Book excerpt: For many decades, policy makers have struggled in closing the academic achievement gap present in schools across America. Most recently charter schools were integrated into federal law as one of many approaches to narrow the academic achievement and attainment gaps. Previous research has shown that there are differences in self-efficacy beliefs and that these beliefs can help account for the academic achievement and attainment differences that exist. Furthermore, with post-secondary goals and choices often made before students are upperclassmen in high school, middle school is the prime time for decisions. This study used an empirical research approach method to investigate the self-efficacy scores of students and its relationship to college-going self-efficacy using two research instruments: Bandura's Children's Self-Efficacy Scale, a questionnaire used to measure students' confidence on school-related tasks, and Gibbons and Borders' College-Going Self-Efficacy Survey, a questionnaire used to measure students' confidence on college related tasks. The results of the Pearson Correlation revealed a strong positive correlation between self-efficacy and college-going self-efficacy scores.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study examines the role of an explicit college-going intervention on the self-reported levels of college-going self-efficacy for rural middle school students. While there are a multitude of variables that influence a student's decision to pursue formal education beyond high school, this study focused on college-going self-efficacy, which is one of the constructs included in the Social Cognitive Career Theory. Rural seventh grade students answered fourteen questions from a College-Going Self-Efficacy scale pre-intervention and then completed the same questions post-intervention. The intervention consisted of lessons that addressed common barriers students see as prohibiting them from going to college, including finding ways to pay for college, having enough family support for college, and possessing the academic ability to go to college. Findings from the study showed that the self-reported levels of college-going self-efficacy did increase from the first survey administration to the second. Additionally, findings revealed that students qualifying for free or reduced lunches had a lower college-going self-efficacy score than their peers in the paid lunch group. Gains seen in college-going self-efficacy scores were greater for students in the paid lunch category than those in the free / reduced lunch category. While many factors contributing to students' post high school plans are based in family experiences, culture, or expectations, this study demonstrated that student levels of college-going self-efficacy can be impacted by a school-based intervention.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of a college workshop on the college and career self-efficacy and college intent of eighth grade students in a semi-rural setting. The study aimed to fill the gap in the literature by examining college and career self-efficacy and college intent for middle school students in semi-rural areas in the United States as they move to high school. Two groups of eighth grade students from two middle schools in a school district in West-Central Florida participated in the study. The study used a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest non-equivalent waitlist control group design. Students in the treatment group participated in a week-long online career exploration workshop followed by a visit on the campus of a large suburban Florida state college. Students in the waitlist control group took the pretest and posttest after data had been collected; however, they did not receive the treatment until after the posttest. The study answered the research questions whether participation in the college workshop affected participants' posttest scores regarding college and career self-efficacy as well as college intent. Pretest and posttest used the College-Going Self-Efficacy Scale for Middle School Students and the Career Self-Efficacy Scale0́3Short Form, as well as a College Intent Question, which inquired about students' intent to attend college. Data analyses included a chi-square of independence and analyses of covariance. Results showed that students who participated in the college workshop had higher levels of college-going and career-decision self-efficacy than students who did not. However, college intent was not affected by participation in the college workshop.

Research indicates that high school and even middle school is often too late for students to begin the process of college and career planning. This dissertation includes two manuscripts. The first manuscript is a review of the literature related to college and career readiness, childhood development of elementary school students, including their college-going self-efficacy, instructional strategies that school counselors should consider employing in presenting college and career readiness units, and factors specific to working with elementary school students in rural areas. The second manuscript describes a study using a time series research design that examined the effect of a college access intervention, I'm Going to College, on the college-going self-efficacy of rural fifth grade students (n = 34) in an effort to determine the value of early (pre-adolescent) college access interventions. The hypothesis that the I'm Going to College curriculum increased the college-going self-efficacy of rural fifth grade students as evaluated by the College-Going Self-Efficacy Scale (CGSES), was supported. Results indicated that there is a relationship between early college access interventions and college-going self-efficacy of rural fifth grade students as shown by significant change in three of the six items on the CGSES. Implications of this study are discussed.
