Book Synopsis A Field Guide to Tropical Plant Families by : Roland Keller
Download or read book A Field Guide to Tropical Plant Families written by Roland Keller and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-12 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an identification system permitting recognition of plant families in all seasons by means of morphological and macroanatomical features which are easily observable, such as bark, exudates, stems and leaves characters. Studies of forest vegetation may differ in their underlying objectives, but they all require taxonomic knowledge. The process of taxonomy begins with an inventory of the flora, which has been based to a large extent on reproduction-related organs, such as flowers and fruits. But, those are often difficult to observe and may not exist in the field at a given time. Unlike most such guides or keys, this book can be used anywhere in the tropics and provides, in a straightforward two or three-step process, identification to the level of families, which are now circumscribed according to molecular as well as morphological characters in the universally accepted scheme of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group. Plant architecture is not a prerequisite theme for plant identification; however, we think that an introduction to this subject is not out of place in this book (architectural traits are taxonomically sound): it is now time for botanists working in the tropics to have an idea on how the whole organism keeps growing. Within the family accounts, there is information concerning important economic plants with notes on the larger genera and, particularly helpfully, discussion of families readily confused and how to separate them. Descriptions of the families rely on short diagnosis bolstered by many photographic pictures, lines drawings and extracts from the author’s field books, all showing features of plants as they are found in the forest.

Book Synopsis Genetic Improvement of Tropical Crops by : Hugo Campos
Download or read book Genetic Improvement of Tropical Crops written by Hugo Campos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh, updated perspective of the current status and perspectives in genetic improvement of a diverse array of tropical crops. The first part covers aspects which are relevant across crops, namely how to maximize the use of genetic information through modern bioinformatic approaches and how to use statistics as a tool to sustain increased genetic gains and breeding efficiency. The second part of the book provides an updated view of some seed-propagated crops, such as rice, maize and oil palm, as well as crops propagated through vegetative means such as sweet potato, cassava, banana and sugarcane. Each chapter addresses the main breeding objectives, markets served, current breeding approaches, biotechnology, genetic progress observed, and in addition a glimpse into the future for each of these selected and important tropical crops.

Book Synopsis Tropical Plant Types by : B. G. M. Jamieson
Download or read book Tropical Plant Types written by B. G. M. Jamieson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Plant Types is a textbook dealing with bacteria and flowering plants of the tropics. It can be used along with books in tropical biology. The book first examines the simpler plant types known as unicellular or those consisting of a thallus. These organisms are the algae, fungi, lichens, bacteria, and some viruses. The text then describes the Bryophyta, the Pteridophyta, and the Spermatophyta. Compared to the others, the Spermatophyta or seed plants grow in wider range of territories and are the dominant land flora. The book then discusses the morphology of the Spermatophyta and their successful characteristics of survival. The book also analyzes the different plant parts, such as the root, the stem, the leaf, and the flower. A couple of chapters discuss pollination, fertilization, and the dispersal of seeds and fruits. The book then gives examples of tropical flower types, with some details on their distribution and morphology. The text also discusses perennial flowering plants, vegetation types, and plant communities found in tropical rain forests, in monsoon forests, and in the drier regions of the earth. The selection can serve as a textbook for pupils nearing the completion of their secondary education, freshmen university students, and for those who need to meet the requirements of the Cambridge Overseas Advanced Level Biology Examination.
