Excerpt: ...ready, for it was expected that the Boers, from their position on the neighbouring kopjes, would open fire. They did not. They sat there sullen and silent; and the only show of fight was an occasional sniping shot from some trenches on a ridge formed by three hills (or knolls rising out of one hill) in the tongue of land running down to the drift. This had to be stopped somehow; and two battalions moved forward. Up they went; a long, loose, brown line, and as they advanced at the double the Mausers one by one ceased their spitting as the holders of them bolted towards their main entrenchments, two miles further back. That night there was bustle at the ferry, as waggons, guns, and men poured over in one continuous stream. The Scottish Rifles and the Rifle Brigade bivouacked in the abandoned advance trenches. The sailormen took charge of the ferry, and their mighty efforts secured the passage of the river with a speed almost incredible. It was 5.30 p.m. on the 16th when the ferry was put in working order, and in ten hours every man and every waggon had crossed. A howitzer batter-also reached the north bank, and all the field guns, leaving only the 47's perched on Mount Alice. Next morning (17th) a furious din arose at about a quarter to 6 a.m. It was the naval guns getting into action against the main Boer position. With hearty goodwill the tars ladled out their lyddite with both hands, and about three-quarters of an hour later the howitzer battery joined in the shelling. On Brakfontein and Spion Kop the shells rained, and as they fell great clouds arose, as earth and rocks flew in the air. The gunnery was magnificent; and the enemy speedily found their trenches becoming uncomfortable. They themselves made no reply; and so cunningly were...

Book excerpt: On 11 October 1899 the Second Boer War between the British and the Boers began. The war saw the most powerful professional army in the world pitted against the unconventional tactics of the undisciplined Boers. Although the Boers were finally forced to surrender in May 1902 the war had taken its toll on their opponents who lost some 8,000 troops killed in action with a further 13,000 dying from disease. This book covers the organisation, uniforms and very different tactics involved in the conflict, from guerrilla warfare to a final war of attrition that the Boers could not hope to win.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before his finest hour as Britain's wartime leader, Winston Churchill emerged on the world stage as a brazen foreign correspondent, covering wars of empire in Cuba, India, the Sudan, and South Africa. In those far-flung corners of the world, reporting from the front lines between 1895 and 1900, Churchill mastered his celebrated command of language and formed strong opinions about war. He thought little of his own personal safety, so convinced was he of his destiny, jumping at any chance to be where bullets flew and canons roared. "I have faith in my star that I am intended to do something in the world," he wrote to his mother at the age of twenty-three before heading into battle. Based on his private letters and war reportage, Winston Churchill Reporting intertwines young Winston's daring exploits in combat, adventures in distant corners of the globe, and rise as a major literary talent experiences that shaped the world leader he was to become.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic story of the Boer War and Harry 'Breaker' Morant: drover, horseman, bush poet - murderer or hero? Most Australians have heard of the Boer War and of Harry 'Breaker' Morant, a figure who rivals Ned Kelly as an archetypal Australian folk hero. But Morant was a complicated man. Born in England and immigrating to Queensland in 1883, he established a reputation as a rider, polo player and poet who submitted ballads to The Bulletin and counted Banjo Paterson as a friend. Travelling on his wits and the goodwill of others, Morant was quick to act when appeals were made for horsemen to serve in the war in South Africa. He joined up, first with the South Australian Mounted Rifles and then with a South African irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers. The adventure would not go as Breaker planned. In October 1901 Lieutenant Harry Morant and two other Australians, Lieutenants Peter Handcock and George Witton, were arrested for the murder of Boer prisoners. Morant and Handcock were court-martialled and executed in February 1902 as the Boer War was in its closing stages, but the debate over their convictions continues to this day. With his masterful command of story, Peter FitzSimons takes us to the harsh landscape of southern Africa and into the bloody action of war against an unpredictable force using modern commando tactics. The truths FitzSimons uncovers about 'the Breaker' and the part he played in the Boer War are astonishing - and finally we will know if the Breaker was a hero, a cad, a scapegoat or a criminal.

The Boers proved to be formidable opponents, masterfully compensating for inferior numbers with grim determination, resourcefulness and strong religious faith. Their mobility, expert use of cover, and knowledge of the terrain, in which they employed powerful long-range magazine rifles, gave them initial advantages. By contrast the British suffered from inadequate transport, insufficient mounted troops and poor intelligence. Despite marshalling the immense resources of their empire, the British were to be severely tested in a war which one general described as 'the graveyard of many a soldier's reputation'.
