The first section focuses on career theory and research with racial and ethnic minorities. These chapters also summarize other theories from ethnic minority psychology that add to our understanding of minority career development. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the perceptions of racial identity salience, career decision-making self-efficacy and career related barriers affected the career choice traditionality for African American women. The multiple self-referent model (Brown-Collins & Sussewell, 1986) was used as a theoretical framework to conceptualize the study in order to evaluate what possible factors may influence the career development process of Black women. One hundred and eighteen women were surveyed from predominantly White and predominantly Black campuses. It was predicted that women who endorsed traditional career choices would perceive more career related barriers and have lower levels of career decision-making self-efficacy than their non-traditional counterparts. Additionally, previous research has suggested that African American women may cluster in more traditional occupations as a way to limit their exposure to racism. As a result, it was predicted that Black women who chose more traditional occupations would perceive racism as a greater career related barrier than sexism. The influence of racial identity salience, particularly the psychological and socio-political domains, on the career choice traditionality of Black women was also evaluated. The following instruments were utilized: Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy - Short Form; the African American Identity Attitudes Scale; Career Barriers Inventory - Revised; and a demographics/career questionnaire. The results did not support these hypotheses or the conceptualization of the multiple self-referent model. However, these findings suggest that the career development of Black women is a complex process that warrants further investigation. The limitations of the current study as well as directions for future research will be discussed.

Book excerpt: The career development and career decision-making needs of African-American males have generated much inquiry. Two year colleges currently serve as the predominant point of entry for many African-American male students seeking baccalaureate degrees. However, the transition to and eventual success at the four-year institution is often met with challenges. The inability to choose a major that may lead to a desired career has the potential to serve as a barrier for some students. From the lens of social cognitive career theory, this qualitative study was conducted to examine the experiences of undecided, African-American male transfer students at a large, four-year metropolitan university. Upon analyzing data from the interviews, themes were developed according to three research questions. Themes that offered insight into major selection process included: (a) choosing a major that offered potential job stability/security, (b) experiences related to academic ability, and (c) experiences with gender relative to career decision-making. Participation in the Direct Connect program was the minor theme found related to experiences encountered in the transfer process that influence major and/or career development. Themes related to the development of career decision-making self-efficacy included: (a) choosing careers believed to be consistent with one's person, (b) indecision while at the community college, (c) engagement in practical experiences, (d) solving problems, (e) meeting with advisors and counselors at the community college, and (e) involvement in extracurricular activities.

The significant influence of others, perception and awareness of the industry, resistance to servitude, and personal background were explored in the context of Omi and Winant's Racial Formation Theory. Focus groups were conducted with hospitality management and business students to investigate the above constructs in-depth. Questionnaires were administered to students enrolled in College of Businesses at 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities who were majoring in hospitality management or some aspect of business. The results of the focus groups indicated that the students are aware that their race may determine what jobs they are offered in the hospitality industry, how rapidly they will be promoted, how society views them as individuals, and how society views an entire race when that particular race is found in low level jobs in large numbers or perception of an industry, and the pay scale.
