En su origen, en la década del 20, enfatizaba un principio que no ha perdido vigencia en la actualidad y que indudablemente se ha hecho más relevante, sino tal vez -desde la perspectiva ética- más urgente, a saber: si la empresa utiliza recursos privados y públicos, éstos deben utilizarse de manera que los beneficios que generen no afecten negativamente, sino que favorezcan el bienestar de la sociedad. Este libro delimita el ámbito de aplicación de la RSE, asumiendo las restricciones legales, sociales, económicas, institucionales y de gestión estratégica, aunque con un rol central de los principios y valores de corporativos, que deben ser definidos por los máximos niveles directivos de una organización. Toma en cuenta, además, el amplio consenso que existe respecto de que una de las competencias fundamentales de las organizaciones modernas, es su capacidad de construir relaciones estables y de mutua confianza con su entorno interno y externo, como condición previa para el logro de objetivos sostenibles.

La RSE ha permitido que las organizaciones de manera voluntaria, generen compromisos con sus stakeholders (accionistas, asociaciones empresariales, industriales o profesionales, clientes, competidores, comunidades donde la empresa tiene operaciones, dueños, empleados, gobiernos, inversionistas, medios de comunicación, Organizaciones no Gubernamentales (ONGs), proveedores, sindicatos y familia), siendo esto una ventaja competitiva en su gremio. Actualmente se cuenta con indicadores para evaluar comportamientos de RSE propuestos por diferentes organizaciones, los cuales se aplican de manera voluntaria permitiendo que las empresas elijan los indicadores que desean comunicar. Este ejercicio académico tiene la propuesta de unificación de indicadores para permitir un análisis homologado en materias de: gobernanza organizacional, derechos humanos, practicas laborales, medio ambiente, practicas justas de operación, asuntos de consumidores, participación activa y desarrollo de la comunidad, que a la vez se reflejan en temas como: costos, diálogos con las partes interesadas, condiciones de trabajo, cuidado del medio ambiente, comportamientos éticos, políticas de atención al cliente e inversión social, entre otras. Al consolidar estos indicadores para analizar cada escenario de impacto se puede pasar de decisiones netamente económicas a evaluaciones del entorno, ya que la unificación de estas iniciativas y modelos facilitará realizar un benchmark, ganando la RSE una participación significativa en el ámbito mundial. This need for "sustainable development" is and more by the responsible parties. Moreover, in the being recognised more search for solution strategies the realisation is gaining ground that tourism must be viewed as a worldwide phenomenon whose development must be co-ordinated in a co-operative effort spanning regions and continents. That the preservation of biological diversity also requires global co operation has been confirmed by over 170 countries which have already acceded to the "Convention on Biological Diversity". It is thus an important task to provide the foundations for joint action. Germany, one of the largest source countries of international tourism, must feel particularly obligated in this regard. The report published here is the result of a research project com missioned by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The study pursued and examined the thesis that the Convention on Biological Diversity be used as a central instrument for arriving at international principles and regulations for combining nature conservation and tourism which could lead to a sustainable development of tourism. To further the discussion, the authors brought the study to a logical conclusion by working out a proposal for a "tourism protocol" additional to the existing Convention on Biodiversity. Such a protocol additional to the Convention would entail the stipulation of internationally binding implementation and regulations for achieving sustainable tourism.
