Book Synopsis The Humane Gardener by : Nancy Lawson
Download or read book The Humane Gardener written by Nancy Lawson and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book excerpt: Through the pioneering efforts of ecologist B. W. Wells (1884-1978), thousands of North Carolinians learned to appreciate and protect the state's diverse plant life long before ecology and conservation became popular causes. A keen observer of the natural landscape, Wells provided the first scientific descriptions in modern terms of the forces that shaped coastal communities, bogs and savannahs, the Carolina bays, pine forests, old fields, and mountain grassy balds. But the broader impact of his life lay in his championship and popularization of nature. Outside academic circles, he shared his knowledge through public lectures, articles, and lobbying efforts, and by teaching anyone who would listen. In 1932 he produced for his Tar Heel audience a revolutionary work on the plant ecology of the state, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina. Organized by habitat, this volume is still entertaining and instructive. Wells received his Ph.D. in botany from the University of Chicago in 1917 and served as chair of the North Carolina State College botany department for thirty years. He was a memorable teacher and a significant force in the development of his academic institution.

Book Synopsis The Garden Bible by : Barbara Ballinger and Michael Glassman
Download or read book The Garden Bible written by Barbara Ballinger and Michael Glassman and published by Images Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transforming outdoor space is one of the hottest home trends today. Landscaping expands living space square footage, makes a property more usable, and keeps homeowners healthier whether they grow vegetables or swim laps. It also makes a neighborhood more aesthetically attractive and community minded. The Garden Bible can help homeowners understand the challenges of their outdoor space and what they need to do to create their garden and make it thrive. Photographed in rich full-color, this book will teach you how to develop a master plan for your yard. Many garden books explain how to grow specific flowers, care for shrubs, trees and lawn, and construct fences and hardscape. None take a homeowner from the beginning of the process: how to ask a professional the right questions, how to develop a budget, and how to identify and troubleshoot the challenges of their yard—drainage, erosion, privacy, noise, wind, too much or too little sun or shade. The Garden Bible will help you plan and problem solve so that your garden will grow, evolve, and be sustainable for years to come. Few books delve into landscaping style and cost-saving solutions as this insightful, beautifully illustrated book does. Barbara Ballinger, a well-known real estate, design and garden writer for more than four decades, and Michael Glassman, an award-winning landscape designer for over 35 years and author of seven books on landscape design and gardening, guide you through the process of designing your perfect garden. Showcasing the stories of how almost 30 home owners designed, budgeted and built their landscapes—The Garden Bible shows you that not only is a great garden beautiful to look at, but it’s also great for the soul.

Book Synopsis The Garden Club Gang by : Neal Sanders
Download or read book The Garden Club Gang written by Neal Sanders and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2011-02-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Committing the perfect crime was just the beginning of their problems. When Paula, Eleanor, Alice and Jean – women of a certain age – plotted to steal the daily cash gate from the Brookfield Fair, they thought they'd split about $125,000. They pulled off the robbery without a hitch, without injuring anyone and without witnesses. But when they counted the money, they found they had nearly half a million dollars, far more than the fair reported stolen. In a matter of hours, the Garden Club Gang would find themselves in a battle of wits with the local and state police, a determined insurance investigator and the criminals looking for their money. Instead of a lark, the four women found themselves in danger, and dependent upon their own resources – and an unexpected ally – to outwit both the law and the crooks determined to find the money and silence those who stole it. The Garden Club Gang offers finely drawn portraits of four women with all-too-credible motives for doing highly unladylike things. If you're expecting a 'cozy', then be prepared for a cozy with quite a kick. The characters are memorable, the action is non-stop and the plot twists until the final page.

The first book to focus specifically on attracting birds in both states, Attracting Birds in the Carolinas includes information on birds' basic needs and their annual reproduction and migration cycles, and provides helpful tips on how to modify your outdoor space to invite avian visitors. In addition to helpful information on attracting particular species, this guide offers practical advice for managing problem species—both avian, such as the European Starling and Mute Swan, and nonavian, such as squirrels and snakes.
