Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the current status of the athletic medicine unit (AMU) in Georgia high schools. An online questionnaire was sent to 432 public and private schools in Georgia, and 109 (25.2% return rate) were completed. The responding schools included 86 public schools and 23 private schools. Results revealed that 54.6% of schools had a team physician with the most common specialty being an orthopedist. Also, 62.6% of the schools had a certified athletic trainer (ATC) with 37.3% being employed by the school. For those schools without an ATC, 70.0% of coaches were providing immediate care for athletes. Significant differences were observed among classifications of schools for the coverage provided to athletes with lower classifications less likely to have a complete AMU. Further study assessing the AMU in Georgia high schools should include an outcome assessment to determine the cost effectiveness of the AMU.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship of size, wealth, and district type to athletic success and found that wealth and size were important predictors of athletic performance. The relationship of these variables to performance was anticipated in a theory of differentiation propounded by Blau and Schoenerr (1971). The authors theorized that increases in organizational size would be accompanied by increases in specialization, that is, the unique skills possessed by organizational incumbents and thus foster success. Data describing school size, wealth, district type, number of coaches, and athletic success were gathered. Success was defined as the points garnered in the Georgia Athletic Directors Association's Regions Directors Cup race. The independent variables were measured as student enrollment for size, the percentage of Free and Reduced Lunch for wealth, and proximity to urban centers for district type. Because schools in Georgia are classified by size, the hypothesis that wealth, size, and district type would predict athletic success was tested in each of the five divisions. Size and wealth individually were positively correlated with athletic performance in all divisions. District type had no effect on athletic performance. All relationships were tested in five divisions comprising 376 secondary public schools, a sample of virtually every public high school in Georgia. When athletic performance was regressed on the independent variables, wealth made a significant contribution in each division. When controlling for wealth and district type, size made a significant contribution in the smallest school division and the largest school division. When the coaches were added to the set of independent variables, the number of coaches made a significant contribution to athletic success in all the divisions. Although not hypothesized, size and wealth made contributions to academic performance that mirrored their relationship in athletic performances. Theoretically, the study confirms the importance of wealth and size. However, if the idea of different divisions is to level the playing field in competitive athletics then this finding presents some practical challenges to sports officials.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In this study, I write about the emotional journey of high school athletic coaches’ experiences as they move through their day as teachers, coaches, and spouses/parents. The examination of the emotions and transitions high school coaches experience has been largely unresearched. There have been examinations of teachers, the impact coaches have on athletes, and a coach as a parent, but there is not extensive research on all three roles experienced by one person. High school athletics is a tremendous part of high school, and coaches have a tremendous impact not only on their players, but on the students they teach in the classroom as well. Coaches are often more visible and identifiable than the administration. As high school athletics continues to garner societal attention, it is imperative the motivations, emotions and conflicts coaches experience are examined within the three roles in order to understand how they handle this dynamic role transition. Using various frameworks and literature reviews, this study examines the emotions, transitions, motivations, and challenges high school athletic coaches experience. Three male coaches and their spouses were interviewed for this study. In addition, my own autobiographical stories and experiences are also weaved throughout each chapter. Some of the themes that emerged through the examination of each role include emotional regulation, learning through play, role conflict, workaholism, and work-family conflict. These themes indicate the role transitions high school athletic coaches experience are complicated and different for each coach.. The interviews also revealed the commitment to their role as a teacher, coach, and spouse are incredibly strong and without that commitment, they would not be able to continuously navigate the dynamic role transitions necessary to be a high school athletic coach. Many scholarly works were utilized throughout this research including Immanuel Kant (1908/2015), Nel Noddings (2002 and 2005), Sonya Nieto (2005), Jennifer Welborn (2005), Sam Intrator (2003), William Ayers (2010), and Erin Rooney (2015), Paul Wright and David Walsh (2015), Michael Coffino (2018), Michael Miragiuolo (2014), and Jeffery Graham and Marlene Dixon (2014).
