The general approach was to synthesize the macrocyclic ring C first and subsequently form the AB ring system via an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction. Although the reaction was found to proceed with high endo selectivity (25:1), subsequent nitrogen insertion was remarkably difficult to perform. Several nitrogen insertion methods were thoroughly pursued. The scope and limitations of these processes have been described herein."--Leaf ii.
