Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Travels, and Literary Career of Bayard Taylor It is a solemn yet pleasant duty to compile in comprehensive order the records of a life so eventful and influential as that of Bayard Taylor. Pleasant, because there is no task more satisfactory than that of recounting the deeds of a virtuous, industrious, heroic life. No text-book of morals, or of general history, is so effective in educating the young as the annals of well-spent years, gathered for that purpose. There is more or less influence in fables and mythological tales; and there is considerable power in a well written, skilfully plotted work of fiction; but the direct and unavoidable appeal of a noble life, which closed with honor and deserved renown, is far more potent and permanent in the culture and reformation of the world, than all other forms of intellectual and moral quickening. No apology is needed for writing such a biography. It would be inexcusable to leave the world in need of it. While it may not serve as well as the author desires in preserving an interest in Mr. Taylor's writings, and in presenting to the American people his most encouraging example, it will at least be a sincere tribute to Mr. Taylor's memory from the writer, who in foreign and inhospitable lands recieved from him most generous and patient assistance. Taylor was born on January 11, 1825, in Kennett Square in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth son, the first to survive to maturity, of the Quaker couple, Joseph and Rebecca (née Way) Taylor. His father was a wealthy farmer. Bayard received his early instruction in an academy at West Chester, Pennsylvania, and later at nearby Unionville. At the age of seventeen, he was apprenticed to a printer in West Chester. The influential critic and editor Rufus Wilmot Griswold encouraged him to write poetry. The volume that resulted, Ximena, or the Battle of the Sierra Morena, and other Poems, was published in 1844 and dedicated to Griswold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Kennett is a novel by American author Bayard Taylor. Taylor was a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, with a particular focus on travel writing. For this novel Taylor has taken his skills in travel writing and applied them to his own hometown of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which serves as the backdrop for this story. The Story of Kennett is exactly that - a novel about life in rural Pennsylvania in the 1900's. Taylor tells a fictionalized story that clearly draws its inspiration from real people and places. This is a book about country life and country drama and the characters that populate this world. The author gives us a front row seat at a Quaker meeting, details a barn raising, and invites us to both a country wedding and a funeral. A talented author, Taylor's writing places a great deal of emphasis on the environment, from the buildings to the animals to the countryside itself. In this way the essence the story also provides a scenic ride around the area in which the author grew up.
