Book excerpt: Surfaces in 3D are often represented by polygonal meshes and point clouds obtained from 3D modeling tools or acquisition processes such as laser range scanning. While these formats are very flexible and allow the representation of a wide variety of shapes, they are rarely appropriate in their raw form for the range of applications that benefit from their use. Their decomposition into simpler constituting parts is referred to as shape segmentation, and its automation remains a challenging area within computer science.We will present and analyze different aspects of shape segmentation. We begin by looking at useful segmentation criteria and present a categorization of current methods according to which type of criteria they address, dividing them into affinity-based, model-fitting, and property-based approaches.We note within these approaches the variation in segmentations resulting from different criteria and propose a way to generalize the segmentation problem to heterogenous criteria. We introduce a framework and relevant algorithms for multi-objective segmentation of 3D shapes which allow for the incorporation of domain-specific knowledge through multiple objectives, each of which refers to one or more segmentation labels. They can assert properties of an individual part or they can refer to part interrelations. We thus cast the segmentation problem as an optimization minimizing an aggregate objective function which combines all objectives as a weighted sum.We conclude with a summary and discussion of the contributions presented, lessons learned, and a look at the open questions remaining and potential avenues of continued research.We then present two algorithmic contributions in the form of a model-based and a property-based segmentation approaches. These share the goals of automatically finding redundancy in a shape and propose shape representations that leverage this redundancy to achieve descriptive compactness. The first is a method for segmenting a surface into piece-wise ellipsoidal parts, motivated by the fact that most organic objects and many manufactured objects have large curved areas. The second is an algorithm for robustly detecting global and local planar-reflective symmetry and a hierarchical segmentation approach based on this detection method.

It is organized into three sections based on application: domain specific shape reconstruction (Chapter 2), general shape reconstruction (Chapter 3), and semantic segmentation (Chapter 4). In each chapter, we outline the setting and related work, and then introduce one or two approaches with a novel use of shape representation.Our key contribution is to use shape representation to enable new types of supervision and improve generalization when learning 3D priors. Because current reconstruction and segmentation methods share the use of learned 3D encoder and decoder architectures, these contributions apply to both tasks.In Chapters 2-4, we demonstrate experimentally that reconstruction and segmentation algorithms benefit from our choices of shape representation. A primary benefit of our approaches is enabling new types of supervision that require some property of the representation to be effective. Domain specific representation enables supervising 3D face reconstruction with a face recognition network for the first time, resulting in provably more recognizable reconstructions (Chapter 2). Our SIF representation learns shape correspondence from only reconstruction supervision (Chapter 3). Large, diverse image collections are already semantically labeled, making it possible to train 3D semantic segmentation models for datasets without point cloud annotations (Chapter 4).A secondary benefit is improved generalization, by deriving better priors from existing supervision. We propose a new shape representation, LDIF, which is trained on existing 3D reconstruction data. LDIF learns robust local priors, improving generalization to unseen classes and shapes (Chapter 3). The addition of image-based supervision in segmentation algorithms improves generalization to cities with no 3D supervision (Chapter 4).We conclude that our choices of representation enable new supervision, better generalization, and learning useful 3D priors from readily available labels (e.g., labeled and unlabeled images, or unlabeled shape collections). We hypothesize that effective future representations will build on this trend by deriving higher level semantic priors from unannotated datasets and other inexpensive sources of supervision (Chapter 5).

Book excerpt: With increasing amounts of data describing 3d shapes, geometry processing is becoming extremely important in fields ranging from computer graphics to robotics to medicine to computational biology. A fundamental task in geometry processing is to segment shapes into meaningful parts. Segmentation assists global parameterization, compression, animation and more. Moreover, it is crucial to shape understanding and semantics based object representations, which rely on feature extraction and structure extraction from 3d meshes that represent these objects and shapes. This thesis aims to advance shape segmentation techniques in three directions: joint segmentation of a collection of shapes, segmentation of repeated elements on curved surfaces, and vector field based segmentation. First, we present an approach to segmenting shapes in a heterogenous shape database. By considering multiple shapes in concert, our approach is able to identify meaningful parts despite the lack of strong geometric cues on a particular shape. Likewise, the approach is able to identify coherent single parts even when the geometry of the individual shape suggests the presence of multiple segments. The approach is entirely unsupervised and is based on an integer quadratic programming formulation of the joint segmentation problem. The program optimizes over possible segmentations of individual shapes as well as over possible correspondences between segments from multiple shapes. The integer quadratic program is solved via a linear programming relaxation, using a block coordinate descent procedure that makes the optimization feasible for large databases. We evaluate the presented approach on the Princeton segmentation benchmark and show that joint shape segmentation significantly outperforms single-shape segmentation techniques. Near-regular structures are common in man-made and natural objects. The second approach targets at segmenting the repeating elements of a near-regular structure on a curved surface. The approach proceeds in two steps. In the first step, it computes a near-regular mesh which represents the skeleton of the underlying near-regular structure. We present a sparse integer programming formulation to this problem whose linearized program is both tight and can be efficiently solved. In the second step, the approach segments the repeating elements through consistent region growing, starting at vertices of the near-regular mesh. Finally, we introduce vector-field based shape segmentation, which builds on the dual relationship between generalized Killing vector fields and segmentations. This approach allows us to control segmentations by designing appropriate Killing vector fields. It also features a low dimensional design space and interactive vector field editing. We show the application of this approach in interactive macro-patch segmentation for designing geodesic patterns.
