Book excerpt: Winner of the Whitbread Biography Award: A “profoundly moving [and] definitive” portrait of George Orwell, author of 1984 and larger-than-life literary genius (The Daily Telegraph). It was not easy to bury George Orwell. After a lifetime of iconoclasm, during which he professed no interest in religion and no affiliation with any church, he asked to be buried in an Anglican churchyard—but none would have him. Orwell’s friends fought for him to have a proper grave, however, and the author of 1984, Animal Farm, and Homage to Catalonia, among other brilliant works of prose, poetry, and journalism, was laid to rest in a quiet country cemetery. Almost immediately, his legacy was in dispute. Orwell did not want any biographies written of him, but that has not stopped scholars from trying. Of all those published since the author’s death in 1950, D. J. Taylor’s prize-winning book is considered the most definitive. Born in India, Orwell spent his forty-six years of life traveling the British Empire and confronting the world head on. From the trenches of Spain to the top of bestseller lists, Taylor presents Orwell fully—as a writer, social critic, and human being.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Career of Senator Robert Love Taylor (Our Bob) Immediately after Senator Taylor's death, even before his re mains were deposited in the grave, there arose an insistent de mand for his written life and lectures. While his body was lye ing in state in the Capitol at Nashville, being viewed by the pass ing throngs of weeping friends, hundreds were visiting the book stores of the city in search of Life Pictures, his latest work, containing a collection of his public addresses, lectures and mag azines editorials. These were disappointed because the book could not be procured for the reason that it was out of print as a result of a fire in the publishing house, which destroyed the electrotypes, and old editions had been exhausted. Soon scores of letters and messages began. To reach each of the surviving brothers appealing to us to write the story of his life, and to compile and publish his lectures, suggesting that we knew him and his works better than others, and that, therefore, we were best fitted for the task. Convinced by this argument, and yielding to these importunities, we have performed the duty as best we could, and trust to the generosity of an appreciative and magnanimous public for a verdict of approval. Whatever else may be said, we have strictly tracked the truth in detailing facts, without a wish to give the slightest coloring. We have attempted to give only some of the most interesting incidents of his career as they occurred, from time to time, throughout his history - for to have attempted to relate all of them would have compelled us to write an additional volume if not many other volumes. In addition to the biography of our brother, which is a work of collaboration, we have seen fit to insert some statements pre pared by a few of his friends who knew him best, giving them. Due credit therefor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The essential backstory to the creation and meaning of one of the most important novels of the twentieth century—and now the twenty-first. Since its publication nearly seventy years ago, George Orwell’s 1984 has been regarded as one of the most influential novels of the modern age. Politicians have testified to its influence on their intellectual identities, rock musicians have made records about it, TV viewers watch a reality show named for it, and a White House spokesperson tells of “alternative facts.” The world we live in is often described as an Orwellian one, awash in inescapable surveillance and invasions of privacy. On Nineteen Eighty-Four dives deep into Orwell’s life to chart his earlier writings and key moments in his youth, such as his years at a boarding school, whose strict and charismatic headmaster shaped the idea of Big Brother. Taylor tells the story of the writing of the book, taking readers to the Scottish island of Jura, where Orwell, newly famous thanks to Animal Farm but coping with personal tragedy and rapidly declining health, struggled to finish 1984. Published during the cold war—a term Orwell coined—Taylor elucidates the environmental influences on the book. Then he examines 1984’s post-publication life, including its role as a tool to understand our language, politics, and government. In a climate where truth, surveillance, censorship, and critical thinking are contentious, Orwell’s work is necessary. Written with resonant and reflective analysis, On Nineteen Eighty-Four is both brilliant and remarkably timely. Praise for On Nineteen Eighty-Four “A lively, engaging, concise biography of a novel.” —Kirkus Reviews “The fascinating origins and complex legacy of this enduring masterwork are chronicled in [this] arresting new book.” —BookPage “Brisk [and] focused. . . . Taylor here covers the highlights, giving both an overview of Orwell’s career and a survey of his greatest literary achievement.” —Wall Street Journal “Taylor is an accomplished literary critic and he illuminates Orwell’s work in the context of his life, elegantly and expertly charting his course from Grub Street to bestsellerdom.” —TheGuardian
