Book Synopsis Pedagogies of the Imagination by : Timothy Leonard
Download or read book Pedagogies of the Imagination written by Timothy Leonard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have long admired the mythopoetic tradition in curriculum studies. That admiration followed from my experience as a high-school teacher of English in a wealthy suburb of New York City at the end of the 1960s. A “dream” job—I taught four classes of 15–20 students during a nine-period day—in a “dream” suburb (where I could afford to reside only by taking a room in a retired teacher’s house), many of these often Ivy-League-bound students had everything but meaningful lives. This middle-class, Midwestern young teacher was flabbergasted. In one sense, my academic life has been devoted to understanding that searing experience. Matters of meaning seemed paramount in the curriculum field to which Paul Klohr introduced me at Ohio State. Klohr assigned me the work of curriculum theorists such as James B. Macdonald. Like Timothy Leonard (who also studied with Klohr at Ohio State) and Peter Willis, Macdonald (1995) understood that school reform was part of a broader cultural and political crisis in which meaning is but one casualty. In the mythopoetic tradition in curriculum studies, scholars labor to understand this crisis and the conditions for the reconstruction of me- ing in our time, in our schools.

Download or read book Diagnostic Criteria in Neurology written by Alan J. Lerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compendium of the latest published diagnostic criteria for a diverse group of neurological conditions. The criteria cover a wide spectrum of neurological conditions whose diagnosis does not depend solely on histopathology (e.g., brain tumors), including cerebrovascular diseases, dementias and behavioral disorders, demyelinating disorders, and disorders of consciousness and brain death. Standardized criteria are also provided for epilepsy, genetic syndromes, headache, immune-based disorders, infectious diseases, movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and sleep disorders. A dazzling array of tables summarizes useful information on both common and uncommon neurological conditions, including many genetic and pediatric neurological disorders. Innovative and authoritative, Diagnostic Criteria in Neurology begins to do for neurology what the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) did for psychiatry.

Book Synopsis Ernst Mach: Physicist and Philosopher by : Robert S. Cohen
Download or read book Ernst Mach: Physicist and Philosopher written by Robert S. Cohen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1975-12-31 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C., 27 December 1966, a symposium was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernst Mach, the physicist who was vitally concerned about philosophical foundations. It was arranged by Section B on Physics, and co-sponsored by Section L on the History and Philosophy of Science, as well as by the History of Science Society. Dr. Allen W. Astin, Vice-President of the Association and Director of the National Bureau of Standards, presided. Representing the Austrian ambassador, Dr. Ernst Lemberger, a few opening remarks on his behalf were made by Dr. Walter Hietsch. Also present was Dr. Ernest A. Lederer, a grandson of Ernst Mach. The contributors, to the symposium, mostly physicists, represented different backgrounds and differing points of view; they presented their review of Mach's work primarily in the light of subsequent developments. They all, however, share a common interest in the life and works of Ernst Mach. Two of them, Otto BlUh and Peter G. Bergmann, received their doctoral degrees in theoretical physics from the University of Prague. Karl Menger received his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Vienna (he is responsible for the latest edition [1960] of Mach's celebrated The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of its Development, for which he prepared a new Introduction).

Book Synopsis The Quest for Peace Through Diplomacy by : Stephen Denis Kertesz
Download or read book The Quest for Peace Through Diplomacy written by Stephen Denis Kertesz and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The new twentieth-century world, heralded by the advent of sophisticated weapons systems and uneasy superpowers, calls for a new twentieth-century diplomacy, writes Stephen D. Kertesz in THE QUEST FOR PEACE THROUGH DIPLOMACY. After analyzing the past successes and failures of diplomacy in dealing with major international crises ranging from the rise of self-seeking nation-states in the fifteenth century to the rise of nuclear powers in the twentieth, Kertesz focuses closely on a new form of diplomacy - the use of large multi-national organizations, such as the United Nations, whose major task is to keep the globe from splitting asunder. The only world community that exists today is a community of fear in the face of possible thermonuclear annihilation, observes the author. Yet there are unique opportunities for achieving cooperation through regional organizations such as the European Economic Community, he maintains, and even the possibility of a future expansion of the present Atlantic partnership into a new political community that would include an Atlantic Assembly, an Atlantic Political Authority, and an Atlantic system of international courts. However discouraging the historical difficulties and current frustrations, we must not neglect these opportunities to adapt our traditional techniques of diplomacy and international relations to the demands of a rapidly changing world, Kertesz maintains. For in the treacherous closing decades of the twientieth century the quest for peace and the quest for survival have become one." - Publisher.
