He translated some of the minor poems of Schiller in 1823. Later, his attention was directed to German Theology, and finding there was no English version of Eichorn's 'Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament, ' he set to work to make one. For this purpose he studied Hebrew and Arabic; with Greek he was well acquainted. But he gave up the task when he had translated a portion of the work, and he took no steps for printing even this. Now, in his ninety-eighth year, he has asked me to have the fragment printed. The translation was made from an early edition of Eichorn's works. From my ignorance of the languages of antiquity, it is not within my competence to do more than to correct the proofs of the translation. I regret that circumstances prevent my calling in further help than has been kindly afforded by the printer. Therefore, there is a reciprocal relationship between the writings or "books" of the Old Testament and the life of Israel in its history. The understanding of the texts presupposes insights into the historical context and the development of the life of Israelite society, while at the same time the texts themselves are the most important, indeed for the most part the only, source for it. This "Introduction" attempts to take account of this reciprocal relationship. The first part deals with the history of Israel. However, its approach differs from most accounts of this history. It takes the Old Testament texts themselves as a starting point and first of all outlines the picture of historical developments and associations which the texts present. An attempt is then made, on this basis, to reconstruct historical developments by introducing material from outside the Bible. This method of working leads to close connections between the second and third parts, because it has to take account of the nature and original purpose of the texts and their function within the biblical books as they are now. The second part attempts to present the texts collected in the Old Testament as expressions of the life of Israel. The third part discusses the books of the Old Testament in their present form.

In a few cases where Bleek's decisions appeared most at variance with those of sober and conservative critics, references have been given to works where what is thought to be the sounder view is maintained. But, on the whole, the book has been left to stand on its own merits, and to speak for itself. Thus, it is believed, its real usefulness has been best consulted. The student will be furnished with the data on which Bleek's own conclusions have been based, but he will not be compelled to accept these conclusions as indubitable without further reflection. He may trust to the facts being, on the whole, fairly and impartially stated; but he must not be surprised if in some instances Bleek's deductions from the facts fail to commend themselves to his judgment. He will be careful to distinguish between the phenomena which Bleek brings so clearly before his notice and the explanations of the phenomena he gives. These explanations may be, and sometimes are, precarious, if not erroneous. These, however, which are rather errors of judgment than of principle, are not such as to affect materially the value of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Study the Old Testament The aim of this course of study is to enable each student to gain a clear, comprehensive and proportionate knowledge of the chief characters, events, movements and ideas represented by Old Testament history, and to secure a bird's-eye view of Old Testament literature and thinking. Method These outlines divide the year's work into 104 definite assignments so that the entire Old Testament may be covered in one year of private reading and study, in one year's college work (three hours a week), or in classes in one year of fifty-two weeks (two assignments a week). The outlines are based on Sanders' "History of the Hebrews" and in each lesson the first reading reference is always to that work. The reading references to the four volumes of Kent's "Historical Bible" present a clear translation and arrangement of the more important Old Testament writings and with the accompanying historical, geographical and literary interpretations furnish an ample basis for connected reading and study. It will always be understood that an essential part of the preparation for each lesson is the careful answering of the questions which are placed at the beginning of each group of numbered sections of Sanders' "History of the Hebrews." (For example, section 33, page 25.) These questions are carefully formulated in order to direct the Bible reading of the student and to save his time. If every question is answered thoughtfully from the Bible, and if the incidental references are looked up, the student cannot fail to gain a complete working knowledge of the subject. At the end of each lesson additional reading references are given which are entirely optional and are intended for those having access to additional reference books. These references may be utilized for advanced study or in the preparation of special papers. In connection with each lesson the outstanding facts are given and these should be carefully noted.
