Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of the Holy Scriptures The present volume is not an altogether new work. As stated in the title-page, it is an abridged edition of the larger volume on General Introduction which the present writer published a few years ago. Although this larger work was well received by the public, as proved by. The fact that its third edition is nearly exhausted, professors of Holy Scripture often expressed the wish that a shorter form of it could be issued. An abridged edition, it was argued, would enable students to cover more easily the ground of General Introduction within the short space of time at their disposal, while the unabridged work would prove to them a valuable book of reference, and continue to be useful to priests on the mission and to readers generally. It was also supposed that in its shorter form the General Introduction would be wel come as a text-book in colleges and other institutions where the larger work had but little chance to be adopted. It is for these and similar reasons that the present edition has been prepared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Hand-Book: An Introduction to the Study of Sacred Scripture In this reissue the original plan has been retained, with some rearrangement, substantially unaltered. The matter of the book however has been freely dealt with. While large portions most characteristic of the author'sstandpoint and purpose have been kept, with but slight revision, much else has been rewritten or added in view of later scholarship, and much omitted under necessities of space. The book is, therefore, a combination of old and new, and here and there the seams may, possibly be apparent. Yet it is hoped that even students of the old Handbook will welcome the new, and that after more than fifty years of usefulness it may, in spite of the in evitable limitations under which this revision has been conducted, fulfil still more amply the aim stated in the original Preface, 'to teach men to understand and appre ciate the bible.' It aims to pre sent the principal facts that every intelligent person ought to know. It directs the students' attention chiefly to the Bible itself; and as a literary, historical, and ethical study, the Scriptures will be found, in the case of many readers, to be a book of unsuspected interest and value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. May the public be only as well pleased with the present as with past editions! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Hand-Book: An Introduction to the Study of Sacred The following pages are intended as an introduction to the study of Scripture, and are written with the view of being used by all classes of intelligent readers. On a first perusal by younger readers, it is suggested that the sections marked in the table of contents, be omitted, together with such paragraphs as may be thought too abstruse. The attempt to adapt the work to both young and advanced students, renders such a selection at the outset desirable; and the whole has been written so as. To make the portions read, in the first in stance, easily intelligible and complete in themselves. On the other hand, any who wish to consult the book on particular subj ects - as on the study of the Greek Testament, or on the proof of particular doctrines - can easily do so by the help of the index. If any wish to connect the study of, these pages with the study of Theological Science generally, he will find the fol lowing classification important. One may study the history in the Bible, but it Will be more real and valuable if the man who helped make the history stands out in bold relief, and with him is associated the geography, conditions and events. We may make an excursion into the country for the purpose of fishing, and that may be our main object, but the true fisherman and lover of nature also learns something about the stream, the flowers and the birds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture: The Principles, Methods, History, and Results of Its Several Departments and of the Whole In 1883 the volume entitled Biblical Study, its Principles, Methods, and History, together with a Catalogue of Books of Reference was published. In the preface it was said: "This work is the product of the author's experience as a student of the Bible, and a teacher of theological students in Biblical Study. From time to time, during the past fourteen years, he has been called upon to give special attention to particular themes in public addresses and Review articles. In this way the ground of Biblical Study has been quite well covered. This scattered material has been gathered, and worked over into an organic system." The volume has been issued from the press nine times since that date, and there still seems to be a demand for it on the part of the public. The author has long felt the need of a more thorough revision of the volume, as the result of fifteen years' additional study; but he has been prevented by many hindrances from doing what he so greatly desired to do, until the present year. He has used his volume as a text-book in the Union Theological Seminary, New York, during all this period, and has gone over the whole subject afresh every year. This year being the twenty-fifth anniversary of his professorate, he felt impelled to undertake the task, and to make out of the volume a new one, which would cover the whole ground of the study of Holy Scripture, and the results of all that study during the past fifteen years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels In issuing the new edition of this Essay, I can only repeat what I said nearly six years ago. The book remains with all its shortcomings such as it was when first written. Once again some mistakes which I had detected myself, and others which friends pointed out to me, have been corrected: a few additions have been made; a few phrases have been modified; but this is all that has been done in revision, nor did I purpose to do more. If the Essay has any value, it lies chiefly, 1 believe, in the encouragement which it offers to students who desire to examine the records of our Faith with patient and devout trust in the Spirit of Truth. They will know, scarcely less well than I do, where the fulfilment of my plan falls short of the design; but they will know also the certainty of the assurance, which each days work makes stronger, that Holy Scripture opens treasures new and old to men and to Churches, now as in former times, when the scribe becomes a disciple of the kingdom of God.
