Book excerpt: Singing Brass provides developing, amateur, and advanced players with practicing materials that--when played with clear artistic intentions and expressive nuances--facilitate playing with a beautiful tone. The author selected singing-like melodies to encourage players to play with their most refined musicianship. Players should perform these melodies with a round and resonant tone--similar to that of great bel canto singers--while striving to play one perfect note after the other. To achieve this, players can visualize mental images--such as making each note part of a perfect string of pearls or a string of shinning light bulbs. Players should play the melodies in this book with expressive crescendos and decrescendos. Within those crescendos and decrescendos, players ahould maintin a pure tone by supplying a healthy air support--resulting from a vital and continuos air stream. The author arranged the melodies in this book to fit the trumpet register and technique. For example, in some cases, the author subtracted passages that did not seem conducive to improving tone production or would avoid unnecessarily strain. Developing players, amateurs, and professionals are equally encouraged to listen to these melodies in their original form--be it orchestral, chamber, or solo--while seeking the best recorded or live artistic interpretations among the many wonderful options available. Each melody represents a story waiting to come to life. Players should research each melody to learn its history and purpose. While in this process of discovery, players might derive their own interpretation. This book represents a much needed addition to the trumpet literature by offering a series of melodies that range from simple traditional melodies to complex opera arias. Each melody--when played correctly--will increase the player's phrasing skills--as well as increasing his technical abilities in tone production and dynamic control. This book is divided into two sections. In the first section, the author wrote 70 drills and vocalises intended to develop and maintain basic brass playing techniques. The second section includes 71 melodies arranged in a progressive order of difficulty--both technically and artistically.

Book excerpt: Late nineteenth-century France was a nation undergoing an identity crisis: the uncertain infancy of the Third Republic and shifting alliances in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War forced France to interrogate the fundamental values and characteristics at the heart of its own national identity. Music was central to this national self-scrutiny. It comes as little surprise to us that Oriental fears, desires, and anxieties should be a fundamental part of this, but what has been overlooked to date is that Britain, too, provided a thinking space in the French musical world; it was often – surprisingly and paradoxically – represented through many of the same racialist terms and musical tropes as the Orient. However, at the same time, its shared history with France and the explosions of colonial rivalry between the two nations introduced an ever-present tension into this musical relationship. This book sheds light on this forgotten musical sphere through a rich variety of contemporary sources. It visits the café-concert and its tradition of ‘Englishing up’ with fake hair, mocking accents, and unflattering dances; it explores the reactions, both musical and physical, to British evangelical bands as they arrived in the streets of France and the colonies; it considers the French reception of, and fascination with, folk music from Ireland and Scotland; and it confronts the culture shock felt by French visitors to Britain as they witnessed British music-making for the first time. Until now, however, no full account has been made of the central role of the arts in their program. In this skillful interdisciplinary study, Ralph P. Locke describes and documents the Saint-Simonians' view of music as an ideological tool and the influence of this view on musical figures of the day. The disciples of Claude Henri de Rouvroy, comte de Saint-Simon, believed that increased industrial production would play a crucial role in improving the condition of the working masses and in shifting power from the aristocratic "drones" to the enterprising men of talent then rising in the French middle class. As a powerful means of winning support for their views, music became an integral part of the Saint-Simonians' writings and ceremonial activities. Among the musicians Locke discusses are Berlioz, Liszt, and Mendelssohn, whose tangential association with the Saint-Simonians reveals new aspects of their social and aesthetic views. Other musicians became the Saint-Simonians' faithful followers, among them Jules Vinçard, Dominique Tajan-Rogé, and particularly Félicien David, the movement's principal composer. Many of these composers' works, reconstructed by Locke from authentic sources, are printed here, including the "Premier Chant des industriels," written at Saint-Simon's request by Rouget de Lisle, composer of the "Marseillaise."
