Book Synopsis There's No Place Like Home by : Peter Haworth
Download or read book There's No Place Like Home written by Peter Haworth and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in the series - Burnley FC, the Premier League Diaries. The book reviews Burnley FC's third attempt at Premier League survival as once again they go toe-to-toe with their far wealthier big city rivals. For a small East Lancashire town club to reach the money dominated Premier League was a feat considered extremely unlikely. However, in 2009 our homespun heroes achieved it, only to suffer the not unexpected subsequent relegation. Undeterred they battled back in 2014 achieving promotion as runners-up to Championship winners Leicester City. Now to fans of the club, if not a resolute management team, this was seen as incredible. Unfortunately, once again, the challenge proved beyond our heroes. Yet, once again in 2016, the indomitable Clarets shrugged off their disappointment and rose magnificently to claim a place in the top echelon of English football for a third time. This time bettering their previous promotions by emerging as worthy Championship winners. This diary tells the story of the third 'crack' at Premier League survival. Would the lessons learnt from the previous two campaigns stand them in good stead to this time withstand the overwhelming odds. Could they achieve the even greater goal of retaining their elevated status. What followed was a strange, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes deflating, but always compelling season of high drama. An extremely lop-sided series of results, giving rise ultimately to the book's title, ensured the outcome was likely to go to the wire.Once again it's a personal account of one man's 'take' on the challenge. As with the previous diaries the action is interspersed with tales of the author's other passion, walking in the northern hills and dales. The intention is to not only to document a memorable season, but hopefully also to amuse with some interesting anecdotes to lighten the mood!
Book Synopsis With Heads Held High by : Peter Haworth
Download or read book With Heads Held High written by Peter Haworth and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013/14 under the guidance of inspirational manager Sean Dyche, Burnley FC enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in their long history. Beaten on only five occasions in that Championship season, and finishing runners up with an impressive 93 points haul, they were promoted back to the Premier League for the second time in five years. This book is primarily a diary of that Premier League season, and the events leading up to it. Burnley FC, aka The Clarets, are the kind of team for whom the term 'underdog' could have been created. A small industrial town at the heart of Lancashire's once great cotton and mining industries, it boasts a football team with a proud history and a big heart! This is a story of the power of self belief and positive thinking. Would these admirable qualities be sufficient to overcome the overwhelming odds stacked against survival, or would the Clarets succumb to the gloomy predictions of all the so called 'experts'. It's a tale of joy, hope, happiness, sadness, desperation, and sometimes misery. It's a modern day battle of David, in the shape of plucky small town heroes, against Goliath in the guise of the big city clubs dripping with foreign cash. It's one man's personal view as he follows the unfolding story from unlikely Championship promotion contenders to runners up, and the subsequent challenge of the 'big boys' of the Premier League. Whilst of necessity featuring match reviews, it's not a blow-by-blow account of every minute of every game, the national and local press are far more adept at that. Hopefully it's a book that captures the fans emotions, from the euphoria of an unexpected victory, to the gut wrenching sickness of an unwarranted defeat. Written in a diary style it encompasses other facets of everyday life of the author, which he hopes will also amuse the not so committed football fanatic. It's therefore also a book about the pleasures of walking, companionship, friendly rivalry, and life after work. In some small part it's also a good pub and beer guide. The author has followed the Clarets since their glory days of the 1960's, through their descent to almost extinction in 1987. In his time as a fan he has seen his heroes crowned champions of all four divisions of English league football. Not many supporters of other clubs can claim that!... This is the second book in the series, 'Burnley FC - The Premier League Diaries', following the publication of 'A Season In The Sun' in 2010. Here's hoping it can become a long running series. Give it a try, you might want to come and join us!

Book Synopsis Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone by : Michael Bradley
Download or read book Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone written by Michael Bradley and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Bradley joined his school friend's group in Derry, Northern Ireland in the summer of 1974. They had two guitars and no singer. Four years later the Undertones recorded 'Teenage Kicks', John Peel's favourite record, and became one of the most fondly remembered UK bands of the post punk era. Sticking to their punk rock principles, they signed terrible deals, made great records and had a wonderful time. They broke up in 1983 when they realised there was no pot of gold at the end of the rock and roll rainbow. His story is a bitter-sweet, heart-warming and occasionally droll tale of unlikely success, petty feuding and playful mischief during five years of growing up in the music industry. Wiser but not much richer, Michael became a bicycle courier in Soho after the Undertones split. "Sixty miles a day, fresh air, no responsibilities," he writes. "Sometimes I think it was the best job I ever had. It wasn't, of course."

Book excerpt: Once they were portrayed as the salt of the earth. Nowadays, they take to the streets when paedophiles and asylum seekers are in their midst; they expose their lives in TV documentaries; they love Gucci and hate the Euro; the broadsheets cast them as xenophobes and exhibitionists and mock their tastes and attitudes. But who are the white working class and what have they done to deserve this portrayal? The Likes of Us is a fascinating and wholly original examination of London's white working class.
