Book excerpt: In solving the Boltzmann transport equation, most discrete ordinates codes calculate the source term by first approximating the scattering cross section using a Legendre polynomial expansion. Such expansions are insufficient when scattering is anisotropic and the Legendre expansion is truncated prematurely. This can lead to nonphysical negative cross sections, negative source terms and negative angular fluxes. While negative sources are problematic for standard discrete ordinates methods leading to poor convergence or convergence to incorrect results, they are of particular concern to exponential methods, causing such calculations to fail. We've developed and tested a new technique to solve this problem called the Monte Carlo Facet Method. This method is an extension of standard Monte Carlo techniques. It guarantees non-negative cross sections at all directional ordinates. It also ensures within group and next group scatter. This dissertation outlines previous attempts to handle anisotropic scattering to achieve non-negative sources. It develops the theory of the Monte Carlo facet method and its first angular moment conservation. Results are presented examining the scattering matrices for various materials, and finally demonstrating that these scattering matrices perform exceptionally well in a multi-group, anisotropic, unstructured mesh discrete ordinates transport code.

Book excerpt: A spectral analysis of the transport kernel for anisotropic scattering in finite slabs is achieved by first solving a type of generalized scattering problem for a subcritical slab. Initially, the scattering problem is stated as an inhomogeneous integral transport equation with a complex-valued source function. This is readily transformed to singular integral equations and linear constraints in which the space and angle variables enter as parameters. The sangular equations are transformed to Fredholm equations by an extension of Muskhelishvili's standard method and by analytic continuation. It is shown that for a wide class of scattering functions this particular Fredholm reduction yields equations which converge rapidly under iteratioon for all neutron productions and slab thicknesses. Specific applications to linear anisotropic and isotropic scattering in slab geometry are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: A computer program was developed as part of an attempt to solve the neutron transport equation in as general a manner as present day machine capacity will permit. The iterative technique employed is equivaient to the EQUlPOlSE method modified by a form of block relaxation. In terms of mesh sweeps, the procedure is extremely rapid by comparison with a similar program. Two energy groups, 16 angular directions, and 400 mesh points, are provided. Anisotropic scattering is permitted, and an arbitrary onedimensional distribution of material properties can be used. Checks of the results of the program against published analytical results for both isotropic and anisotropic scattering were in excellent agreement. (auth).

The nonclassical SPN equations with anisotropic scattering are then expressed in modified forms so that vacuum boundary conditions can be applied. Finally, these equations are validated numerically in slab geometry, showing that they become more accurate as the system becomes more diffusive.
