Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epoch in History It was the good fortune of the author to take part in a movement without precedent in the history of the world, and the incidents con current with, together with those subsequent to that movement, have furnished the material for this book. It has been the Object of the writer to weave into the story of his actual experiences an account of those things which are as yet an unexplored field in the realm of letters. The work is submitted to the reader in the hope that it willprove to be pregnant with interest to those who are in sympathy with great movements and to those who listen with delight to stories of per sonal experiences in distant lands and among strange peoples. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tennyson Epoch The series of which this volume is the ninth may he said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' In this volume, for reasons given in the Introduction, I have been compelled to include a period which really contains two epochs. My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. Also I avoid those works which are likely to be read elsewhere. For this reason Dickens, Thackeray, and the novelists generally, are here omitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jacksonian Epoch This book is an attempt to accomplish two objects: a critical survey of the political history of the United States, particularly in its parliamentary phase, from the Presidential candidacy of Jackson to the accession of Tyler, with a preliminary review of the preceding period beginning with the origin of the War of 1812; and to exhibit the influence of the men who shaped events. The first permits a rapid and independent treatment of the subject from a new point of view; and the second, the introduction of the personal element, which gives to history its keenest interest and its greatest charm. The epoch treated is the most suggestive and dramatic in our history. It marks the full development of American political methods, and possesses the most distinguished galaxy of public men ever brought together on the political scene in this country. General histories, however useful and excellent, subordinate men, and biographies either magnify individuals beyond their influence and importance, or do not adequately portray their contemporaries and the general perspective. This book, therefore, is an effort to combine and symmetrize both historical elements in order to present a true and lifelike picture of a most animated political epoch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Epoch of Alexander Hamilton: A Historical Study The writing of this book is the occupation of those days when I am freed from the performance of public duties. The labor is one in which I take delight, and is a source, during vacations, of happiness to me: may the book be one of pleas ure, if not enlightment, to others. Begun on the banks of the Hudson, I continue it here amid the beautiful and superb scenery near the upper Rhone: in that Switzerland to which Hamilton was prepared to emigrate if the revolutionary contest in America had resulted disastrously to the colonists. If this essay to relate the story of Hamilton's life, and to treat of the historical inducements to our national unity, should succeed in gaining the attention of American youth to the studious contemplation of one of the most eminent char acters of their own country, I will feel that I do not fail in another object which I have in View. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epochs of Modern History: The Epoch of Reform, 1830-50 The object of this little book is, in the first instance, to give a clear and concise account of the changes in our political system, from the introduction of Lord Grey's first Reform Bill to the death of Sir Robert Peel. That epoch of Reform encloses a group of constitutional changes so important as to entitle it to a distinct place in the history of England Lord Grey's Reform Bill established the basis of a popular suffrage, gave representation to the great industrial towns, and abolished many old standing anomalies and sources of corruption. The tithe system was brought to an end in Ireland. Slavery was banished from our colonies for ever. The working of women and children in mines and factories was placed under wholesome regulation. The foundation of a system of national education was laid. Our penal code was made human and reasonable. The com laws were repealed These changes, and others hardly less important, are the birth of that marvellous period of political activity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Periods of Universal History Prefatory remarks.-the fresh events just added to my Universal History are, though forcibly condensed into small compass, numerous, and full of interest and importance. Like Columbus, I have steered my bark through untraveled seas, having collected my facts mostly from newspapers and periodicals, including annals; but I have journeyed in the meantime in my own and in foreign countries, and have often enjoyed the privilege of conversing with the actors of the historic drama, or those personally acquainted with their deeds. The ability to trace great events to their true causes, cannot exist without previous familiarity with his tory; nor is this alone sufficient. And here it becomes no historian to presume on his own success, but humbly to await the award of his judges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of an Epoch It went into a legislative district where the popular senti ment was strongly Christian, strongly Republican, and strongly dry, and approached the dominant political leaders in private and the masses in public meetings, with substantially this proposi tion, This is a Republican district. You have the right to keep it so, if you can. But it is a dry district and entitled to a dry representative in the legislature. I have no purpose, or desire, to help the Democrats, as against you. But you must be fair to the dry sentiment. Nominate a dry Republican and if the oppo sitiou does the like, I keep hands off. If a wet Democrat is put up, I will support you with a corps of dry Democrats. On the other hand, if vou name a wet Republican against a dry Demo crat, I will support the Democrat with a battery of dry Republi can speakers and in time we will beat you. This is no threat. It is simply good politics for both parties in any case. Very soon, in multiplying districts, we had Republicans and Democrats competing for the dry support. Party lines grew dim as the light of Christian patriotism brightened, and Church lines disappeared altogether, as to Prohibition. The temperance socie ties ran together under the new leadership, as hope and the joy of clean conflict revived in the hearts of Christian voters. Small victories were consolidated into larger advances, local gains began to affect larger units and presently, State Legislatures took action and on the sixteenth of January, 1920, the clutch was shifted into high gear and the Church, with every cylinder hitting, was eating the road. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Civilization, Vol. 6 of 7 Thus it is that society, in all its different phases, reveals to the outward world what had its birth in the inward. All the inner promptings of our nature, all the thoughts, feelings, instincts, propensities, passions and sentiments, whose ceaseless action goes to make up the history Of our inner life, and which do not endanger the existence Of society itself, will, in some form or other, become revealed to the outward world under the auspices Of society. And this revelation, carefully noted, will, at any given epoch, constitute society a very excellent barometer, to determine what are the workings Of the inward man, what the then condition Of civilization itself.
