Download or read book People Like Us written by Sayu Bhojwani and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring story of political newcomers (sometimes also newcomers to America) who are knocking down built-in barriers to creating better government The system is rigged: America's political leadership remains overwhelmingly white, male, moneyed, and Christian. Even at the local and state levels, elected office is inaccessible to the people it aims to represent. But in People Like Us, political scientist Sayu Bhojwani shares the stories of a diverse and persevering range of local and state politicians from across the country who are challenging the status quo, winning against all odds, and leaving a path for others to follow in their wake. In Anaheim, California, a previously undocumented Mexican American challenges the high-powered interests of the Disney Corporation to win a city council seat. In the Midwest, a thirty-something Muslim Somali American unseats a forty-four-year incumbent in the Minnesota house of representatives. These are some of the foreign-born, lower-income, and of-color Americans who have successfully taken on leadership roles in elected office despite xenophobia, political gatekeeping, and personal financial concerns. In accessible prose, Bhojwani shines a light on the political, systemic, and cultural roadblocks that prevent government from effectively representing a rapidly changing America, and offers forward-thinking solutions on how to get rid of them. People Like Us serves as a road map for the burgeoning democracy that has been a long time in the making: inclusive, multiracial, and unstoppable.

Download or read book VIZIANAGARAM ZAMINDHARY IN COLONIAL ANDHRA, 1802-1949 written by Dr. Syam Sundar Raju B and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of Colonial Andhra Zamindars played a crucial and prominent role. As some of them were 'feudal despots' we may criticize the nature and character of their role in the colonial era. Yet we cannot neither minimize nor ignore the part played by them during 'those' centuries of foreign rule. The significant fact that must be noted in this connection is that there was a radical transformation in the nature, attitude and thinking of the zamindars from the second half of the Nineteenth century. Coming under the influence of British education, british administration and modern thought many of them began to cultivate a sense of responsibility to the society and the people. They began to involve themselves in public activities and to encourage public organizations.
Book Synopsis Patterns of Labour Migrations in Colonial Andhra by : Kali Chittibabu
Download or read book Patterns of Labour Migrations in Colonial Andhra written by Kali Chittibabu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of migration is a prime example of a subject that requires the skills and approaches of scholars from several disciplines, such as anthropology, demography, economics, sociology, law, political science, and history. This book explores the importance of historical investigation into migration, which can be traced back to the pre-modern period. It continues to be an important socio-economic phenomenon in most parts of the world, though, more than the internal movement of people, the international angle has captured the global imagination of the scholars interested in migration studies. In India, both migration within the country and to outside the country is distinctly traceable back to the 19th century. In contrast to today’s high figures of internal migration, the India of this period witnessed the mass migration of labourers to overseas territories in the wake of migration of surplus capital, an inevitable result of the Industrial Revolution in the West. Relevant to discussions of internal migration in Andhra is the question of whether the people of this area were normally inclined towards mobility or were averse to it during the period under scrutiny. This book discusses the causes of the comparative immobility of the people of Andhra in relation to the wider high migration trends at the time, including their traditional attachment to their native locale.
