Book excerpt: The elders in Jamaica sometimes use phrases or sentences they believe reflect a situation, or serve to caution the younger generation or old, unaware individuals. Many of these phrases or sentences may be used as words of inspiration and often allow for introspection and generate changes through behavioral modification. These are adages inherently uttered in the Jamaican dialect, some of which have been included and translated here into standard English by the author. This ensures a sense of clarity for non-Jamaicans and Jamaicans who aren’t as familiar to the indigenous dialect. The author’s main aim is to reach persons who are not Jamaicans, who would love to understand the meaning of words uttered in the Jamaican dialect, patois. The author also aims to facilitate inspiration, “social cautions,” and self-evaluation through each page of this book, with images included that somewhat reflect the message of each proverb. As such, the English version of each proverb is included, along with the proverb’s meaning. The images included should enhance clarity, especially for non-Jamaicans. The lyrics of the Jamaican National Anthem and Pledge have also been included to extend an understanding of the Jamaican culture and indicate what may be considered Jamaicanism. As a Jamaican, the author would like to operationally define Jamaicanism as the total quality management (TQM) of the Jamaican culture to present the best—as there is only the best—to the outside world, wrapped in the reality of diversity “out of many one people” (the Jamaican motto). The author’s interaction with people from other cultures exposed the sincere interest that others have in the language and subsequent accent of the Jamaican people. This fact is one of the inspirations for this book, as people from other cultures often prompt continuous utterance of the Jamaican dialect to indulge their ears in the melody of the English language in Jamaican tone. In addition, it is important for these proverbs to be used as empowerment, as cautionary sayings, and guiding tools for readers. With that in mind, a blank page is provided after each proverb to facilitate personal reflection and empowerment. The author would like readers to take away the message of caution and become empowered through proverbs and expressions of the elders. The book’s main idea is to convey the linguistic cultural awareness of the Jamaican people to the rest of the world and offer the elements of this awareness as empowerment, caution, and therapy to the Jamaican people and others around the world. It is suggested that this book would be an excellent gift for friends, employees, family, and associates outside Jamaica, or citizens and residents of other nations who are living in Jamaica. It is also a book for all Jamaicans, as it can impact morals and ensure cautions for life. It is important to use these proverbs in a therapeutic way, as they have benefits beyond semantics

Book excerpt: A dazzling collection of original essays by some of America's most notable young writers on the cultural impact of the Star Wars films A Galaxy Not So Far Away is the first ever exploration of the innumerable ways the Star Wars films have forever altered our cultural and artistic landscape. Edited by Glenn Kenny, a senior editor and critic at Premiere magazine, this singular collection allows some of the nation's most acclaimed writers to anatomize, criticize, celebrate, and sometimes simply riff on the prismatic aftereffects of an unparalleled American phenomenon. Jonathan Lethem writes of the summer he saw Star Wars twenty-one times as his mother lay dying of cancer. Neal Pollack chips in with the putative memoir of a certain young man having problems with his father, written in the voice of Holden Caulfield. Erika Krouse ponders the code of the Jedi Knight and its relation to her own pursuit of the martial arts. New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell meditates upon the mysterious figure Lando Calrissian. A classic assemblage of pop writing at its best, A Galaxy Not So Far Away is a book for everyone who loves Star Wars films and seeks to understand just what it is about these films that has so enchanted an entire generation of filmgoers.

Book excerpt: Thirteen-year-old Natalie Gallagher is trying to escape: from her parents' ugly divorce, and from the vicious cyber-bullying of her former best friend. Adrift, confused, she is a girl trying to find her way in a world that seems to either neglect or despise her. Her salvation arrives in an unlikely form: Bridget O'Connell, an Irish maid working for a wealthy Boston family. The catch? Bridget lives only in the pages of a dusty old 1920s diary Natalie unearthed in her mother's basement. But the life she describes is as troubling -- and mysterious -- as the one Natalie is trying to navigate herself, almost a century later. I am writing this down because this is my story. There were only ever two people who knew my secret, and both are gone before me. Who was Bridget, and what became of her? Natalie escapes into the diary, eager to unlock its secrets, and reluctantly accepts the help of library archivist Kathleen Lynch, a widow with her own painful secret: she's estranged from her only daughter. Kathleen sees in Natalie traces of the daughter she has lost, and in Bridget, another spirited young woman at risk. What could an Irish immigrant domestic servant from the 1920s teach them both? As the troubles of a very modern world close in around them, and Natalie's torments at school escalate, the faded pages of Bridget's journal unite the lonely girl and the unhappy widow . . . and might even change their lives forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine Hartmann's mother valued control above all else, yet one event appeared beyond her command: the timing of her own death. Not to be denied there either, two decades in advance Irmgard Hartmann chose the date on which to end her life. And her next step was to tell her daughter all about it. For twenty years, Irmgard maintained an unwavering goal, to commit suicide at age seventy. She managed her chronic hypertension, stayed healthy and active, and lived life to the fullest. Meanwhile, Christine fought desperately against the decision. When Irmgard wouldn't listen, the only way to remain part of her life was for Christine to swallow her mother's plans--hook, line, and sinker. Christine's father, as it turned out, prepared too slowly for old age. Before he had made any decision, fate disabled him through a series of strokes. Confined to a nursing home, severely impaired by dementia and frustrated by his circumstances, his life epitomized the predicament her mother wanted to avoid. So Far Away gives us an intimate view of a person interacting with and reacting to her parents at the ends of their lives. In a richly detailed, poignant story of family members' separate yet interwoven journeys, it underscores the complexities and opportunities that life presents each one of us.

Book excerpt: A fictional diary set in interwar Germany and Spain allows us to peek into the life of Klara Philipsborn, the only Communist in her merchant-class, German-Jewish family. Klara’s first visit to Seville in 1925 opens her eyes and her spirit to an era in which Spain’s major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, shared deep cultural connections. At the same time, she is made aware of the harsh injustices that persist in Spanish society. By 1930, she has landed a position with the medical school in Madrid. Though she feels compelled to hide her Jewish identity in her predominantly Christian new home, she finds that she feels less “different” in Spain than she did in Germany, especially as she learns new ways of expressing her opinions and desires. And when the Spanish Civil War erupts in 1936, Klara (now “Clara”) enlists in the Fifth Regiment, a step that transports her across the geography of the embattled peninsula and ultimately endangers a promising relationship and even Clara’s life itself. A blending of thoroughly researched history and engrossing fiction, Home So Far Away is an epic tale that will sweep readers away.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ashlyn Lark was a young woman driven by her quest for romance and true love. Her expectations led her down a lonely path of pain and disappointment. When tragedy struck amid the existing turmoil, her fragile heart was shattered. Through Gods power and grace, she found the strength to pick up the pieces and move on. She continued on a journey of faith as Gods love and light illuminated the way. Each step was a lesson learned and a challenge to put her trust in the Masters plan. Understand that challenges are stepping stones that can draw us closer to the heart of God. Persevere and have faith in trials and suffering. Learn to wait for Gods timing. Beware of the consequences of your own choices. There is life after the death of a child. Know that Gods presence and peace can sustain you through any circumstance. In a time when there is so much pain and woundedness in our culture, Ashlyn Lark, in her book, Paradise Seems So Far Away, has presented her life story with creativity and a perspective that points to the only answer, a loving God. Into a description of her circumstances, she weaves her own poetry and songs that express so well her heart's journey. I feel that other women who are experiencing difficult situations in their own lives, will be encouraged by Ashlyn's honest words, her creativity, but most especially her presentation of her loving Father, Who promises to "never leave you or for sake you" (Hebrews 13:5) and Who "... is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble" (Psalm 46:1). What could be more uplifting and comforting to know that our God is in control of our lives, even in the darkest times! Rosemary Barnes, author and speaker

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Hadley Dyer’s YA debut is smart, snarky, and emotionally gripping, about a rebellious cop’s daughter who falls in love with an older man, loses her best friend, and battles depression, all while trying to survive her last year of high school. Feisty and fearless George Warren (given name: Frances, but no one calls her that) has never let life get too serious. Now that she’s about to be a senior, her plans include partying with her tight-knit group of friends and then getting the heck out of town after graduation. But instead of owning her last year of high school, a fight with her best friend puts her on the outs of their social circle. If that weren’t bad enough, George’s family has been facing hard times since her father, a police sergeant, got injured and might not be able to return to work, which puts George’s college plans in jeopardy. So when George meets Francis, an older guy who shares her name and her affinity for sarcastic banter, she’s thrown. If she lets herself, she’ll fall recklessly, hopelessly in love. But because of Francis’s age, she tells no one—and ends up losing almost everything, including herself. This is a gorgeous, atmospheric, and gut-wrenching novel that readers won’t soon forget.

The novel deals with the repercussions of this tragedy: the anguish, regret, despair and bittersweet romance. Typical of Brautigan's singular style, So the Wind Won't Blow it all Away is a beautifully written, brooding novel. Its autobiographical prose is a fitting epitaph to this complex, contradictory and often misunderstood writer.

This can be your story When your parents, friends, or partner tell you what you should or should not do to "get better," do you think, "They just don't get it"? Melissa Groman gets it. As a therapist, she has spent twenty-five years helping young women who binge, starve, and physically harm themselves to heal and recover. In Better Is Not So Far Away, she combines her experience, wisdom, and compassion to help you see beyond your behavior, discover who you really are, and decide to change your life. You might know that obsession, disordered eating, and self-harm won't ultimately make you feel better--but you haven't been able to stop. Bridging the gap between what you feel and what you do, Groman explores raw emotional pain with a deep knowledge of the human psyche, including stories of those who have suffered, faced, and conquered self-destructive urges. "A life well-lived means more than just a lessening of symptoms," Groman writes. "It means a true shift in how you think and how you tend to your own feelings and the feelings of others." Dealing with family, friendships, emotions, and life itself--as well as food and body issues--can be complex and can get in the way of even wanting to recover. When you clear away some of the emotional obstacles, it's easier to take practical steps to genuine relief and healing. This book will help you do just that. It can be the first or next right step toward facing your greatest hurts and challenges in a practical, profoundly honest, and self-caring way. A healthy, happy life may seem impossible now--but, truly, it is not so far away.
