And she had carefully dusted off her new black sneakers. Heart hung her head, her eyes sweeping down over herself. She was hurt, mystified, and then horrified! Where the light from Word struck her clothes, it showed how dirty they really were and even had holes. When his light touched her fruit, it appeared brown and spoiled, emitting an unpleasant smell. Word slowly closed the heavy gate. Wiping the tears from her eyes and biting her lip to keep it from trembling, Heart turned and walked over to a nearby tree. She could hold back no longer. Dumping her spoiled, worthless fruit on the ground, she burst out sobbing. What could have gone wrong? She had tried so hard! Never had she expected to fail so miserably.

Book excerpt: “[A] smart yet tender tale. . . . Sometimes heartbreaking, often hilarious . . . one of the finest food memoirs of recent years.” —The New York Times Book Review For a woman raised by a weight-obsessed mother and a father who rebelled by sneaking his daughter out to lavish meals at such fine dining establishments as Le Pavillon and La Grenouille, food could be a fraught proposition. Not that this stopped Elissa Altman from pursuing a culinary career. Everything Elissa cooked was inspired by the French haute cuisine she once secretly enjoyed with her dad, from the rare game birds she served at extravagant dinner parties held in her tiny New York City apartment to the eight timbale molds she purchased from Dean & Deluca, just so she could make her food tall. All that elegance was called into question when Elissa fell in love with Susan, a small-town woman whose idea of fine dining was a rustic meal served on her best tag sale TV tray. Susan’s devotion to simple living astounded Elissa, even as it changed the way she thought about food—and the family who taught her everything she understood about it—forever. Based on the James Beard Award–winning blog and filled with twenty-six delicious recipes, Poor Man’s Feast is one woman’s achingly honest, often uproarious journey to making peace with food and finding lasting love. “A brave, generous story about family, food, and finding the way home.” —Molly Wizenberg, New York Times–bestselling author of A Homemade Life “Luminous writing.” —Publishers Weekly “Reminiscent of Elizabeth David, M. F. K. Fisher, A. J. Liebling . . . reflective of Laurie Colwin and her praise of simple, home-cooked, ‘real’ food.” —New York Journal of Books “A beautiful story.” —Deborah Madison, James Beard Award–winning author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone

Book excerpt: Annual collection on diverse aspects of the fifteenth century, emphasizing literary topics with essays on French, German, English, Gaelic, and Middle Scots. The fifteenth century defies consensus on fundamental issues; most scholars agree, however, that the period outgrew the Middle Ages, that it was a time of transition and a passage to modern times. Fifteenth-Century Studiesoffers essays on diverse aspects of the period, including liberal and fine arts, historiography, medicine, and religion. Volume 37 includes articles on René d'Anjou and authorial doubling in the Livre du Coeur d'Amour épris; tradition and innovation in popular German song poetry from Oswald von Wolkenstein to Georg Forster; the role of sacred images in Capgrave's Life of Saint Katherine; milieu, John Strecche, and the Gawain-poet; Gaelic, Middle Scots, and the question of ethnicity in three Scottish flytings; William Caxton's translations of Aesop; the visualization of information in Conrad Buitzruss's compendium; and Gilles de Rais and his modern apologists. Book reviews conclude the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barton Freidman demonstrates that, as a cycle, the Cuchulain plays form a paradigm of Yeats's dramatic career. They trace his progress, the author contends, toward finding a genuine dramatic mode, and examination of this process reveals much about a playwright whose work is simultaneously great literature and extaordinarily effective theater. In his interpretation of the Cuchulain cycle the author concentrates upon dramatic method. He examines first the evolution of Yeats's dramatic aesthetic and his attempts to translate it into practice. He then treats each play of the cycle in order of composition, moving from On Baile's Strand, of which the first version was begun in 1901, to The Death of Cuchulain completed in 1939. Deirdre is included, since it demonstrably belongs to the cycle. Professor Freidman discusses not only the plays in their final form but, in crucial instances, Yeats's revisions of them, which frequently illuminate his dramatic designs. In the cases of The Green Helmet and The Only Jealous of Emer, he considers as well as their alternative versions, The Golden Helmet and Fighting the Waves. The analysis draws on Yeats's poetry and his theories of history, mythology, and art, and it shows that Yeats succeeds where his Romantic precursors had failed, in finding ways of staging "the deeps of the mind." Barton R. Friedman is Associate Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin. Originally published in 1977. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine living in a God-created heart in the world of your imagination. Imagine living in a world where the Holy Spirit, seen allegorically in the person of the beautiful patience of Christian Nature, lovingly and tenderly seeks to fill every nook and cranny of your heart with the beauty that only the Holy Spirit through Christian Nature can provide. Imagine living in a world where each citizen, like a cherished and highly valued goblet, is filled to overflowing with enchanted golden drops of comfort to freely pour upon everyone whom their lives may touch. Imagine living in a world where each citizen places their cup filled with goodness to the parched, dry lips of the weary traveler who has not tasted the refreshing drops of kindness for a long time and, in so doing, restoring life to that previously hardened person who was on the verge of losing his life to a thirst for goodness in a hardened world. Is this the kind of world in which you would like to live? Sounds nice, you may say. But this is not real life! The purpose of this literary endeavor, the reason for this story, is to reveal to each reader that this world is real. It really does exist! It exists in our own God-created heart; and the Holy Spirit, who has filled it with the beauty of Christian Nature, lovingly invites you to live here as a cherished citizen for all the days of the enchanted adventure of your life!
