Senior library managers, systems librarians, and library educators with a special interest in automation analyze the changes in the workplace that have already occurred and discuss those that will confront library professionals in the future. Personnel Administration in an Automated Environment covers the latest issues and research on the topic. Among the subjects dealt with are education and compensation of automation librarians, the nature of jobs in an automated library, the opportunities for innovation and change in technical library jobs, new personnel issues as a result of automating users’services, changing staff requirements in mid-sized academic libraries, the intersection of library and computer center tasks, and the impact of computerization on job satisfaction and performance evaluation. Administrators, personnel officers, and department heads in mid-sized to large libraries with computer-based operations will find both research-based results and reasonable speculation on everyday problems. A bibliography of the most recent books and articles will be useful to scholars of the subject.

Book excerpt: Academic Library Metamorphosis and Regeneration continues the discussions around change and transformation that are taking place in the library profession today. Academic libraries are undergoing change at a remarkable rate and have been through transitions that were unthinkable before disruptive technology changed everything. For academic libraries, changes in higher education, scholarly communication, and user expectations are driving a continuous need to adjust, transform, and re-create ourselves. This book explores the changes that led us to where we are today, reviews academic libraries that have transformed, and offers suggestions for those who are beginning a change process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Computer Interaction (HCI) has its roots in the main areas of industrial engineering, human factors and cognitive psychology with the focus on the development of user-friendly IT. Traditionally, the research in this area has emphasised the technological aspect of this relationship (the Computer). More recently, other aspects concerning the organizational, social and human context also began to be considered (the Human). Today, one can say that any attempt to facilitate the relationship between the machine and the user must consider not only the technological perspective (e.g., promote the usability) but also, for instance, the way the user is going to use the technology and his or her purpose as well as the social and cultural context of this use (the Human and the Computer).

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1995, describes how automation is changing the face of acquisitions as librarians know it and making the future uncertain yet exciting. It documents how libraries have increasingly moved to powerful, second-generation interfaceable or integrated systems that can control all aspects of library operations. The libraries presented as examples show that increasing user expectations, the siren call of cyberspace and network connectivity, and administrative faith in the savings to be obtained from electronic technical services continue to drive the migration to higher-level library management systems.

Busch and published by Washington, D.C. : Office of Management Studies, Association of Research Libraries. This book was released on 1986 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores current trends and practices in functional integration based on site visits to six Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries selected on the basis of their responses to a Fall 1984 ARL questionnaire. The responses indicated that, for all six libraries, some integration of functions existed, staff reorganization was underway or complete, cataloging was taking place in public areas, and professional librarians were participating in both public and technical services functions. The current situation of the six libraries and their decisions to reorganize are summarized, and the following developments and issues are considered: (1) collection management and service to users; (2) impact of automation; (3) organizational climate; (4) flexible use of staff; (5) staff morale; (6) reporting relationships; and (7) recruitment and training. Increased information delivery and an expansion outward in client-centered groupings are identified as possible future trends for public service areas, along with the continuing compression of massive technical services departments, and it is concluded that leadership and staff participation, as well as a clear sense of where the institution is going, are vital ingredients in successful organizational change. Notes and a 61-item selected bibliography are provided, and a listing of the issues addressed is appended. (KM)
