Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of incongruence (mismatch) between neighborhood and school racial/ethnic composition on middle school students' experiences with teacher-and-peer-initiated discrimination. The subsample of 1,289 students (44% Latino, 26% White, 14% Black, and 16% Asian) comes from a larger longitudinal study of 26 ethnically diverse middle schools and over 300 neighborhoods that vary in ethnic diversity. This study relies on students' self-reports of perceived discrimination and school demographic data from the California Department of Education. Student home addresses were geocoded using Geographic Information Systems, ArcGIS 10.1, and then matched to demographic data obtained from American FactFinder. Neighborhood-school incongruence scores were calculated by subtracting the proportion of same-ethnicity peers in the school from the proportion of same-ethnicity residents in the neighborhood. Overall, our results suggest that neighborhood-school incongruence affects students' perceptions of teacher-and-peer-initiated racial/ethnic discrimination differently depending on students' racial/ethnic group and gender. Results from multilevel models show that there was a three-way interaction, such that race/ethnicity and gender moderated the association between neighborhood-school incongruence and teacher-and-peer-initiated discrimination. These findings emphasize the importance of examining both the neighborhood and school contexts in understanding students' experiences with racial/ethnic discrimination.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the perceived presence of racial disparities that may exist in the education system and uncover student perceptions of racism throughout each of their respective educational careers. It also brought to light student perceptions of the phenomenon and informed educators and education systems about changes that can be made so that each student can experience success at an equitable rate. Specifically, gaps between African American, Hispanic, and White students were examined. These gaps exist nationwide, but gaps particular to the author’s unique context were explicated. A study to deepen the understanding of students’ perceptions and personal experiences of racism throughout their respective educational experiences was conducted. The current study utilized a phenomenological analysis of interviews with the people most often left out of educational research, practice, and policy: the students, themselves. The findings of this investigation and their implications are critical to ensure future endeavors toward equity are more effective than they have been in the past. Among them, African American and Hispanic students perceived inequitable treatments in academic and behavioral contexts. Themes also suggested the prevalence of racism and its effects on education at both the individual and systemic levels. Suggestions for educators and education systems include continuing efforts to racially diversify not only the student body, but also the school staff. Themes also suggested African American and Hispanic students would benefit immensely from additional supports in the forms of resources, mentors, academic assistance, holistic wellness programs, and social-emotional initiatives. Recommendations for further research are also included.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the Spanish-speaking newcomer middle school students' perceptions of school, expectations from school, and attitudes toward school. Of particular concern was how these students' perceptions, expectations, and attitudes developed over a 5-month period. The theoretical framework for the study was derived from Vygotsky's (1978) sociocultural theory; second language acquisition (SLA) theories (Dulay & Burt, 1973; Krashen, 1982; Johnson, 1996; Long, 1985; Schumann, 1978); and Norton's (1997) theory of identity, investment, and imagined communities. The participants in this study were 4 Spanish-speaking middle school students enrolled in an Intensive English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class for students who have recently arrived in the United States, their parents, and the teacher-researcher. The study took place during the 2006-2007 school year at a diverse metropolitan city in the southeast region of the United States. Data sources included student and parent tape-recorded oral interviews, informal interviews, field notes, ethnographic participant observations, field notes, and a researcher journal. Through constant comparative analysis (Creswell, 2006), data were analyzed for themes relating to students' perceptions, expectations, and attitudes. These themes were analyzed using the sociocultural and SLA frameworks. The analysis of the findings indicated that most participants entered U.S. schools with preexisting positive perceptions about school and that they maintained these positive perceptions during the time of the study. The data revealed that the participants had high expectations from school and overall positive attitudes toward school. An analysis of the data demonstrated that the participants' new school environment was a critical factor in their perceptions, expectations, and attitudes. Implications of the study include the importance of honoring students' culture, previous learning experiences, and language abilities in order to facilitate SLA, literacy development, and teacher-student relationship development.

This study also aimed to understand how African American and Latino middle school students mediate teacher expectations of them. Previous studies have sought to understand the connection between teacher expectations and student academic performance. Previous studies have mostly situated the studies around elementary or high school students with few focusing on middle school students. Previous research has also been conducted using mostly teacher narrative or observation about expectations. In order to shift focus to middle school and student narrative, this study was designed around the following research questions: (1) In what ways do African American and Latino middle school students make meaning of their educational experience? (2) In what ways do African American and Latino middle school students mediate teacher expectations of their learning? This study was conducted using a qualitative research design. The data source used for this study were student interviews of African American and Latino middle school students. The interviews were transcribed and data was analyzed through an exhaustive coding process. The results of the data analysis yielded four themes that answered the research questions. Those themes were: (1) student-teacher relationships; (2) class environment; (3) pedagogy; (4) race. These themes had the greatest impact on how African American and Latino middle school student make meaning of their educational experience, and also had impact on how they interpreted teacher expectations of them. The results of this study suggest that there is a need for more attention to student voice in middle school professional development and teacher education programs. The contribution of student voice from this study also makes clear a need for more opportunity and work on reflection about student-teacher relationships at the middle school level. In addition to suggestions for educational practice, the understanding from this study highlights other areas that could be explored in future studies. Since the goal of this study was not generalization of the results, a mixed-methods study that has a larger sample size would produce results that could be more generalizable. In addition, future studies could focus on how expectations are formed and interpreted by middle school students and teachers.

Moreover, Latino/a students have been shown to have increased concern for dropping out, and for not believing they can achieve positive career outcomes (Pew Hispanic Center Report, 2009). As a result of these concerns in this increasing population, it is important to further explore the career-related concerns, specifically supports and barriers, among Latino/a students. The present study utilized qualitative interviews as a means of gaining a greater understanding of how rural middle school Latino/a students perceive their futures, including supportive factors to their career development, as well as barriers that may impede them from achieving their career goals. The data were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (Hill, 2012). Results indicate that while students perceived potential barriers in their future, they also believed that they would be able to pursue and achieve their desired futures, and were able to generate individuals and resources that could help them to do so. These findings contrast previous research regarding Latino/a career development, and also highlight the potential importance of career interventions for rural Latino/a youth.

This study determined what role social, emotional, physical, andacademic variables have in the transition process from elementary school to middle school for African American males. The two guiding questions for this mixed methods study were: 1. What are African American male students' perceptions of personal development variables on their transition from elementary school to middle school? 2. How do African American male students describe their transitional experience from elementary school to middle school? Participants in this study were 149 African American male students from five middle schools in southeast Texas. Findings of the study were derived from the use of a self-developed 52-item questionnaire (Student Transition Perception Survey) with one free response question and interviews of ten students (two from each school). The major findings in this study were: 1. Social variable - African American male students felt that schools did not provide a positive school climate, teachers did not treat them with respect, and their parents were supportive of their education. 2. Emotional variable - African American male students felt that schools did not make them feel successful, and they did not feel equal to their peers. 3. Physical variable - African American male students were equally divided in the acceptance of their physical appearance and when they compared themselves to others. 4. Academic variable - African American male students felt that teachers did not give them valuable attention in class. 5. When looking at the trend of student responses among the five schools, African American male students shared similar feelings about the social, emotional, physical, and academic variables. 6. African American male students expressed their feelings about being unsafe, experiencing differentiated teacher treatment, declining grades, and difficulty in their middle school transition.

Relatively few studies have investigated school characteristics that may serve as antecedents of perceived discrimination toward Black students. Even less is known about how individual differences may interact with school characteristics to influence Black students' perceptions of discrimination. The current study examined the role of individual student and school variables as predictors of Black middle school students' perceived discrimination experiences, defined as racial hassles. The moderating role of racial identity processes was also examined. Analyses for the current study focused on 135 Black adolescents, who were recruited for the Temple University Adolescent Cognition and Emotion (ACE) Project at approximately 12 years of age, and for whom school-level data were available. Correlational and linear regression analyses indicated that school characteristics were unrelated to perceptions of discrimination. Racial identity processes did not moderate the relationship between school racial composition and perceived discrimination. Male and female students reported no differences in either perceived discrimination or reported bothersomeness. Most participants, regardless of school context, reported some discrimination. In conclusion, this study suggests that Black early adolescents perceived racial discrimination irrespective of school racial composition, school quality, and school size. Directions for future research are discussed.
