present day, highlighting its many contributions to society in Britain and around the world. It covers the expansion of the university through the growth in student numbers and institutional mergers. It documents shifts in governance throughout the years and the changing social and economic context in which UCL operated, including challenging periods of reconstruction after two World Wars. Today UCL is one of the powerhouses of research and teaching, and a truly global university. It is currently seventh in the QS World University Rankings. This completely revised and updated edition features a new chapter based on interviews with key individuals at UCL. It comes at a time of ambitious development for UCL with the establishment of an entirely new campus in East London, UCL East, and Provost Michael Arthur’s ‘UCL 2034’ strategy which aims to secure the university’s long-term future and commits UCL to delivering global impact.

Book excerpt: This book is among the rare contributions to the 150th anniversary of 1848 which takes a completely new, theoretically informed approach. Instead of a traditional social or political history, the authors analyse the dichotomy between the international dimension in the ideas of the revolution and the nationalisation of memories in its commemorations over the past 150 years. The book offers original research on the history of European ideas and takes part in the current debate about the relationship between history and memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.
