Quintet no. 3.$22.00Henri Brod (1799-1839) was a French oboist, instrument-maker, and composer active throughout the early nineteenth century. He studied oboe under Gustave Vogt at the Paris Conservatory, ultimately becoming teacher there himself in 1832. He also played second oboe next to Vogt at the Paris Opéra, where Fétis found Brod¿s tone sweeter than that of his teacher. Brod became interested in the construction of the oboe and was perhaps the first builder to add octave keys to the instrument. His Méthode pour le hautbois (Paris, 1835-36) provides valuable technical information concerning the oboe and remains a useful resource for modern players. Brod¿s three woodwind quintets most likely date from the second decade of the nineteenth century and were printed by two separate publishers, Pacini and Schonenberger, both of Paris. All three quintets feature a four-movement format: a longer first movement in sonata form, a slow movement, a minuet, and a quick-tempo finale. As a whole, the quintets form a nice complement to those of Danzi, Reicha, and somewhat later, Franz Lachner. Brod remains the only actual woodwind player among these early composers of wind quintets. While not very well known today, Brod¿s contributions to the wind quintet literature are significant and worthy of greater attention; this is particularly true in view of the paucity of wind quintets throughout the nineteenth century. It is to be hoped that through this critical edition, Brod¿s importance to the early development of the wind quintet will be recognized and his beautiful works heard more often..ContentsWoodwind Quintet No. 1 in E-flat Major[I] Introduction: Adagio; Allegro vivace[II] Andante[III] Minuetto: Allegro[IV] PrestoWoodwind Quintet No. 2 in F Major[I] Introduction: Lento; Allegro[II] Andante[III] Minuetto[IV] Finale: PrestoWoodwind Quintet No. 3 in C Major[I] Allegretto[II] Andante non troppo[III] Minuetto: Allegro[IV] Allegro

He covers composers from around the world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Included in the book is biographical information; commission, duration, instrumentation, date of publication, premiere, publisher, discography for each piece; bibliographical sources; and an index which groups the music by numbers, medium, and ensemble. This is the fourth volume in Aaron Horne's monumental effort to provide the most comprehensive guide to music composed by black composers. In this volume he covers composers from around the world in the 19th and 20th centuries, including William Grant Still, Ulysses Kay, Anthony Davis, John Coltrane, and other major figures from the world of classical, jazz, and popular music. The main body of the book is divided into sections devoted to African, African American, Afro-European, and Afro-Latino composers. Within each section composers are arranged alphabetically; each entry provides biographical information as well as commission, duration, instrumentation, date of publication, premiere, publisher, discography for each composition. Backmatter includes a Brass Music Index which groups the music by numbers, medium, and ensembles; a title index; discography; and bibliography. As with the earlier volumes, this is an essential reference tool for anyone with an interest in researching and/or performing the music of black composers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wonderful"--The New York Times. "Provocative, opinionated, and never dull"--Down Beat. "A singular book."--Studs Terkel. When it was first published, Alec Wilder's American Popular Song quickly became a classic and today it remains essential reading for countless musicians, lovers of American Song, and fans of Alec Wilder. Now, in a 50th anniversary edition, popular music scholar Robert Rawlins brings the book fully up-to-date for the 21st century. Whereas previous editions featured only piano scores, the format has been changed to lead sheet notation with lyrics, making it accessible to a wider readership. Rawlins has also added more than sixty music examples to help complete the chapter on Irving Berlin. One of the most fascinating features of the original edition was Wilder's inventive use of language, often revealing his strong and sometimes irreverent opinions. Wilder's prose remains relatively unaltered, but footnotes have been provided that clarify, elucidate, and even correct. Moreover, a new chapter has been added, discussing fifty-three songs by numerous composers that Wilder might have well included but was not able to. Songs by Ann Ronnell, Fats Waller, Jule Styne and many others are capped off with an examination of ten of Wilder's own songs.
