In Western societies, many young people are expected to find their niche through college education or further vocational training and grow into healthy, independent, and contributing individuals. As a rite of passage, entering college is associated with separation from family and friends, transition to become independent and self-regulating, and integration into a new social and academic environment. Thus, college is characterized by both increased freedoms as well as heightened need to cope with new challenges in all areas of life. Unfortunately, there are numerous data sources that indicate that being a college student is stressful and the recent rise in mental health problems has been characterized as a crisis. When the normative developmental instability characteristic of emerging adulthood is paired with inadequate coping it provides a high-risk context for a wide range of negative consequences from poor adjustment to college, academic failure, substance abuse, to severe psychopathologies and disorders.The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the developmental and socioemotional factors impacting transition and adjustment to college and the potential of contemplative practices to enhance first year college students health and wellbeing during this time period. First, I theoretically analyzed the stress and coping processes during transition to college and proposed a conceptual model of how mindfulness and compassion skills may strengthen college students coping processes before, during, and after a challenging encounter. Second, I presented the post-test outcomes of a randomized controlled trial that aimed to evaluate the Learning to BREATHE (L2B) mindfulness-based intervention in a convenience sample of 109 first year college students. The pre-post results showed that, compared to the control group, students in the intervention reported a significant decrease in depression and anxiety symptoms and increase in life satisfaction. Furthermore, we found a marginally significant decrease in sleep issues and alcohol consequences. Third, I evaluated the 3-month follow-up data of the L2B intervention and examined hypothesized factors that might mediate the outcomes. The findings showed that the assignment to the mindfulness intervention was predictive of a decrease in distress and an increase in life satisfaction at the 3-month follow-up. Furthermore, the increase in reported mindfulness states mediated the outcome of distress, but not life satisfaction. The greater use of mindfulness practices mediated both distress and life satisfaction outcomes at follow-up. I concluded that mindfulness-based practices may positively impact both prevention of students mental health issues and promotion of their socioemotional competencies.Given the current issues with worldwide instabilities, 21st century education needs to be multifaceted, providing youth with the necessary cognitive and socioemotional skills to face the increasingly more complex and fast-paced world. For young adults to become engaged citizens of our global society, essential aspects of their education need to include the development of inner clarity, compassion, and self-awareness. Mindfulness and compassion practices and skills may offer a developmental resource for handling both daily hassles as well as major transitions and life events through the combined effect of paying attention, regulating thoughts and emotions, and utilizing effective coping tools. Creation of mindful and compassionate communities may be the next step in the broader contemplative agenda that will allow young people to practice inner clarity, socioemotional competencies, and the desire to work together for the greater wellbeing of all. I look forward to that hopeful future.

Book excerpt: Dramatic rises in levels of anxiety, stress, and depression in college students have been observed over the past decade and is so pervasive that it has been deemed the College Student Mental Health Crisis (CSMHC). A number of experts have argued that much of this crisis can be attributed to students' overall lack of basic knowledge of emotions and adaptive emotional processing. To address this problem, this study sought out to develop a brief mindfulness workshop as an intervention for college students to help increase student well-being, decrease anxious and depressive symptomology, and allow for material to be easily internalized. In this study, 67 total participants, all of whom were college students at James Madison University, completed a mindfulness workshop entitled, From Critical to CALM: A Guided Mindfulness Workshop. Stages of this study included the following: 1) Participant recruitment; 2) Conduct the pre-intervention assessment of participants using the Henriques-10 Well-Being Questionnaire (H10WB), the CORE Outcome Measure (CORE-OM), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale; 3) Conduct the workshop; 4) directly after each workshop, administer a brief "Quiz" to assess the knowledge participants obtained as well as a satisfaction survey; and 5) Conduct the post-intervention assessment of all remaining participants using the same pre-intervention measures along with one qualitative question asking participants to indicate what concept(s)/idea(s) from the workshop they remember learning. Students' satisfaction of the workshop overall was high and the vast majority of them reported that they would likely use the workshop's strategies in the future. Two to three weeks after the workshop, students also retained at least some of the key knowledge elements from the workshop. Test-retest results for this study found statistically signficant change in students' well-being, as indicated by the H10WB. A positive trend on the GAD was also found, but there was no change found on the CORE-OM. Due to the limitations of this study, the results are not able to be effectively interpreted to determine causation. However, given the nature and brief time of the intervention, these results were deemed as encouraging. Further development of the workshop and adjustments to the study will need to be performed to determine if, indeed, the workshop may have succeeded in initiating improvement in well-being, potentially through facilitating mindful awareness of intrapsychic process.

Fifty Western Washington University first-year students (75.7% white, 13.5% Hispanic or Latinx, 12.2% Asian, 4.1% Black, 1.4% Native American or Alaska Native, and 9.5% multiracial) participated. Students were randomly assigned to one of the two trainings and were measured pre- and post- training on psychosocial skills (mindfulness, social support, emotion regulation) and indicators of adjustment (psychological distress, perceived stress). Neither training group showed significant changes regarding psychosocial skills, psychological distress, or perceived stress. These null findings showcase important considerations when designing trainings to improve psychosocial skills in hopes of promoting positive adjustment for first-year college students.

Book excerpt: The majority of college students will experience a traumatic event either before or during college, and a significant subset of those students experience PTSD symptoms. Additionally, many college students engage in problematic alcohol use. There is evidence that individuals with co-occurring PTSD symptoms and alcohol and other substance use disorders often use substances in an attempt to reduce their PTSD symptoms, and college students with PTSD symptoms experience more negative alcohol and drug consequences than those without PTSD. The relationship between PTSD and alcohol and other substance use disorders is often cyclical: individuals use substances to cope with PTSD symptoms, which in turn exacerbate symptoms and make them vulnerable to further traumatic experiences. Mindfulness interventions have been successfully utilized for individuals with PTSD or substance use disorders. However, to date, no previous studies have evaluated treatments for college students with co-occurring PTSD symptoms and problem drinking. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a 4-week group loving-kindness meditation (LKM) compared to referral to treatment as usual (RTAU) for college students with PTSD symptoms and problem drinking. Seventy-six college students participated in the current study. Overall, the LKM group was feasible and acceptable to college students, although recruitment of eligible students into the study was lower than expected and attendance at LKM groups was modest. Participants’ PTSD symptoms, drinking quantity, and negative drinking consequences decreased over the course of the study, although there was no significant differences between the LKM and RTAU conditions on these outcomes. Additionally, higher coping drinking motives predicted greater PTSD symptoms and more drinking consequences, highlighting the need for early effective intervention for individuals who drink to cope with their PTSD symptoms.

This is evident in time-consuming academic responsibilities overlapping with family life, work duties, and personal life. Stress can have negative impacts on academic performance and physical health in college students , and it has been correlated with various negative outcomes including anxiety and depression (Segrin,1999), increases in headaches (Labbe, Murphy & O'Brien, 1997), increased rates of athletic injury (Brewer & Petrie, 1996), suicidal ideation and hopelessness (Dixon, Rumford, Heppner, & Lipps, 1992), sleep disturbances (Verlander, Benedict, & Hanson, 1999), poor health behaviors (Sadava & Pak, 1993; Naquin & Gilbert, 1996), and the common cold (Stone, Bovbjerg, Neale, et al.). The focus of the current study was to investigate mindfulness as a way to help college students to cope with on-going stress specifically through its impact on increasing hope related to coping with a current life stressor. Mindfulness is an openness to perceiving one's present environment in a non- judgmental way with openness and flexibility (Compton & Hoffman, 2013; Bergen-Cico, Possemato, & Cheon, 2013). It allows one to be more fully aware of present moment situations, open to new outlooks and points of view, and it facilitates more knowledge and pathways to goal attainment (Compton & Hoffman, 2013). For the current study, it was hypothesized that a brief mindfulness meditation intervention would increase coping-related hopefulness in a group of college students compared to a mind-wandering intervention. Forty-two undergraduate college students from the University of Southern Mississippi completed measures of stress and hope and identified a current stressor in their life to focus on when responding to the hope scale. The mean differences in hope change across the mindfulness and mind-wandering groups were computed, and the results indicated the average hope increase for the mindfulness meditation group was not statistically significant from the average hope increase for the mind-wandering group. The participants were further divided into a high stress group (above the mean) and a low stress group (below the mean). Within the low stress group, the average hope increase for the mindfulness group was 2.08 (SD=4.01), and the average hope increase for the mind-wandering group was 2.0 (SD=3.42). Within the high stress group, the average hope increase for the mindfulness group was 3.7 (SD=3.37), and the average hope increase for the mind-wandering group was 2.4 (SD=3.63). The t-test indicated that the results were not statistically significant. However, the high stress group showed a greater increase in hope in the mindfulness group. Although not statistically significant, the results suggest a possible trend for increases in positive cognitions related to coping with stress in the mindfulness meditation group relative to the mind-wandering group, for the participants reporting higher than average numbers of life stressors. Future research should consider testing the same procedure with a larger sample of high-stress individuals in order to increase statistical power. --Page [iv].

Mindfulness has shown to have positive benefits on both physical and mental health. College students are exposed to stressors on a daily basis, and often utilize unhealthy or unproductive coping strategies. Little is known about the effectiveness of a brief, in-class mindfulness training program for college students. This study incorporated several mindfulness techniques into a training series designed for undergraduate college students. Changes in the Perceived Stress Scale and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale were analyzed and compared between a control group and training group. Based on prior research, it was hypothesized that four brief mindfulness sessions would reduce self-reported stress and increase mindful qualities in participants. Also, it was hypothesized that larger doses of mindfulness, which included both in-class training and out-of-class practice, would produce lower perceived stress levels and higher mindful qualities. No significant differences were found between the training and control groups for either measure, however the training group itself saw significant decreases in perceived stress post-training, and significant increases in both amount of mindfulness practice and familiarity of mindfulness. In future research, distinct control groups and more participants are needed to assess for training effects.

This exploratory study examined students’ experiences in a four-week online mindfulness program. Four brief mindfulness-based practices were introduced: breathing and movement meditation, mindful eating, body scan, and loving-kindness meditation. Fourteen participants completed online questionnaires to explore their experiences of mindfulness and how this intervention impacted their well-being. Results of thematic analyses suggest that there were variations in participants’ experiences and participants’ preferred mindfulness sessions. The sample consisted of 14 participants. Seven participants withdrew from the study while seven participants persisted throughout the intervention. Twelve participants reported beneficial outcomes. Findings suggest that the participants who completed the intervention reported an improvement in their ability to cope with stress, negative emotions and increased their self-awareness. These findings are congruent with those of other online interventions, and the intervention served as an effective foundation for exposing students to mindfulness. This study has implications for cost-effective mental health care delivery, given the current shortages in resources on university campuses and in communities throughout Canada.

Book excerpt: College students experience a considerable amount of stress. Unmanaged stress is associated with poor academic performance, health risk behaviors (i.e., inadequate sleep and physical activity, alcohol consumption, poor dietary behaviors), and poor mental health. Coping with stress has become a priority among universities. The most tested stress-related programs to date have been mindfulness-based and face-to-face. These programs demonstrated significant improvements in stress, mindfulness, and self-compassion among college students. However, they may be burdensome to students as studies report low attendance and low compliance due to class conflicts or not enough time. Few interventions have used more advanced technologies (i.e., mobile apps) as a mode of delivery. The purpose of this study is to report adherence to a consumer-based mindfulness meditation mobile application (i.e., Calm) and test its effects on stress, mindfulness, and self-compassion in college students. We will also explore what the relationship is between mindfulness and health behaviors. College students were recruited using fliers on college campus and social media. Eligible participants were randomized to one of two groups: (1) Intervention - meditate using Calm, 10 min/day for eight weeks and (2) Control - no participation in mindfulness practices (received the Calm application after 12-weeks). Stress, mindfulness, and self-compassion and health behaviors (i.e., sleep disturbance, alcohol consumption, physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption) were measured using self-report. Outcomes were measured at baseline and week eight. Of the 109 students that enrolled in the study, 41 intervention and 47 control participants were included in analysis. Weekly meditation participation averaged 38 minutes with 54% of participants completing at least half (i.e., 30 minutes) of meditations. Mindfulness & Wide-Awakeness in Higher Education draws upon Greene's work to explore the voices and experiences of college students who engaged in mindfulness practices during every class session in a cohort over an academic year and others who participated in a mindfulness group that met weekly for a year.
