Book excerpt: Log suites recorded in empty and liquid-filled boreholes have been analyzed from a total of seven wells in three states in the Appalachian Basin. Several techniques were attempted to identify gas and kerogen rich and naturally fractured intervals, including construction of resistivity and porosity overlays, calculation of Production Indices, analysis of temperature, bulk density compensation and Sibilation curves. The information extracted from the logs was compared to conventional core desorption (offgas), fracture and geochemical data as well as to computer-generated synergetic logs. A suite of empty borehole logs has been defined which will yield maximum formation evaluation data at a minimum cost.

The plan consists of evaluating three wells in Pike County, Kentucky. The log analysis results and the plan for determining reservoir permeability from core analysis and well tests are presented. The objective is to develop a log based method for determining shale permeability.

Book excerpt: This report presents the application of the "Devonian Shale-specific Formation Evaluation Model" for the evaluation of geophysical well logs in the Devonian shale. A procedure is outlined for determining lithology, porosity and bulk volume free-hydrocarbon. The logging suite commonly utilized by ResTech for evaluation of the shales is presented. However, methods have been developed for obtaining reliable results in certain areas with a reduced logging suite. The final report from an analysis includes a written document containing recommended completion intervals and perforations. Also included within the report are the results presented in both a log and listed format. The log format has an 11" and 22" presentation. In addition to lithology, porosity and bulk volume free-hydrocarbon is presented on the 11" presentation, results from the borehole television, temperature survey and mudlog are displayed on the 22" wide presentation.

This program aids producers in the collection of reservoir data not normally collected and assists in the evaluation of the effectiveness of zone selection, stimulation designs and methods. This study should provide a better understanding of the relationships which affect productivity in the Devonian shale. The relationships between gas flows and geological features which control the production characteristics in the Devonian shale are being developed. A detailed logging, coring and well testing program is being conducted on twenty-eight newly drilled wells in three areas of the Appalachian Basin. Production and borehole TV surveys are being conducted on certain existing and newly drilled wells. Zones of gas entry are being identified. The geology and reservoir characteristics of the wells are being determined through the analyses of geophysical logs, borehole TV, and surface well testing data. Preferred wells for study are those with single zone well completions stimulated by hydraulic fracturing techniques. Stimulation techniques, selected by the respective producers, are being evaluated using a prescribed well test analysis procedure to determine their effectiveness.

Book excerpt: Efficient exploitation of natural gas from the Devonian shales of the Appalachian Basin is limited by the inability to accurately identify reservoir properties associated with lithologic and stratigraphic characteristics and to use commonly available gamma ray and density logs for lithologic assessment. A thorough understanding of the Upper Devonian stratigraphic section, depositional environment, and depositional geometries should assist in exploration and completion interval selection. For this reason, an investigation was made of production data and nearly 500 feet of core from four GRI Comprehensive Study Wells. Siltstone and black-shale intervals, in conjunction with natural fracures, appear to control reservoir occurrence in specific parts of the basin. Numerical methods for log normalizing and computation of lithologies based on the CSW cores, compiled into a comuter program included with this report, should aid in the correlation of stratigraphic units and reconstruction of depositional geometries critical to exploration methods.
