Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of the Holy Scriptures The present volume is not an altogether new work. As stated in the title-page, it is an abridged edition of the larger volume on General Introduction which the present writer published a few years ago. Although this larger work was well received by the public, as proved by. The fact that its third edition is nearly exhausted, professors of Holy Scripture often expressed the wish that a shorter form of it could be issued. An abridged edition, it was argued, would enable students to cover more easily the ground of General Introduction within the short space of time at their disposal, while the unabridged work would prove to them a valuable book of reference, and continue to be useful to priests on the mission and to readers generally. It was also supposed that in its shorter form the General Introduction would be wel come as a text-book in colleges and other institutions where the larger work had but little chance to be adopted. It is for these and similar reasons that the present edition has been prepared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture We live in an age of great activity. It is also an age Wherein material progress and the love of worldly pleasure tend to enfeeble man's hold on the supernatural world. It is most evident that there is a general movement away from the spiritual world. In non-catholic thought the idea of a reduced Christianity is dominant. A mere natural religion recommends itself to many. The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them because they are spiritually examined. [i. Cor. II. Instead of accepting religion as a mysterious message from Heaven, men make a religion that is not religious. A religion is sought that will not interfere with man's worldly tastes and pleasures. Human reason is made the judge of all the works of God. Arianism is recrudescent under another name and formula. The mystery of Christ's Divinity, the miracles of the Bible, the extraordinary action of God in the Revelation and Inspiration of the Scriptures are made the special objects of attack in this modern fashion of thought. That which is most deplorable is that this tendency has in some degree invaded the minds of some Catholic scholars. Clear calls of warning come from Christ's Vicar; the danger is grave. The demon of unbelief finds strong allies in the pride and rebellion of fallen human nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture: The Principles, Methods, History, and Results of Its Several Departments and of the Whole In 1883 the volume entitled Biblical Study, its Principles, Methods, and History, together with a Catalogue of Books of Reference was published. In the preface it was said: "This work is the product of the author's experience as a student of the Bible, and a teacher of theological students in Biblical Study. From time to time, during the past fourteen years, he has been called upon to give special attention to particular themes in public addresses and Review articles. In this way the ground of Biblical Study has been quite well covered. This scattered material has been gathered, and worked over into an organic system." The volume has been issued from the press nine times since that date, and there still seems to be a demand for it on the part of the public. The author has long felt the need of a more thorough revision of the volume, as the result of fifteen years' additional study; but he has been prevented by many hindrances from doing what he so greatly desired to do, until the present year. He has used his volume as a text-book in the Union Theological Seminary, New York, during all this period, and has gone over the whole subject afresh every year. This year being the twenty-fifth anniversary of his professorate, he felt impelled to undertake the task, and to make out of the volume a new one, which would cover the whole ground of the study of Holy Scripture, and the results of all that study during the past fifteen years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General and Critical Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture The works on Scriptural Introduction that we have in English are chiefly of protestant authors, and are inaccurate, filled with partisan hatred of Catholicity, and they have not kept pace with the progress of thought of this last half century. Thereupon, I conceived the design of writing my book, and it is the result of four years' unremitting toil. In this work, my aspirations have been very high. How far the achievement has come short of the aspirations, I leave to be decided by the judgment of the public. I have tried to write justly, not having in mind to advance any cause save the cause of truth. A chief feature of the present work is the arrangement of the traditional data favoring the deuterocanonical books in parallel columns with the scriptural passages therein quoted. This is the result of great labor, but I believe that the enhance ment of the evidential value of such data thus arranged repays such labor. Another feature of the work, which, I hope, will be grate ful to students, is the wide margins of the pages, which render it possible to write thereon things of special importance heard from the teacher. It would fill all my hopes of this present work to know that, in some degree, I had made the message of God more known and more loved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures Criticism, in the more extensive sense of the term, is the art of forming a correct judgment concerning any object proposed to our consideration. In a more restricted sense, particularly with reference to the works of antient authors, it was fashionable, for a considerable time, among the literati on the continent of Europe, to employ this term as indicating merely that kind of labour and judgment, which was employed in settling the genuineness of the whole or part of the text of any author. But the term is now generally used in a much more enlarged sense, viz. to indicate any kind of labour or judgment, which is occupied either in the literary history of the text itself, or is settling or explaining it. To the former the German philosophers have given the appellation of lower criticism; while the latter has been termed higher criticism, because its objects and results are of a much more important nature. In this latter sense, the term is taken in the present volume, which is devoted to the consideration of the Criticism and Interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. The First Part, which treats on Scripture Criticism, will be found to comprise a concise account of the languages in which the Sacred Volume is written; a sketch of its. literary history, and of the several divisions and subdivisions of it, which have obtained at different times, The nature of various readings, and the means of determining genuine readings, will next be considered, together with the quotations from the Old Testament in the New, and the nature and different kinds of Harmonies of the Old and New Testament. In the Second Part the principles and subsidiary means of Scripture Interpretation are discussed, together with the application of them to the exposition of the Sacred Volume, both exegetical and practical.
