Book excerpt: The book, "Catholic Charismatic Renewal and Life in the Spirit" is a must read for all Christians who desire the deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit and the Pentecostal experience. It is a book that will help one to understand the work of the third Person of the Blessed Trinity, God the Holy Spirit and to maintain an ever-deepening relationship with Him. It illuminatingly explains gifts, in particular the gifts of prophecy and tongues which the author depicted as the prominent gifts of Pentecost. He maintains that the Fresh Outpouring of Pentecost is a continuous event and explains the purpose of sending the Holy Spirit. The author argues that the gift of tongues is for every baptised Christian but not mandatory, and he elaborately explains the spiritual benefits of the gift of tongues, as well as how to desire the gift of tongues and indeed other gifts. The evidence of the author's knowledge of the bible was amazing as he underpins all his claims with precise quotations from the Holy Book. This book is timely because it is only through the work of the Spirit that the tide of our contemporary society, in which shameful sins are increasingly being applauded, supported and even legally enthroned, will be turned. The understanding of the renewal leads to life in the Spirit which this book aims to foster. I therefore encourage you not only to get this book, but also to read it for the all-important understanding and to deepen relationship with God.

Book excerpt: Charles Whitehead, an international leader of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, encourages us to take a fresh look at the person and promise of the Spirit as revealed in the Scriptures and throughout two thousand years of Church teaching and history. In clear and simple language, Whitehead describes the meaning of the baptism in the Holy Spirit and its relationship to sacramental Baptism and Confirmation. He also delineates the gifts most often associated with baptism in the Holy Spirit, which he calls the "knowing," "doing," and "speaking" gifts. As we continue to "walk" in the Spirit, he says, the Lord will reveal his mind and will to us and guide us in all we do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of the charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church has brought with it both controversy and confusion, and it has raised a number of important theological questions. Is it an authentic renewal movement? Exactly what is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? How should we understand the gift of tongues? What is prophecy? Does God really heal by supernatural means? One by one, Francis Sullivan takes up these controversial points in one of the most thorough theological investigations yet undertaken into the Catholic charismatic renewal. 'Charisms and Charismatic Renewal' is a scholarly analysis of this dynamic renewal movement for those who want to know more about its history, its theological and scriptural bases, its present impact on the church, and its probable future course.

Book excerpt: Soon after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit came upon his disciples and strengthened them to be the bold witnesses of Jesus. They were no longer afraid of worldly powers because they have received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. They could even have the courage to die for Christ. We know from the history that, most of them are brutally killed during the days of persecution. During the time of apostles all the Christian believers were gathered together for prayer and worship in the secret rooms, as a result, they all experienced the presence and the fruit of Holy Spirit in their lives.Soon after the second Vatican council, a new movement emerged in the Catholic community that was charismatic renewal movement. In order to have a clear understanding about charismatic movement the topic of my choice was "Catholic charismatic renewal movement; its influence in the Christian spiritual life." The entire work is divided in to three chapters and the discussion begins with the narration about the historical evolution of the charismatic movement, its origin, initial phase and blooming phase. Subsequently it sees the cause of its spreading in to all over the world. Then we try to know about nine charisms its relevance and its aim according to the teachings of St. Paul the apostle. Then will try to understand the Pauline teachings of these charisms. Similarly, the contributions of second Vatican council and the views and opinions of different popes about the charismatic movement are also investigated. Then we shall see the different dimensions of charismatic movement like, ecclesial, baptism of Spirit, ecumenical and eschatological. Finally, we make a critical appraisal. It includes the evaluation of the positives- a special devotion to the Holy Spirit, emergence of prayer groups, Marian devotions, sense of missionary zeal and the increasing number of vocations to priesthood and the religious life- and the negatives- religious fundamentalism, over emphasis on eschatology and over emphasis on sin and the guilt- of charismatic movement in the passage of times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the charismatic movement penetrated the Protestant churches and then impacted the Catholic Church, great hopes for Christian unity were aroused among many. These hopes peaked with the great Kansas City conference of 1977 and the "Pentecost over Europe" gathering in Strasbourg, France, in 1982. After these high points, the Renewal's unity dynamic weakened at the same time as the ecumenical movement was losing momentum. Dr. Hocken argues that the charismatic movement was always a grace for unity, and that this can be seen from how it began and spread. Its deep orientation to unity finds its foundation in the "end-times" significance of baptism in the Spirit poured out on Christians from so many traditions that reinforces the "one hope" for the coming of the Lord. Many developments of the last twenty years indicate that the time is now ripe for an ecumenism of the Spirit within which the charismatic impulses of the Holy Spirit can purify and deepen the wider movement for Christian unity. Growing reconciliation between Evangelicals and Catholics suddenly seems less utopian as Pope Francis shows the servant face of a humbler Catholic Church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just over one hundred years, the Pentecostal-charismatic movement has transformed world Christianity. Noted for their rediscovery of spiritual gifts and commitment to world evangelization, 700 million Pentecostals and charismatics now account for more than 27 percent of the global Christian movement. The Pentecostal-charismatic movement has been more noted for its activism than for theological reflection. But this may be changing. The Holy Spirit as Person and Power challenges traditional theology to take account of what has been disclosed in the dynamism and variety of charismatic experience. The author is a theologically trained practitioner, impacted in midlife by a transforming experience of the Holy Spirit. He has been a hands-on leader in the renewal movement. Now, in his later years, he reflects on the meaning of the grace imparted to the church by the renewing activity of God's Spirit. This is not the work of an enthusiast claiming a new revelation. Rather, the author draws attention to many nuances in the Bible's description of the Spirit that have been overlooked in traditional pneumatology. By relating these insights to Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and evangelical theology, he has produced a book with ecumenical implications for all branches of world Christianity.

Book excerpt: Different, it's just different. Besides, it comes with a significant anomaly, at least in the United States. The difference is the perspective with which one sees and experiences the major elements of Christianity: faith, mission, Church, love of neighbor, Jesus and the Holy Spirit; in sum, the entire daily walk of a Christian life. This new perspective develops from involvement in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Note that popes St. Paul VI, St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis have all endorsed this "current of grace" as Pope Francis refers to it. The Renewal brings new light on seeking a personal relationship with Jesus, mission, discipleship, evangelization and, above all, reliance on the Holy Spirit. Both the Catholic Church and the lives of the people involved are greatly empowered and invigorated. Interestingly, and this is one reason this book is important, in terms of spiritual growth this current of grace flows two ways. The Renewal, while primarily experiential, leads to better understanding of key elements of Christian teaching. Alternately, better understanding of the teachings (the theology) removes barriers and opens paths to the experiential, the gifts of the Holy Spirit and direct awareness of God's presence This two-way dynamic is energizing and transforming the Church across Africa, South and Central America, and much of the rest of the world. However, and here is the anomaly, in the United States where it originated just over fifty years ago, it is hardly causing a ripple. While closely related Pentecostalism is significantly impacting American Protestant communities, the Catholic version lingers in relative obscurity. This, in spite of the fact that the Renewal draws people closer to the heart of the Church. In any case, both sides of this dynamic are important. Understanding Church teaching is important, as is the outpouring of the gifts of the Spirit; prophecy, healing, deliverance, tongues and the rest (1Corithians 12). It is also very good. St Paul calls the presence of the Holy Spirit the foretaste of heaven, and with good reason. That is what this book is about, both sides and the links between them.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
