Book excerpt: Purpose of the study . The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the following question: "What affect do career education activities have on coursework decisions made by secondary students?" Procedures . This study utilized the PLAN assessment, a standardized instrument that is norm referenced and produced by the American College Testing Program. The study included information in the student's various career portfolios that identified exploration activities the student experienced during his/her middle school and early high school years along with selecting a career pathway of interest. The student's high school transcript was reviewed which identified technical courses he/she had taken during his/her freshman and/or sophomore year. Pre-enrollment rosters identified the courses students would like to take during his/her junior year at Lake Career & Technical Center. Three hundred Camdenton High School sophomores were the population with approximately 95% in the sample. Data were analyzed utilizing SPSS software. The Chi-Square method, t test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were used for the analysis of the data. Findings and conclusions . A positive relationship was found among three of the six hypotheses posed. There is a positive relationship between: students PLAN World-of-Work Map Region and the selected career path; students PLAN World-of-Work Map Region and enrollment in a technical course; and the selected career path and enrollment in a technical course. No significant relationship was found when comparing career exploration activities and enrollment in a related technical course. The final two scenarios identified a significant difference between career education activities and the coursework decisions that students made between mean PLAN ACT Composite Scores for students enrolled in and not enrolled in a technical course and among PLAN ACT Composite Scores of students within selected career pathways as measured by the World-of-Work Map Region. The final conclusion is that career exploration activities do have a slightly positive impact on the coursework decisions made by secondary students.

Book excerpt: Abstract: With the phenomenal growth of community service opportunities in U.S. high schools and higher education institutions from the 1990s, there is also a growing body of research evidence documenting the positive influences of community service on its participants' cognitive, psychosocial and moral development. The student outcome of particular interest to the present study is post-college career choice, which has never been examined within an explicit theoretical framework despite the significant findings from a few empirical studies. There are also nontrivial methodological limitations among prior studies, such as the use of career plan as a proxy for actual occupations entered, the neglect of academic disciplines as a source of influence on career choice, and so on. Built upon both developmental and socialization theories, the current study seeks to understand the unique impact of community service participation on the choice of service-related careers after college, when personality types and important environmental factors are controlled for their influences. It incorporates data from the base-year and four follow-up surveys of the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS:88), which provide nationally representative information about the original 8th grade cohort's involvement in community service and their development from high school through college and post-college years. Results from logistic regression analyses suggest that it is continuous volunteering from high school to college, rather than volunteering in college alone, that increases the likelihood of college graduates with non-Social personality preferences to pursue service-related careers. Moreover, there are significant gender and personality differences in terms of the impact of community service on post-college career choice, as indicated by the results of separate analyses on the subgroups of the sample. The present study both contributes to theoretical knowledge about the socialization dynamics of community service, and to empirical studies of college impact on career outcomes. Importance of the study and implications for future research and policy are also discussed.
