Book Synopsis Holistic Religious Education - is it possible? by : Sturla Sagberg
Download or read book Holistic Religious Education - is it possible? written by Sturla Sagberg and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the possibility of a holistic approach to religious education, taking into account religious and cultural diversity, different aspects of secularisation and different academic disciplines that inform the subject. Issues discussed are the view of children as spiritual and religious subjects, identity formation, the concept of child theology, the relationship between faith and morality, the meaning of spirituality, the notion of wonder as an inroad to learning, religion as culture, and the meaning of holism. A point of departure is taken in a typology of attitudes to religion in public education, and the line of reason ends in a search for viable metaphors for holistic religious education. Sturla Sagberg (born 1951) is professor of religious education and ethics at Queen Maud University College of Early Childhood Education in Trondhem, Norway. He has a doctoral degree in theology, and has for many decades taught and done research related to teacher training as well as to church education. He has published several books in Norwegian, of which the latest translates into Religion, Values and Formation: Children and the big questions in life. Many of his articles in books and journals are written in English.

Book Synopsis Righteous Religion by : Kathleen Ritter
Download or read book Righteous Religion written by Kathleen Ritter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are so many individuals discouraged, at spiritual dead ends, even when they are active participants in their churches? Righteous Religion exposes the authoritarian misuse of Christian teaching that often leaves its members ignored, chastised, or belittled. This new book offers hope for anyone who has struggled with disillusionment in the face of an unbending religious system. After unmasking a bewildering network of illusions that operate beneath the surface of Fundamentalism and dogmatic Catholicism, the authors help readers find their own voices of truth. This is a candid book that analyzes the grip of Fundamentalism and Catholicism on their respective followers, despite financial and sexual scandals, misuse of power and influence, apparent hypocrisy, and selective self-righteousness of these two religious systems. Using real life stories of ordinary people in ordinary churches, Righteous Religion demonstrates that the efforts involved in maintaining illusions are incompatible with claiming a personal spiritual voice. The authors discuss the relationship between the breakdown of erroneous notions and the growth that will involve readers in finding their own voice. From the stories presented, readers will see the journey progress from questioning previously unquestioned assumptions, reclaiming the best out of their religious traditions, and then transcending that which is no longer viable by grieving over illusions, learning to live with paradox, and transforming illusions into a new, valid, and spiritually personal religious truth. As readers begin the journey of finding their own spiritual voice, their experiences will be validated by the prose and stories in Righteous Religion. Those outside of Fundamentalism and Catholicism can begin to understand the practices of these religious groups through the authors’clear explanation of the dynamics and inner workings of creed bound Fundamentalism and Catholicism. This book has appeal to anyone--whether from within or outside religious tradition--who has questioned the grip of Fundamentalism and Catholicism on individuals.

Book excerpt: The Best Nonfiction Masterpiece of the 20th Century? “There are two lives, the natural and the spiritual, and we must lose the one before we can participate in the other.” - William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature is not a book about a specific religion. The author, psychologist Williams James does not try to convince the reader one religion is better than the other. He doesn’t even make a case for atheism and the scientific approach. The book is in fact about human nature and how we experience religion at a psychological level. Xist Publishing is a digital-first publisher. Book Synopsis Vision and Character by : Craig Dykstra
Download or read book Vision and Character written by Craig Dykstra and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-07-22 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Craig Dykstra has done it: he has written a readable, engaging book which does justice to the complex texture of moral existence as we experience it. His exposition shows the real but limited usefulness of cognitive theories of moral development and education. In a simple, penetrating prose, rich in narrative quality, he sets forth an account of visional ethics and a corresponding ethics of character. After helping us see clearly what moral growth means, he offers one of the most truly humane and inspiring approaches to Christian moral education you will encounter. This is a superb book for any thoughtful reader. No professional in ministry or religious education can afford to be without it."" --James W. Fowler, Emory University ""For Christian educators this book is going to mark the end of the Lawrence Kohlberg era in moral education and open up a fresh understanding of how repentance, prayer, and service nourishes moral development."" --C. Ellis Nelson, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary ""Dykstra emphasizes the formative role of revelation and imagination, of the spirit of repentance, prayer, and service, as well as the intentional direction of the Church community and the teacher in the dynamic of Christian education. Drawing on insights from literature, psychology, and experience, his work is at once informative and inspirational."" --Berard L. Marthaler, Catholic University of America ""Vision and Character is a book for which I have been waiting and longing. Character, value, and moral education have long been concerns of religious educators. Today's literature is dominated by developmentalism and the work of Kohlberg. . . . Here, at last, in this thoughtful, readable, useful book is a true alternative. Dykstra has provided us with the best foundation for Christian moral education to date."" --John H. Westerhoff III, Duke University ""Dykstra is one of today's new group of brilliant young Christian education thinkers, and this is his first book. Dykstra is a person to hear carefully both now and in the future."" --D. Campbell Wyckoff, Princeton Theological Seminary Craig Dykstra is Vice President for Religion for the Lilly Endowment, Inc. He previously taught Christian education at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (1977-84) and served as Thomas W. Synnott Professor of Christian Education at Princeton Theological Seminary (1984-89), where he was also editor of the journal Theology Today. An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Dykstra is a graduate of the University of Michigan (BA) and Princeton Seminary (MDiv, PhD). Dykstra is also the author of Growing in the Life of Faith: Education and Christian Practices (1999, 2005), and has published over 100 monographs, chapters of books, articles, editorials, and other commentaries.

Book excerpt: In this study, first published in 1965, the author explores the implications of research for an alternative approach to religious education. The book deals with the psychological bases of religious development, reviewing the natural limitations as well as the basic needs of the young, and how religious education should be affected by educational theory and practice. The author also examines what content and methods of teaching are consistent with the healthy development of children and adolescents. Teachers in schools, students in training, lecturers, clergy and ministers, and local education authority committees will welcome the book as an important aid to the task of rethinking syllabuses and the need for more child-centred methods of teaching.

Book Synopsis Psychological and Religious Development by : Charles C. L. Kao
Download or read book Psychological and Religious Development written by Charles C. L. Kao and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has come out of nearly a decade of personal interviews, biographical analysis, and literature survey in related fields. It attempts to present a comprehensive picture of human growth with depth and perceptive insight, (which may stimulate some psychologists and social scientists toward formulating new hypothesis in their empirical study). By integrating theories from the literature survey and critical reflection on the study with the concrete life experiences from personal interviews and biographies, I wish to present a thorough picture of maturity and maturation to the reader with the hope that he or she may be engaged in pushing our present culture to a more mature stage.
