Book excerpt: To examine athletic training students' perception of their Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) in relation to their preparation for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination, participants completed an online survey consisting of 2 multiple choice questions and 13 questions utilizing a 5-point Likert scale. T-tests were performed to analyze all data. Alpha level was set at 0.05. The respondents perceived their academic preparation as either satisfactory (N=573, 87.6%) or unsatisfactory (N=81, 12.4%). Significant differences existed between those respondents passing the written, simulation, and practical portions of the exam on the first attempt compared to those who failed those portions. Of the content areas, only Pharmacology (M=3.31), Psychosocial Intervention (M=2.89), Nutrition (M=2.82), and Healthcare Administration (M= 2.71) had mean scores above 2.50 (1=Excellent, 5=Poor). As perceived by athletic training students who sat for the certification examination, ATEP's are adequately preparing their students for the BOC certification examination.

Book excerpt: "This study guide for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam was inspired and developed as a result of a strong passion for our profession. Athletic training is a unique health care profession in that the athletic trainer is often in the position of experiencing the results of their efforts. The patients' victories are our victories, and their losses are our losses. We become friends, mentors, counselors, teachers, guardians, protectors, and healers. It takes a special individual to become a proficient and dedicated professional athletic trainer. Long hours are spent in the athletic training facility, classroom, and field experience venues preparing for the final exam that will allow you to place the letters "ATC" behind your name. Our intent in writing this study guide is to assist you in accomplishing that final goal of passing the BOC exam. It is an accumulation of dedicated research and past experience. We have included a section on study techniques to assist you in your preparation for the exam and a general overview of the exam format to help you organize your thoughts. This guide has been divided into 7 chapters: Study Techniques and Test-Taking Strategies, General Information and the Examination Format, Knowledge Assessment, Clinical Decision Making, Skills Assessment, Critical Thinking, and What to Do if You Do Not Pass the First Time. The multiple-choice and true/false questions in Chapter 3 have been organized according to the BOC's Practice Analysis, 7th ed Educational Domains and are also subdivided into related athletic training subjects to allow you to assess specific subjects in which you may be weak and those in which your strengths lie. Although this study guide will assist you in preparing for the certification exam, it should not be used in place of your textbooks or other sources of study from your academic program. It is not intended to be a practice exam; it is meant only to be used as an adjunct source of information and to tie everything you have learned in the classroom and during your clinical education experiences together. In Chapters 1 and 2, we have provided some specific tools to help you organize yourself up to 6 months prior to the examination. Chapter 3, Knowledge Assessment, consists of more than 1400 study questions. The majority of the multiple choice and true/false questions is a "mixed bag" of subjects derived from the BOC's Practice Analysis Educational Domains, and the balance covers most of the related subject matter of athletic training, as previously mentioned. Chapter 4, Clinical Decision Making, tests your ability to make appropriate judgment calls and improve your problem-solving skills. Each problem presents a specific scenario with several possible options that you can choose to follow. Chapter 5, Skills Assessment, is composed of 26 problems that are designed to test your manual athletic training skills. Chapter 6, Critical Thinking, is composed of scenario-based problems designed to test your ability to develop differential diagnoses. Chapter 7, What to Do if You Do Not Pass the First Time, is directed at helping you if your test results are not favorable. We have included some suggestions on how to deal with the immediate difficulties not passing may cause and how to begin the process of developing a new approach for your next attempt. Provided you have applied the information you have learned in the classroom and on the field to the study strategies we have offered in this manual, you will not need to read this final chapter. The 7th Edition also features an online component with a variety of questions. You can test your knowledge with these exams and receive the results for each when completed. Also, at the end of each sample exam, you will be able to review the questions along with the correct answers for a complete and comprehensive review. We wish you luck and look forward to welcoming you as a colleague"--

Book excerpt: This study explored the perceptions Athletic Training Students' harbored of the traits of preceptors they have been assigned. The preceptor characteristics examined in this study were nurturing, contemplative, consolidative, management, inspirational, and rigorous. These perceived traits of preceptors were then compared to Athletic Training Programs who were compliant and non-compliant with CAATE Standard 11 for Professional Programs. The study investigated whether there would be a significant difference in any of the trait characteristics between programs in compliance and non-compliance with Standard 11. This was a quantitative study in which data were collected via Preceptor Effectiveness Survey. The data were analyzed through SPSS 23 using descriptive statistics and MANOVA. The MANOVA failed to result in a significant multivariate effect, however, the univariate results indicated a significant difference between programs (p [less than].05) for the "rigorous" trait, F(1, 105) = 7.210, p = 0.008. Overall, noncompliant programs presented lower mean scores on all traits when compared to compliant schools. The study can offer evidence for effective preceptor traits in programs with successful Board of Certification (BOC) outcomes. This could be utilized to improve training, recruitment, hiring, establishing appropriate student-preceptor ratios to individual preceptors, and enhancing the overall student clinical experience.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine the progression of Board of Certification (BOC) Domain content within athletic training courses and the introduction of Domain content within the curriculum of the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) on first-time pass rate of the BOC exam for 2010 graduates. The researcher also gauged the perceptions of athletic training education program directors and instructional faculty regarding importance of specific ATEP characteristics on preparing students for success on the BOC examination. -- Invited study subjects included all Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Educated accredited ATEP directors and associated instructional faculty. Participants were e-mailed a study introduction and link to the survey. The researcher-developed survey gathered data outlining program specifics, BOC examination results, perceptions of ATEP characteristics, and institutional demographics. Pearson Product correlation analyses were utilized to determine relationships between school units where Domains were introduced and 1) percentage first-time success on the BOC and 2) average individual Domain score. Simultaneous Multiple Regression Analysis was applied to the data to identify optimal timing of introduction of each Domain. Strength of perceptions among respondents was established utilizing Chi square analysis Goodness of Fit, and Kendall's W. Pearson Product correlation analyses were also utilized to determine relationships between the independent variables of 1) ranking of importance of ATEP components on first-time success on the BOC and 2) successful implementation of ATEP components in the institution's ATEP with the dependent variables of 1) percentage first-time success on the BOC and 2) average individual Domain score. Multiple Step-Wise Forward Regressions were then applied to the significant factors. All qualitative responses provided in the survey data were coded utilizing an interpretive method of data coding. Overall descriptive statistics were computed on all survey items. -- With the results of this study, it was established that neither the sequence nor timing of Domain content had a measurable influence on first-time success on the BOC examination with correlations and multiple regressions demonstrating no significant results. The highest ranked ATEP component in regard to importance on first-time BOC success and successful implementation was Learning Over Time with a mode of "strongly agree" for each. The ranking of Qualifications of Instructors demonstrated predictive power for overall first-time pass percent on the BOC. Qualification of Instructors, Ratio of Instructors to Students, Sequencing of Content within Courses, and Sequencing of Courses each correlated positively to at least 1 of the average Domain scores. These findings suggest that perceptions of importance of ATEP components and actual implementation of ATEP components are more influential on BOC success than sequence or timing of Domain content.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the clinical education aspect of the athletic training preparation program at a Division II university aligns with the clinical standards. The program evaluation focused on current undergraduate athletic training candidates who were officially accepted into the current athletic training program. An assessment was given to better understand the current students' perceptions of their clinical instructor. Along with current students, alumni of the athletic training program were surveyed to evaluate their readiness attitude as they entered entry-level positions in athletic training. The clinical instructors also completed an evaluation form to categorize the clinical instruction taking place in the athletic training program. Using the mixed methods approach to gather qualitative and quantitative data assisted the stakeholders in evaluating the current status of clinical instruction. This enabled the program to create a strategic plan including the establishment of long-term and short-term goals. The program evaluation enabled the stakeholders to set measurements to determine if goals and benchmarks were achieved.
