Book excerpt: At the Mountains of Madness is a story, which details the events of a disastrous expedition to the Antarctic continent in September 1930 and what was found there by a group of explorers led by the narrator, Dr. William Dyer of Miskatonic University. Throughout the story, Dyer details a series of previously untold events in the hope of deterring another group of explorers who wish to return to the continent. The title is derived from a line in "The Hashish Man," a short story by fantasy writer Edward Plunkett, Lord Dunsany: "And we came at last to those ivory hills that are named the Mountains of Madness..." Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. He is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Some of Lovecraft's work was inspired by his own nightmares. His interest started from his childhood days when his grandfather would tell him Gothic horror stories.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Selection "The most exciting and definitive collection of Lovecraft's work out there." –Danielle Trussoni, New York Times Book Review No lover of gothic literature will want to be without this literary keepsake, the final volume of Leslie Klinger’s tour-de-force chronicle of Lovecraft’s canon. In 2014, The New Annotated H. P. Lovecraft was published to widespread acclaim— vaunted as a “treasure trove” (Joyce Carol Oates) for Lovecraft aficionados and general readers, alike. Hailed by Harlan Ellison as an “Olympian landmark of modern gothic literature,” the volume included twenty-two of Lovecraft’s original stories. Now, in this final volume, best- selling author Leslie S. Klinger reanimates twenty-five additional stories, the balance of Lovecraft’s significant fiction, including “Rats in the Wall,” a post– World War I story about the terrors of the past, and the newly contextualized “The Horror at Red Hook,” which recently has been adapted by best- selling novelist Victor LaValle. In following Lovecraft’s own literary trajectory, readers can witness his evolution from Rhode Island critic to prescient literary genius whose titanic influence would only be appreciated decades after his death. Including hundreds of eye- opening annotations and dozens of rare images, Beyond Arkham finally provides the complete picture of Lovecraft’s unparalleled achievements in fiction.

Book excerpt: Explore the marvelous complexity of Lovecraft's writing—including his use of literary allusions, biographical details, and obscure references in this rich, in-depth exploration of great horror fiction from the acknowledged master of the weird, including the stories "Herbert West—Reanimator", "Pickman's Model", "The Call of Cthulhu", "The Thing on the Doorstep", "The Horror at Red Hook" and more. Did Lovecraft believe in ghosts or paranormal phenomena? In what story does the narrator fear riding the Boston T? A pathfinder in the literary territory of the macabre, H.P. Lovecraft is one of America's giants of the horror genre. Now, in this second volume of annotated tales, Lovecraft scholars S. T. Joshi and Peter Cannon provide another rare opportunity to look into the mind of a genius. Their extensive notes lift the veil between real events in the writer's life—such as the death of his father—and the words that spill out onto the page in magnificent grotesquerie. Mansions, universities, laboratories, and dank New England boneyards appear also as the haunts where Lovecraft's characters confront the fabulous and fantastic, or—like the narrator in "Herbert West—Reanimator"—dig up fresh corpses. Richly illustrated and scrupulously researched, this extraordinary work adds exciting levels of meaning to Lovecraft's chilling tales . . . and increases our wonder at the magic that transforms life into a great writer's art.

Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition's uncanny discoveries - and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization - is a milestone of macabre literature. At the Mountains of Madness is a very good introduction to Lovecraft's mythology of the Old Ones and the glories and horrors that preceded humankind and that still linger in places. It is a good novella on it's own, and helpful to understanding events and creatures in his other works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally composed in 1931, H.P. Lovecraft's novella At the Mountains of Madness (1936) is one of his most famous and successful stories, with numerous overt connections to his other works. The story is narrated by Professor William Dyer, a geologist with Miskatonic University. He begins by explaining that he does not wish to tell his story, but is compelled to because men of science will not heed his warnings without explanations. Dyer led a team sponsored by the university that intended to use an advanced new drilling technology to extract samples from Antarctica. Dyer's team included Frank Pabodie, the inventor of the drill, as well as Lake and Atwood, fellow professors from the university, and assistants. Dyer makes it clear he is attempting to dissuade a planned second mission from following in their footsteps.Dyer details their initial work taking bore samples. Some of the samples seem to have triangular-shaped prints in them, but the team dismisses these as distortions. As the team moves over the South Pole, it sees a previously unknown range of mountains. Lake announces that he will take a team to explore this new feature, despite Dyer's misgivings. Lake and his team fly off in one of the expedition's airplanes, which crashes near the mountains. Lake and his team survive and set up a camp at the site. The team begins core sampling near the crash site and discovers an underground cavern. They cautiously enter the cavern and discover that it is filled with bones and shells--a huge amount of animal remains of all kinds. At first, the team is disturbed, but Dyer explains this by theorizing that the bones were carried into the cavern via runoff during ice melts, which satisfies the others.Further exploration reveals more than a dozen fossilized artifacts, described as "barrel-shaped." These fossils are in nearly perfect condition despite having clearly been in the cavern for a very long time. The team transports some of these fossils to the surface to have their first clear look at the creatures. Their bodies are barrel-shaped, with tentacle-like arms, star-shaped heads--and triangular feet that match the prints seen in earlier core samples.

Lovecraft not only explores the author’s fascinating life but also reveals his “lasting power and influence” on the entertainment industry and society as a whole (Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling) Interweaving the biography of the legendary writer with an exploration of Lovecraft as a phenomenon, In the Mountains of Madness strives to explain this reclusive, cultish figure while challenging some of the general views held by Lovecraft devotees. Focusing specifically on the large cross-section of horror and science fiction fans who know Lovecraft through films, role-playing games, and video games directly influenced by his work, but who know little or nothing about the man himself, In the Mountains of Madness places Lovecraft and his work in a cultural context, as an artist more in tune with our time than his own. More than a traditional biography, this provocative book reclaims the true essence of Lovecraft in relation to the comics of Joe Lansdale, the novels of Stephen King, and some of the biggest blockbuster films in contemporary America, proving the undying influence of this rare and significant figure.

Book excerpt: The award-winning French novelist pays tribute to a literary hero in this critical biography of the master of horror—with a foreword by Stephen King. Best known for his acclaimed novels, such as the Prix Goncourt-winning The Map and the Territory, Michael Houellebecq devotes his single work of nonfiction to the pioneering author of horror and weird fiction, H. P. Lovecraft. In a volume that is part biographical sketch and part pronouncement on existence and literature, France's most famous contemporary author praises his prewar American alter ego, whose style couldn't be less like his own. With a foreword by Lovecraft admirer Stephen King, this eloquently translated edition is an insightful introduction to both Lovecraft’s dark mythology and Houellebecq’s deadpan prose.
