Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Autobiography of a Repaired Physician : Mental Health as Seen from Both Sides of the Desk is a trilogy. Book I deals with my life before, during and after the emergence of an attack of bipolar disorder. The shattering consequences of the disorder and the personal history that precede it are discussed in great clinical and personal detail. My chief concern is that the reader comprehend how the past, present, and future come into play in understanding the outcome in the treatment of this destructive and deadly disease. Book II concerns the social stigma associated with having a history of the disorder and the many pitfalls clinically, psychologically and socially that exist for an individual, such as myself who is charged with the professional responsibility of caring for people suffering from similar affl ictions. Book III is about my adventures in the real world as I have seen it. It relates to the madness of our world in which the ever present and infuriating search for power prestige and possessions appear unfortunately to be the primary determinants of behavior in our society. Many of my closest friends have tried to dissuade me from writing about this issue because they feared I would be exposing myself to further social stigma. I feel strongly that those who have suffered from the destructive effects of the spectrum of bipolar disorder must know how treatment works and what pitfalls to avoid in treatment. As a physician it is my duty to heal myself and with the help of some very talented colleagues. I have been able to do just that. My struggle continues and in that sense more books will be written. I would like to especially acknowledge the help of my wife Barbara, who has stuck with me through thick and thin, and my children Miranda, Alexander and Victoria who love each other and me.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Life and Work In offering to the Profession and to the Public these memoranda of the life and labours of a hard-working physician, extending over a period of upwards of sixty years, I think that I am performing a duty, incumbent on all, to make known experiences, which have been neither few nor unsuccessful, in relation to the science and art of Medicine, and may not prove uninteresting in regard to its history. But I feel that some apology is due for the long delay which has postponed the publication to so late a period of my life. My excuse must be the state of my health. The narrative will show how a constitution, never robust, yet endowed with great activity of mind and body, suffered at times from overwork, especially during the ten years' tenure of the Professorship at University College, and that in the busy life which followed, there was no sufficient recovery from that overstrain, to enable me to fulfil the literary engagements which pressed upon me. Works called for and undertaken, for which materials had been long accumulating, were not completed; editions out of print were unrenewed; and during a period of upwards of twenty years, all available time and strength were devoted to the cares and responsibilities of a large consulting practice. One work I was enabled to produce, through the welcome assistance of my son Dr. Charles Theodore Williams. I allude to that on 'Pulmonary Consumption, ' noticed in Chap. XXXVII. It also has been for some time out of print. At the time of my retirement, nine years ago, I was too much wearied and worn to attempt any great work. But the rest and refreshment which God has vouchsafed to me during the interval, encouraged me a year ago to commence these Memoirs, which, through His continued mercy, I have been enabled so far to complete. It does not matter whether it was really a man or a woman. The complete exhaustion of supreme nerve centres as in this case rarely befalls a woman. So far as the fulfillment of professional duties, the achievement of a definite purpose with this tremendous handicap is concerned, it was done. The physician whose story is told, and also the physician in attendance both knew from their own experience the worst of this condition without a pathology, but which evidences a definite pathological physiology. Never for one moment did either the one or the other abate their interest in their professional work, nor their manifold duties in relation to life. The physician in attendance did not know from his own experience the anguish of pain, inability and all it meant to keep up courage and activity until after fully eight years of attendance upon the patient whose biography is recorded. There had been premonitions as early as at the time of his patients complete break. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Andrew T. Still I will inform the reader at the outset that this book is written to state facts, without being confined to exact dates and figures. Events that have made lasting impressions on my mind, stated as correctly as possible from memory, are narrated here without regard to the rules of fine writing. I never kept any notes of my life, therefore the stories may appear disconnected. When I tell you of an event it will be the truth as I remember it, regardless of how it may look in print. I want to avoid "biography" as I write, for the reason that "biographies" are so nicely worded that the reader often has to ask whom the narrator "is giving a write-up." Notwithstanding I am often told that I ought to get a professional "biographer" to write my life, I have concluded to write it myself. When I read about the battles of the Rebellion, "How Major A. T. Still charged on rebels with uplifted saber, urging his men to victory," I begin to doubt professional biographers, for I know there was not a saber drawn nor was there any yelling during a hard fight of two hours' duration between thirty thousand combatants on each side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Medical Biography, or Memoirs of Eminent Physicians Who Have Flourished in America: To Which Is Prefixed a Succinct History of Medical Science in the United States, From the First Settlement of the Country Among the various sciences and literary pursuits of life, there is no one more pre-eminently important than that which is empha tically styled the healing art that which restores health, and brings comfort and joy to suffering humanity. It is an inestimable blessing, bestowed in mercy, to counterpoise the frail condition of our nature, and to meliorate or remedy the miseries which result from the indulgence of our vicious propensities. It assuages the anguish of corporeal disease, and soothes that keen mental distress which overwhelms the faculties of the soul. When we contem plate the condition of the inhabitants of the earth' in the primitive ages of the world, we are struck with the formidable embarrass ments which they were doomed to encounter. Unacquainted with the means of fortifying themselves against the numerous evils of life, they were continually exposed to casualties and disease, and at the same time destitute of such assistance as would afford the desired relief. Ignorant of the structure of the human frame, and of the laws of the animal economy, no rational method of cure could be devised, and their medical knowledge could consist only of an incongruous mixture of superstition and absurdities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Labrador Doctor: The Autobiography of Wilfred Thomason Grenfell I have long been resisting the strong pressure from friends that would force me to risk having to live along side my own autobiography. It seems still an open ques tion whether it is advisable, or even whether it is right seeing that it calls for confessions. In the eyes of God the only alternative is a book of lies. Moreover, sitting down to write one's own life story has always loomed up before my imagination as an admission that one was passing the post which marks the last lap; and though it was a justly celebrated physician who told us that we might profitably crawl upon the shelf at half a century, that added no attraction for me to the effort, when I passed that goal. Thirty-two years spent in work for deep-sea fishermen, twenty-seven of which years have been passed in Labra dor and northern Newfoundland, have-necessarily given me some experiences which may be helpful to others. I feel that this alone justifies the writing of this story. To the many helpers who have cooperated with me at one time or another throughout these years, I owe a debt of gratitude which will never be forgotten, though it has been impossible to mention each one by name. Without them this work could never have been. To my wife, who was willing to leave all the best the civilized world can offer to share my life on this lonely a coast, I want to dedicate this book. Truth forces me to own that it would never have come into being without her, and her greater share in the work of its production declares her courage to face the consequences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mysteries of Montreal: Being Recollections of a Female Physician During a long practice of over thirty years I have seen many things enacted here in this city of Montreal which, if told with the skill of a. Dumas or a Collins, might not only astonish but startle the sedate residents of this Church going community. I have often, while waiting for the advent of a little midnight visitor, beguiled the weary hours with a narrative of some of my experiences, and have been amused at the expression on the faces of my fair patients when told that my memory, and not my imagin ation, had been drawn upon for materials. Enquiry hav ing frequently been made as to whether my recollections were published, I have been induced to print this volume, changing only names of persons and localities, so as to avoid identification. Many persons will find it hard to believe some of the occurrences which are herein mentioned, but those who have been concerned (directly or indirectly) with any of the parties to my narratives, will recognize, under the disguise of a false name, some person with whose history they are familiar. Should any discover his own actions here narrated, let him not think that I have wantonly endeavored to Open old sores, but rather to warn others from taking that first false step which so often leads to future misery and bitter remorse.
