Book excerpt: This study examined the extent of transfer shock experienced by community college students transferring to an urban public university. Review of the published literature on transfer shock uncovered no studies of this type conducted at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), urban or otherwise. Accordingly, a public urban HBCU was chosen to serve as the focus of this research. Six cohorts, consisting of community college transfer students entering the HBCU in the falls of 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, or 2005, formed the study's parameters. Students transferring to the HBCU in the falls of 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 had their academic performance tracked for all four semesters, while fall 2004 transferees were tracked for three semesters, and 2005 fall entrants for only one semester. The study ended in December 2005. Secondary data and the quantitative method were employed in this research. The data studied have been stored at the HBCU, available upon request, subject to approval by the Institution's Review Board. The IRB approved the request for the data sought for this study, which were obtained from the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in an electronic format with no identifying information; therefore, no interviews or any other interaction with these students were needed. Of the requested data, those pertaining to gender, age, enrollment status (full-time or part-time), semester and year of initial enrollment, final community college GPA and HBCU GPAs (first through fourth semester enrollment), and the final HBCU GPA were the obtained data. Other literature in this field indicated that community college transfer students who transferred from community colleges that prepared them well for transfer to four-year colleges were less likely to suffer from transfer shock. Studying the amount of transfer shock encountered by transfer students from various community colleges could have indicated the quality of preparation given students at these various community colleges. Collecting such data year-to-year would also have yielded a pattern indicating the consistency of quality of preparing these students for transfer, along with creating a longitudinal study. Qualitative studies would have provided an added dimension to these studies. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Florida's undergraduate organization of higher education is a 2 + 2 system in which students are encouraged to complete freshmen and sophomore years at a community college and then transfer to a state university. Florida statutes provide for a highly articulated educational system to facilitate seamless transition from one public institution to another. The researcher investigated the transfer function's effectiveness among community college students subsequent to enrollment at a large, urban, doctoral/research extensive university in Florida using a course-based model of transfer success. The research explored whether differences existed in academic performance in targeted upper-division undergraduate courses between native and Florida Community College System (FCCS) transfer students who completed prerequisite courses prior to transferring to the university. Four upper-division courses were chosen specifically because many transfer students complete prerequisite coursework at a community college prior to matriculating at the university. A total of 764 native students and 1,053 FCCS transfer students were enrolled in at least one course of interest in fall 2002. Preliminary investigation of selected demographic characteristics identified statistically significant differences between these two groups. Native students were younger and more racially/ethnically diverse; more native students were enrolled full time (for 12 or more credits) than transfer students. Although first-term transfer students experienced transfer shock, university native students who were enrolled in three courses also experienced declines in fall 2002 GPA when compared to their previous GPA at the university. Statistically significant mean grade differences occurred between transfer and native students in three courses; transfers outperformed native students in two courses. Additional comparisons of fall 2002 term GPA between native and transfer students yielded no significant differences. Findings lend support to the effectiveness of Florida's community colleges in preparing students for upper-division undergraduate coursework, but that transition for some is not seamless, suggesting need for collaboration among universities and community colleges.

Book excerpt: To help students through the difficult process of transfer, many institutions nationwide have developed Transfer Centers, physical locations where students can come to learn more about the transfer process. The mission of Transfer Centers is to promote and support community college students who are seeking to transfer to four-year institutions. The present study examines the role of the Transfer Center in nine community colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) to understand the effectiveness of the centers in promoting student transfer and their role in supporting students who are on the pathway to transfer. To assess the effectiveness of the Transfer Centers within the community colleges, the present study utilized qualitative data from the center directors and the students who utilize the Transfer Center services. Two stages of examination were simultaneously employed. One level of data collection involved interviewing the Directors of each Transfer Center while the other included focus groups with students. The sample for this study is the nine Transfer Centers located on the campuses of the Los Angeles Community Colleges. A random design allowed the researchers to collect data in a focus group format on a wide range of students who were from different educational backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. The focus groups typically included three to five students at each campus, resulting in a sample size of 58 students. A case study methodology was used, and the main form of data collection was through interviews and focus group transcripts. Questions centered around understanding what helps and hinders the success of student transfer as well as the barriers to providing students services for transferring. Findings focused on themes delineated from interviews with community college students and supported by comments made by Transfer Center directors highlighting the complexities of student needs and services. Student interviews revealed three aspects that help or hinder the progress of student transfer: knowledge of the transfer process, academics (sufficient grades necessary to transfer), and financial limitations as a barrier to transfer. Findings among Transfer Center directors interviews supplemented the student interviews and resulted in two major themes: institutional support and external influences. Some directors reported that they felt they had sufficient institutional support while others felt that they were in conflict with the administration and faculty on their campus. Among the exterior influences that directors identified were that community college students had outside commitments, like jobs, family responsibilities, and other life stressors that interfere with their school studies. Other barriers identified by directors was student confusion regarding transfer. The ASSIST website was identified by both students and directors as a tool to facilitate the transfer function. ASSIST, or the Articulation System Stimulating Inter-institutional Student Transfer, is a computerized information system created to provide detailed and current transfer and articulation information for transfer between the California Community Colleges and the public university systems. It is concluded that barriers exist that limit the potential of transfer for community college students and the transfer function for community colleges themselves, and that Transfer Centers are in need of greater support. Book excerpt: This qualitative phenomenological study examines transfer shock and the experience of community college students as they transitioned to California State University, Chico. Interviews were conducted with 13 community college transfer students who experienced a difficult transition to the four year institution as evidenced by a significant first semester drop in grade point average, known as transfer shock. The five research questions were: 1. How do students characterize their transition experience? 2. What are transfer students' expectations around transfer? 3. What differences do transfers students report between the two and four year institutions? 4. What helps and hindrances to their transition do students report? 5. What additional types of support might be offered by the institution to aid their transition experience? The author utilized Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1995) as a lens to explore the transition experiences of students during their first semester at the new institution. Schlossberg posits that situation, self, supports and strategies (the 4 S's) impact an individual's ability to transition successfully. The researcher found that students characterized their transition in negative and positive terms. Student's expectations were largely inaccurate in that they expected their experience at the four year institution to be very similar to their community college experience. Instead, they discovered many differences between institutions in terms of the academic and social environment and campus culture. Overall, the findings revealed that the academic transition was much more difficult for students than the social transition. For example, students found classes at the four year institution larger and more demanding with less instructor interaction. In regards to the social transition, study participants reported that Chico State provided a welcoming social environment in which it was easy to make friends. They also found that the campus culture was more positive and goal-oriented at the four year level than at the community college. Overall, study participants reported many more hindrances than helps to their transition experience. In particular, transfer students who lived away from home for the first time experienced difficulties with time management and basic life skills such as cooking and cleaning. One of the greatest hindrances to many transfer students in their transition was their reluctance to seek help. Challenges reported at the institutional level included: difficulties with the admission process, obstacles to obtaining academic advising and lack of information about academic and probation policies. Using Schlossberg's Transition Theory as a lens to assess students' coping strategies revealed that students' assessment of their situation, as well their unwillingness to reach out for support contributed to their transition difficulties. This study concludes with policy and future research recommendations, as well as an emerging theoretical framework of transfer socialization. Institutions must consider the entire transfer process beginning at the community college and extending through the first semester at the new institution. Therefore, in order to help students avoid transfer shock, interventions must be staged at key points along the transition continuum.

Rising tuition rates, coupled with a declining economy in the United States, make the community college's lower cost, convenient location and flexible class schedules even more attractive, if not necessary, for many students (Cohen & Brawer, 2003, 2008). According to Cejda and Kaylor (2001), enrollment numbers at the community college are not just increasing in general, but these institutions are also experiencing an increase in the number of traditional college-aged students (18-24) enrolled, leading to an increase in the number of potential transfer students. However, only an average of 22% of community college students ever make the transfer to a four-year institution, even with interest or intent to transfer averages around 70% (Romano, 2004). The purpose of this study was to identify predictive factors of retention and persistence to graduation for in-state community college transfer students at a four-year public research university through the use of existing institutional student data. Demographic and transcript data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis to develop and validate a predictive model. Results of the analyses found that pre- and post-transfer grade point average (GPA), number of transfer hours, course withdrawals, grades of F at the four-year site institution, age at time of enrollment, academic major, and the number of community colleges attended were predictive within the three models of post-transfer outcomes of graduated at any time, graduated in two years, and graduated in four years.

However, in rural areas of Texas, little research is available on the barriers students endure in transferring from community colleges to four-year universities. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to determine the transfer barriers faced by a community college student population and the support services needed for their successful transfers to four-year universities. The framework that guided this study was transfer student capital and transfer shock. Transfer shock is when a student transfers from community college to university and experiences culture shock in the university culture. Transfer student capital is the support needed for transfer students. The researcher gathered the data through one-on-one interviews with 15 community college students who transferred to a four-year university. Prior to the interviews, each participant completed a presurvey consisting of questions about their community college experiences, including support received on transferring and how it impacted their decisions to transfer to a university. Participants shared in interviews that their major barriers for transferring from the community college to a university were academic advising, personal issues, and inadequate collegiate services for transfer students, such as enrollment services, financial services, and university support programs.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the impact of pre-transfer characteristics with a focus on course selection decisions at the community college, demographic variables including age, ethnicity and gender, and post-transfer college academic characteristics on variables for transferability of credits and two-year persistence. The sample included 2,006 transfer students entering a large public four-year institution from two of the top feeder community colleges over a period of four years. National Student Clearinghouse records and transcript analysis were used to code the percent of community college credits accepted for credit and enrollment two years following the first semester of matriculation at the four-year university as exogenous variables. Community college records were coded into categories corresponding to three "pathways" to transfer: completion of state-mandated core coursework, attainment of an associate degree prior to transfer, and alignment of coursework with major-specific pre-requisites included in transfer planning guides prepared by the four-year institution. A hypothesized path model developed based on the literature for community college transfer was not supported by the data. Kruskal-Wallis H test and logistic regression analyses were used to identify significant predictor variables for credit transfer and two-year persistence, including comparative analyses for the three pathways. Ethnicity and gender were not significant predictors of two-year persistence. Significant differences in persistence were found for class level and age at the time of transfer and multiple group analysis methods were used to sub-divide the sample. Results revealed that of the three pathways, only coursework alignment with transfer planning guides was a significant predictor for persistence. Other variables significant in predicting persistence included course completion ratio, transfer shock in the first semester, and transfer GPA. Findings for persistence varied across age groups and class level at matriculation.
